AI stocks can lose momentum even while AI businesses keep growing. Share prices reflect expectations about future profits as well as current results, so a rally can stall when valuations already assume rapid growth, companies fail to meet those expectations, or investors question how soon heavy AI spending will produce revenue, productivity and lasting profits.

There is no single “AI stock” trade: chipmakers, infrastructure providers, cloud platforms and software companies have different economics. The evidence available through July 2026 helps explain possible pressure points, but it does not establish how AI stocks have performed or are valued on October 7, 2026.

Why can an AI stock rally lose momentum?

Expectations can outrun business results

A company can report rising sales and still disappoint investors if its results or outlook fall short of what the share price already implies. The reverse is also possible: a stock may rise on improving expectations before those gains show up in reported earnings. That is why business performance and stock performance are related but not interchangeable.

The Federal Reserve’s July 2026 Monetary Policy Report said S&P 500 prices relative to analysts’ projected earnings remained in the upper range of their historical distribution. It also noted strong analyst earnings expectations, low corporate bond spreads and elevated trade and geopolitical uncertainty. Optimistic earnings forecasts can support high prices, but they do not remove valuation or economic risks.

AI spending is real; the return is not automatic

Investment in AI infrastructure has become large. The Federal Reserve reported that business fixed investment rose at an 11% annual rate in the first quarter of 2026, with much of the strength appearing tied to infrastructure for AI services; business fixed investment rose 5.5% in 2025. The Fed also calculated that Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft and Oracle spent $131 billion on capital expenditures in the fourth quarter of 2025 and $412 billion over 2025—about 1.31% of U.S. GDP. Those capex estimates, based on S&P Capital IQ Pro and Bureau of Economic Analysis data, exclude leases.

Large outlays can build capacity for future services, but spending by itself does not show that customers will pay enough, soon enough, to cover the cost of equipment, power, depreciation and financing. Investors therefore watch whether revenue and cash generation grow alongside capital intensity, and whether management’s plans change.

Investors may question when productivity gains arrive

AI adoption and economy-wide productivity gains are different measures. The Federal Reserve’s April 3, 2026 note reported U.S. business AI adoption at about 18% in the four-observation moving average through year-end 2025, with planned adoption at about 21%. The underlying Census Bureau survey changed its question wording in November 2025, so the older and newer observations are not perfectly comparable.

The July 2026 FOMC minutes record that participants saw considerable uncertainty about the timing and scale of future productivity gains. The minutes’ summary of the discussion quotes Chair Jerome Powell: “Several participants suggested that AI-related investments would likely increase the growth of productivity and of potential output in the coming years.” The minutes immediately qualify that view: timing and magnitude remained uncertain. Some participants also discussed the possibility that disappointment about AI could trigger a significant stock repricing and affect consumer spending. That was a risk discussed by policymakers, not a prediction that it will happen.

A crowded trade can unwind quickly

When many investors favor similar stocks, changing expectations or a shift in positioning can intensify a sell-off. MSCI’s analysis of the five weeks through July 28, 2026 described the pullback as concentrated in high-momentum AI infrastructure components and interpreted it as consistent with a crowded-trade unwind. MSCI also found that application-layer components behaved differently. This is MSCI’s interpretation of that period, not proof that every AI-linked stock moved alike or that positioning alone caused the pullback.

Scale can make this exposure important to broader indexes. The Federal Reserve reported that AMD, Broadcom and Nvidia’s market capitalizations rose 179%, 636% and 975%, respectively, from ChatGPT’s launch in late 2022 to year-end 2025. Collectively, their share of the S&P 500 was 11.2% at year-end 2025, down from a high of 12.4% in October 2025. These are historical market-cap changes and index weights, not forecasts of future returns.

What do recent company results show?

Company results illustrate why investors compare growth with the costs and capital required to achieve it. The figures below are company-reported and cover the quarter ended June 30, 2026 unless noted; they are examples, not a complete comparison of valuation or investment merit.

Company Reported growth and AI-related signals Costs, margins or spending
Microsoft Revenue was $90.0 billion, up 18% year over year. Azure revenue exceeded $100 billion for fiscal 2026, and paid Microsoft 365 Copilot seats exceeded 30 million. These measures are not stated in the cited earnings-release figures summarized here. Source: Microsoft, July 29, 2026.
Meta Revenue was $60.801 billion, up 28% year over year. Costs and expenses rose 55%; operating income fell 8%; operating margin was 31%, versus 43% a year earlier. Quarterly capex, including finance lease principal payments, was $31.08 billion. Meta projected 2026 capex of $130–145 billion in that release; this was guidance, not realized spending. Source: Meta, July 29, 2026.

Microsoft chairman and CEO Satya Nadella said the Azure and Copilot figures reflected “the confidence customers are placing in us to power their AI transformation.” That is management’s characterization of customer demand, not independent proof of future returns. Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg described AI as “accelerating our core business today” and opening enterprise opportunities; that, too, is management’s view. For either company, reported adoption or revenue growth needs to be read alongside expenses, cash flow, investment needs and expectations already embedded in the share price.

What should investors watch next?

Use a consistent period and the same kind of accounting measure when comparing companies. A chip supplier, a cloud provider and an application business may all be linked to AI, but their customers, costs, capital requirements and routes to profit differ.

  • Revenue quality: Look for disclosed revenue tied to AI products or services, customer renewals and evidence that customers are willing to pay. Adoption counts and plans are not the same as realized productivity gains.
  • Margins and incremental costs: Track operating margins and the costs of delivering more AI capacity, including depreciation, power, labor and infrastructure. Revenue growth can coexist with margin pressure.
  • Capex, leases and cash generation: Compare capital expenditures and lease commitments with operating cash flow and free cash flow. Rising investment is not evidence on its own that the investment will earn an adequate return.
  • Guidance versus expectations: Compare new forecasts with the company’s prior guidance and the expectations reflected in the stock price. Do not call a result a “beat” or “miss” without a sourced consensus estimate for the same measure and period.
  • Valuation and forecast risk: Use a dated measure of price relative to earnings or cash flow, and remember that projected earnings are uncertain. Vanguard’s 2026 outlook put the cyclically adjusted P/E ratio at about 37 on November 19, 2025, in the top 10% of observations since 1988. That historical market-wide reading is not an October 2026 figure or a valuation of any individual AI company.
  • Financing conditions: Follow debt issuance, borrowing costs, interest expense, liquidity and reliance on external funding alongside infrastructure spending. The July 2026 FOMC minutes noted increased borrowing to finance AI infrastructure; policymakers’ discussion identifies a risk to monitor, not evidence that every company is overextended.
  • Value-chain exposure and concentration: Identify whether a business sells chips, builds infrastructure, provides a platform or offers applications. Consider customer concentration and how dependent its results are on a small number of buyers or suppliers.
  • Macro and policy risks: Interest rates, trade and geopolitical uncertainty, and regulation can change expected costs or the value investors place on future earnings, even when a company’s long-term AI prospects have not changed.

Is the AI rally over?

The evidence cited here cannot establish that. The latest market episode described by MSCI covers five weeks through July 28, 2026; the company earnings and FOMC minutes are from July, the adoption data run through late 2025, and Vanguard’s CAPE observation is from November 2025. None establishes current October 2026 stock returns, consensus estimates or valuations. A slowdown in one part of the AI trade also does not by itself show that demand for AI has ended: the relevant question is whether each company’s growth, profitability and spending justify what investors expect from it.
