Amazon and Flipkart began reviewing third-party internet-connected CCTV camera listings in India after a Reuters analysis found that more than 700 of roughly 770 marketplace listings it examined were models not listed in the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) public database of approved brands or cameras. That finding raises a compliance and security concern; it does not prove that any camera in the sample was hacked, spying, or technically compromised.
What prompted the marketplace reviews?
Hindustan Times reported on 1 October 2026 that Amazon and Flipkart had started reviewing third-party internet-enabled camera listings following Reuters’ database comparison. Reuters reported that at least a dozen listings had been removed since Tuesday, including at least two EZVIZ models; Amazon showed those products as “currently unavailable” when Reuters reported. These are dated findings, not a current inventory audit.
The reports describe marketplace reviews of third-party products, not cameras made by Amazon or Flipkart. Hindustan Times said Amazon declined to comment and Flipkart did not respond to Reuters’ questions. Hindustan Times’ report and Channel NewsAsia’s republication of Reuters’ report describe the marketplace action and the limits of that snapshot.
What India requires for CCTV cameras
India has mandatory Essential Requirements for CCTV cameras sold in its market. A government statement published by the Press Information Bureau on 25 March 2026 says these requirements add three security-related obligations: documentation of the origin of critical hardware components such as the system-on-chip, testing for vulnerabilities that could permit unauthorized remote access, and testing at accredited laboratories. The government said 507 CCTV models had been certified against the requirements at that time; that is a dated count, not a current total.

A BIS-hosted order dated 9 April 2024 added CCTV cameras to the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021. It says the provisions apply after six months from publication and that reports from BIS-recognized laboratories are a prerequisite for a license to use the Standard Mark. BIS’s Scheme II page lists CCTV cameras and CCTV recorders and references the CCTV Essential Requirements. Does a missing BIS listing mean a camera is spying?
No. Not finding a model in the public database is an approval-status finding from the Reuters sample, not forensic evidence that the device has been hacked, is spying, or has sent footage elsewhere. The requirements address security risks by requiring component-origin documentation and testing for vulnerabilities; a database mismatch alone does not establish that a specific camera has a vulnerability or has been misused.

Reuters described concerns that sensitive footage could be transferred abroad. Gulshan Rai, identified in the reports as India’s cybersecurity chief from 2015 to 2019, told Reuters: “A compromised camera can become both a surveillance risk and a cybersecurity entry point.” That is a warning about the potential consequences of compromise, not a finding that the sampled cameras were compromised.
How to check a CCTV camera before buying
- Find the exact make and model number on the product listing and packaging. Do not rely on the brand name alone.
- Search the current BIS registration information for that exact model and confirm that the record identifies the same product. The BIS Scheme II list is the relevant starting point for CCTV cameras and recorders.
- Compare the model identity on the listing, package, and BIS record. If the names or model numbers do not match, do not assume that approval for another model or a similar product applies.
- Recheck before purchase or recommendation. Marketplace listings and availability can change, and the reports do not verify which individual models are currently available or approved.
This check is model-specific; it cannot support a blanket verdict about every product from a particular brand. The Reuters report is not a product test or a current model-by-model certification audit.
