An OHTTP rejection usually comes from one of four places: the relay rejected the outer HTTP request, the gateway could not decapsulate it, the decrypted request violated an OHTTP rule, or the target service failed after the gateway forwarded the request. Start by checking whether the response is protected in an Encapsulated Response. An ordinary, unprotected error generally indicates failure before successful decapsulation; an encapsulated error means the gateway removed the OHTTP layer and is reporting a request or target-side result.

Oblivious HTTP (OHTTP) is a chain of cooperating components, not a single gateway appliance. The client encrypts an HTTP message for the gateway, sends it through an Oblivious Relay Resource, and the gateway decrypts and forwards it to a target. The relay handles transport-level delivery without seeing the plaintext request; the gateway sees the request content but is not given the client’s transport identity through the relay path. That separation makes configuration at every hop important.

How an OHTTP request reaches the target

Understanding the processing stages makes the error boundary much easier to identify. A normal exchange has these relationships:

Component What it receives What it can usually diagnose
Client The target request, the gateway identity, the gateway’s HPKE key configuration, and the relay identity Discovery failures, stale keys, malformed encapsulation, clock problems, and inability to decapsulate the response
Oblivious Relay Resource The outer HTTP request and the relay destination; it does not need the plaintext target request Outer HTTP syntax, missing or obviously invalid content, transport failures, and relay policy errors
Oblivious Gateway Resource The encapsulated request, the client’s selected key identifier and algorithms, and the target-routing information HPKE decryption, OHTTP message validity, request constraints, Date acceptance, and forwarding to the target
Target The decrypted HTTP request forwarded by the gateway Application authentication, authorization, request validity, service availability, and target response status

The client must have a gateway identity, a current HPKE public-key configuration for that gateway (including key identifier and supported algorithms), and the intended relay identity. If any of those values point to a different service or an old configuration, the exchange can fail before the client receives a response it can decrypt.

First determine whether the response is encapsulated

Do not begin by treating every 4xx or 5xx as a gateway application error. First inspect the response boundary and the client’s decapsulation result.

Observed response Most likely processing boundary Next check
Ordinary, unprotected 4xx The relay rejected the outer request, or the gateway could not remove the OHTTP encapsulation Outer request envelope, relay routing, gateway identity, key identifier, algorithms, and key freshness
Unprotected error with no usable OHTTP response Processing stopped before a successful decapsulation or the client’s configuration prevented response decryption Capture the exact status and body, then verify the client’s gateway and key configuration
Encapsulated 400 The gateway or target produced a response after decapsulation Inspect the decrypted request format and target-side behavior
Encapsulated 504 The gateway removed protection but did not receive a target response Investigate gateway-to-target reachability, target health, and timeout settings

RFC 9458 requires errors detected after decapsulation, including target errors, to be returned in an Encapsulated Response. Errors from the relay and gateway before successful decapsulation are sent without OHTTP protection. This is a strong diagnostic clue, not an infallible status-to-cause map: implementations can expose different bodies and policies, and a client may fail to process a response that was technically generated correctly.

Step-by-step troubleshooting

1. Capture the complete response at the client

Record the HTTP status, response headers, response body, whether the body is an Encapsulated Response, and the client’s decapsulation error. Preserve the request’s gateway URI, relay URI, key identifier, algorithm identifiers, and Date value. Do not rely on a browser’s generic “network error” message; use the OHTTP client’s protocol logging or a controlled test client that can show the outer exchange.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Save the timestamp in UTC and the client’s clock source.
  • Record whether the request crossed a redirect while retrieving key configuration.
  • Note whether the failure is reproducible with the same key identifier or only intermittent.
  • Correlate the client event with relay, gateway, and target logs using a privacy-preserving request or transaction identifier. Do not add the client’s network address to gateway logs merely to make correlation easier; that would undermine OHTTP’s separation goal.

An unprotected response narrows the search to the relay or to gateway processing before successful decapsulation, but it does not identify one exact cause. Continue with the envelope and key checks below.

2. Verify the gateway key configuration

The most common configuration failure is that the client encrypted for the wrong gateway or used a stale HPKE configuration. Confirm all of the following against the gateway that the relay actually contacts:

  • The gateway identity and endpoint are the intended service.
  • The HPKE key identifier is currently published and has not been retired or replaced.
  • The client selected an HPKE algorithm combination supported by that key configuration.
  • The key material was fetched from the correct service, over the expected route, and was not cached beyond the operator’s freshness policy.
  • The relay is forwarding to that same gateway rather than to a similarly named or legacy endpoint.

