Amazon blocked Meta’s Muse from shopping on Amazon.com in September 2026 after asking Meta to keep the agent out of its store. Amazon said Muse’s access was undisclosed and unauthorized, that the agent did not identify itself while browsing, and that it could reach customer account information. Meta said Muse cannot see users’ passwords or payment methods. The public reporting reviewed does not independently resolve the companies’ competing claims, and it does not establish whether the block remains in effect today.

Why was Muse blocked on Amazon?

Amazon’s stated objection was not simply that a customer asked an AI agent to shop. It said it had not agreed to Muse’s access, Meta had not told Amazon the agent would use the store, and Muse did not identify itself while browsing. Amazon also said Muse could reach account pages and order history when prompted. These are Amazon’s assertions as reported by GeekWire on September 20, 2026, not independent findings of a security incident.

Amazon framed the issue as one of retailer permission, transparency, transaction handling, customer security and control over the shopping experience. An Amazon spokesperson told GeekWire that third-party applications making purchases for customers should “operate openly and respect service provider decisions about whether or not to participate.” Axios’s September 21 coverage also described the dispute as a conflict over access to AI shopping agents.

GeekWire reported that Amazon had tried to get Meta to exclude Amazon from Muse’s experience before blocking the agent’s shopping access. The reported block occurred on the evening of September 20; users encountered a message saying continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violated Amazon’s Conditions of Use. The coverage establishes the block as reported then, not its status at a later date.

What did Meta say about Muse’s security?

Meta said Muse cannot see passwords or payment methods because credentials entered by users are held in secure storage. GeekWire also reported Meta’s description of a secure virtual machine, a dedicated browser and user confirmation before sensitive actions such as sending email or making a purchase. These are Meta’s descriptions of its safeguards; the reviewed coverage did not include an independent technical audit confirming how they work in practice.

That distinction matters: Amazon’s concerns are company claims, and Meta’s safeguards are company claims. Neither side’s public account, on its own, settles whether Muse’s implementation was secure or whether Amazon’s characterization was complete.

How Muse was described at launch

Meta launched Muse on September 8, 2026. The Associated Press reported at launch that it was available in the United States to people aged 18 and older through its app and WhatsApp. The agent was presented as a tool for everyday tasks and longer plans, including schedules, shopping, email and travel; it could open a browser, fill forms and negotiate on a user’s behalf.

GeekWire reported that Muse could use public APIs when available and otherwise interact through a browser. It also described a separate system called Sentinel that must approve actions Muse sends to the internet. These details describe the agent as reported around launch and may change; they are not an independent assessment of the system’s current capabilities.

What the dispute means if you use an AI shopping agent

Your instruction is not the retailer’s permission

You can authorize an agent to act for you, but that does not necessarily give it permission from a retailer to access the retailer’s site. Amazon’s position is that outside purchase agents should identify themselves and respect a service provider’s decision about participation. A shopping agent may therefore work with one merchant and be blocked by another.

Account access can go beyond product browsing

Amazon said Muse could reach account pages and order history when prompted. That is Amazon’s account of what the agent could access, not proof that anyone’s account was compromised. Still, it highlights why it is worth checking what an agent can see and do before connecting it to a shopping account.

Delegation shifts steps into software

A browser-using agent can carry out a sequence of actions rather than just recommend an item. Before delegating a purchase or another sensitive task, check which services it accesses, when it asks for confirmation, how you can inspect what it did, and what options you have to correct an error or seek a refund.

Company security claims are not independent verification

Amazon raised concerns about access and account surfaces; Meta described controls for credentials and sensitive actions. The public coverage cited here did not independently test Muse’s credential storage or Sentinel’s approval behavior, so it cannot establish how those protections perform under real-world conditions.

How to evaluate an AI agent before letting it shop

There is no official certification framework in the cited coverage. These are practical questions to use when comparing an agent, shopping directly, or using a retailer’s own assistant:

  • Merchant support: Which stores and services explicitly support the agent, and can a merchant withdraw access?
  • Identification: Does the agent identify itself to the services it visits?
  • Permissions: What access does it require to accounts, payment details, email or browsing activity?
  • Confirmation: Does it ask before checkout, sending messages or taking other consequential actions?
  • Review and recourse: Can you inspect its actions, correct mistakes and get help with a transaction?

GeekWire mentioned Amazon’s Alexa-based shopping assistant and its “Buy for Me” feature as retailer-provided alternatives. Their availability and terms can change, so check Amazon’s current information before relying on either. The existence of Amazon–Meta commercial ties does not establish a reason for the block: GeekWire reported that Amazon products had been purchasable inside Facebook and Instagram since 2023, and that Meta had a multibillion-dollar deal to use Amazon Graviton chips for agentic workloads.

Amazon’s broader position on shopping agents

Amazon made similar arguments in an October 31, 2025 letter to Perplexity about its Comet agent: purchase agents should identify themselves, respect retailers’ decisions and preserve customer security and shopping quality. The letter hosted by Amazon concerns Perplexity and Comet, not Meta or Muse. It shows Amazon’s stated position in a separate dispute; it is not evidence about Muse’s behavior.