RFC 9458 defines an optional ohttp-key problem type for signaling incorrect or outdated key configuration. A gateway can also use a 422 response when a key identifier is unknown or refers to a replaced key. Neither behavior is guaranteed: the gateway may omit the problem type, and the relay may not forward it. Therefore, a generic unprotected 4xx does not clear the key configuration from suspicion.

Refresh the key configuration using the client’s normal discovery and cache-invalidation mechanism, then retry with the newly selected key identifier. If a gateway rotates keys, keep the old key available for the overlap period specified by the deployment rather than deleting it immediately; otherwise requests prepared just before rotation can fail while in flight. The exact overlap duration is an implementation policy, not a value set by RFC 9458.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Check the request’s Date value and clock window

OHTTP gateways can reject a Date value outside their active acceptance window. RFC 9458 defines a date problem type for an unacceptable value and says the gateway should account for clock differences and network round trips. A client with a fast or slow clock, a suspended device, or a long relay path can therefore receive a 4xx even when encryption and routing are correct.

  1. Compare the client’s UTC clock with a trusted time source.
  2. Check whether the device resumed from sleep or virtualization with a stale clock.
  3. Inspect the gateway’s configured acceptance window and any skew allowance.
  4. Compare the Date sent in the failed request with the Date value supplied in the gateway’s diagnostic response, if one is provided.
  5. Synchronize the clock, fetch a fresh key configuration if required by the client, and retry.

RFC 9458’s example allows a client to retry using the Date value supplied by the gateway. Treat that as a recovery mechanism, not as a reason to disable freshness checks. A broad acceptance window reduces protection against replay and can mask clock defects; configure tolerance deliberately and monitor clock drift instead.

4. Validate OHTTP message format and request constraints

After key and time checks, validate the actual OHTTP request. An invalid message must receive a 4xx response. One explicit prohibition is Expect: 100-continue: OHTTP clients must not send that expectation, and a gateway must generate an error if it receives it. Remove the header in the OHTTP client or in the component constructing the encapsulated request.

Check the following properties:

  • The encapsulated message is complete and has not been truncated by a proxy, body-size limit, or streaming adapter.
  • Content-length and framing are consistent with the bytes actually sent.
  • The request uses the key identifier and algorithm parameters encoded for the selected gateway configuration.
  • Required OHTTP fields are present, correctly encoded, and in the format required by the implementation.
  • No intermediary has rewritten the protected body or inserted unsupported transfer behavior.
  • The outer request contains content where the relay requires it; RFC 9458 notes that a relay may reject a request with no content as obviously invalid.

Do not “fix” a protocol error by exposing the plaintext request to the relay. The relay is intentionally not a trusted plaintext processor. Correct the client’s encapsulation and outer HTTP handling instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Verify discovery and routing

A client and relay must agree on which gateway is intended, and the key configuration must come from the service that owns that gateway. RFC 9540 describes two discovery mechanisms: an ohttp parameter in SVCB or HTTPS records, and the /.well-known/ohttp-gateway resource on the target host. The discovered information leads the client to a gateway location and to the key configuration it should use.

Walk the discovery chain separately from the request exchange:

  1. Resolve the target’s SVCB or HTTPS records and confirm that the advertised ohttp parameter is the one intended for this deployment.
  2. Request /.well-known/ohttp-gateway on the target host when that mechanism is used.
  3. Confirm that the returned gateway location and key-configuration location belong to the intended services.
  4. Check TLS, DNS, caching, and HTTP redirect behavior on each discovery request.
  5. Ensure the relay receives the gateway location selected by the protocol, not an unrelated origin or an untrusted redirect target.

A service may use a redirect while retrieving the well-known resource, subject to RFC 9540’s restrictions. In particular, if key-configuration retrieval is redirected, the client must not communicate the redirected gateway URI to the relay as the gateway location. Keep the discovery URI, the key-configuration URI, and the relay’s gateway destination distinct in logs and configuration; conflating them is a common routing error.

6. Separate gateway processing from target failure

Once the gateway successfully removes protection, the target becomes the next failure boundary. A target can return an ordinary application 4xx or 5xx, and the gateway can encapsulate that response for the client. If the target produces no response before the gateway’s timeout, the gateway can generate an appropriate error such as an encapsulated 504.

  • An encapsulated target 4xx means the request reached the target path far enough for a target-side response. Investigate authentication, authorization, routing, or application validation at the target.
  • An encapsulated 504 means the gateway did not receive a target response. Check DNS resolution from the gateway, firewall rules, connection establishment, target health, and timeout values.
  • An unprotected error means you should return to the relay, gateway decapsulation, key, format, or discovery checks rather than beginning with target application logs.

Do not classify every encapsulated 400 as a gateway bug. It can represent an invalid decrypted request or a target-generated 400. Gateway logs should record the processing stage and target outcome without recording the client’s transport identity.

How to interpret common response patterns

Pattern What it can indicate Practical response
Unprotected 4xx Outer request rejection by the relay, failed gateway decapsulation, wrong key configuration, invalid envelope, or another pre-decapsulation policy decision Inspect the envelope, key identifier, algorithms, gateway route, and relay logs; do not assume the target saw the request
ohttp-key problem type The gateway is signaling that the key configuration is incorrect or outdated Refresh the configuration and verify key rotation, but remember that the signal is optional and may not reach the client
date problem type The Date value is outside the gateway’s accepted window Synchronize clocks, inspect skew and round-trip allowance, then retry with a valid Date
Encapsulated 400 The gateway or target rejected the decrypted request Inspect decrypted-request validation and target logs, preserving the OHTTP privacy boundary
Encapsulated 504 The gateway did not receive a target response within its behavior or timeout policy Investigate gateway-to-target connectivity and timeout behavior
422 associated with a key identifier The gateway may consider the key unknown or replaced Fetch current key configuration and ensure the client is not reusing a retired identifier

These are permitted or illustrative behaviors from RFC 9458, not a universal status dictionary. Always pair the status with the encapsulation state and stage-specific logs.

Build useful diagnostics without breaking OHTTP privacy

Because the relay and gateway have deliberately different visibility, no single log stream can explain every rejection. Operate a stage-based diagnostic record:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Client: discovery result, key identifier, selected algorithms, Date value, outer status, encapsulation state, and decapsulation result.
  • Relay: receipt time, outer HTTP validation result, selected gateway destination, transport outcome, and any relay-generated status.
  • Gateway: key lookup result, decapsulation result, request-validation result, Date decision, target connection outcome, and whether the returned response was encapsulated.
  • Target: arrival time, application status, and response or timeout outcome.

Use short-lived correlation identifiers that do not encode a client address or plaintext request content. Retain enough timing data to distinguish a key or format rejection from a target timeout, but avoid logging decrypted headers and bodies by default. If a temporary diagnostic capture is necessary, restrict access, minimize retention, and disable it after the incident.

Deployment choices that affect troubleshooting

There is no single OHTTP gateway product or deployment model implied by the protocol. When evaluating an implementation, compare operational characteristics rather than assuming that a particular HTTP status has the same meaning everywhere.

Decision area Questions to answer
Relay and gateway ownership Are they operated by separate organizations, separate teams, or one operator with isolated roles? What evidence can each side share during an incident?
Discovery Does the client use SVCB/HTTPS records, the well-known resource, or both? How are redirects and caches controlled?
Key rotation How are key identifiers published, overlapped, retired, and refreshed? What happens to requests prepared during rotation?
Diagnostics Which stage records an error, and can logs be correlated without revealing the client’s transport identity?
Date policy What active window and clock-skew allowance are configured? How are clock failures detected?
Target behavior What timeout is used, how are target 4xx responses preserved, and how is a no-response condition represented to the client?

Document these answers before an outage. A runbook that says only “check the gateway” is incomplete because the relay, discovery service, key publisher, gateway, and target each own different failure modes.

Recovery checklists for operators

When every request suddenly becomes an unprotected 4xx

  1. Check whether the gateway key was rotated or replaced.
  2. Compare the client’s cached key identifier with the currently published configuration.
  3. Verify that discovery did not begin returning a different gateway or key service.
  4. Inspect relay routing and outer-request validation.
  5. Test a freshly discovered configuration from a controlled client.

When failures are intermittent

  1. Compare successful and failed requests by key identifier, gateway destination, relay path, and Date value.
  2. Look for multiple gateway instances with inconsistent key sets or clock settings.
  3. Check whether only one target region or network path produces encapsulated 504 responses.
  4. Review cache lifetimes and staggered key publication across clients.

When the response is encapsulated but the application still fails

  1. Determine whether the status came from the target or was generated by the gateway.
  2. For a 400, validate the decrypted request and target application requirements.
  3. For a 504, measure gateway-to-target connection and response time rather than relay-to-client time.
  4. Keep the client’s original transport identity out of target and gateway diagnostics.

What not to change during an incident

  • Do not widen the Date acceptance window indefinitely to hide clock drift.
  • Do not send the plaintext request through the relay for easier debugging.
  • Do not treat an optional ohttp-key or date problem type as mandatory evidence.
  • Do not hand a redirected gateway URI to the relay when RFC 9540 forbids that use.
  • Do not infer target failure from an unprotected response; target processing may never have started.

The reliable method is to identify the response boundary, verify the selected key and Date, validate the OHTTP envelope, re-check discovery and routing, and only then investigate target behavior. This ordering follows the protocol’s processing stages and prevents a target-side investigation from obscuring a client or gateway configuration error.
