AI is changing rack energy storage from something readers may associate mainly with backup into an active part of power management. In some current AI rack designs, local capacitors supply brief bursts of energy when synchronized GPU workloads raise demand, then recharge when demand eases. They work alongside software controls and facility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS), but they are not interchangeable with rack battery backup units (BBUs), UPS batteries, or site backup systems.

Why AI workloads create a new power-management problem

AI data centers concentrate large numbers of accelerators in tightly coordinated workloads. When GPUs ramp together, the resulting power demand can change quickly rather than rising smoothly. NVIDIA describes these fast, synchronized swings as a challenge for the wider power chain, including utility interconnections, generators, switchgear, transformers, power conversion, and campus controls.

That makes the relevant question more than “How long can storage keep the servers running during an outage?” Some storage can instead help shape the power profile during ordinary operation. NVIDIA’s view is that energy storage should be an active component of the power architecture, not only a backup system. That is an architecture position from NVIDIA, not a claim that every AI rack uses storage this way.

How storage and controls work at different layers

Power management is a coordinated system. GPU power management, workload controls, rack-level buffering, and facility systems address different parts of the problem and operate at different timescales.

Layer Role Typical location and timescale What it is not
GPU and workload controls Shape demand with power smoothing, limits, and coordinated work. Compute and rack-control layers; responds through control actions. Not an energy store; controls complement storage rather than making it unnecessary.
Rack-local capacitors or supercapacitors Supply energy during a brief demand spike and absorb energy when demand falls, buffering quick load changes. Close to the racks; NVIDIA describes the role on a milliseconds-to-seconds timescale. Not necessarily a battery, and not inherently a minutes-long backup source.
Rack battery backup unit (BBU) Provides localized backup power to critical server equipment. At rack level; the cited onsemi document describes 5–15 minutes for its particular AI data-center configuration. Not the same mechanism as a capacitor-based transient buffer.
Facility BESS Buffers larger site-level changes, supports ride-through during generator transfer, and provides operating flexibility. Facility or utility-interconnection level; NVIDIA describes it as handling residual transients and larger, slower changes. Not a rack capacitor or a replacement for every UPS, backup, or generation function.

NVIDIA describes capacitors supplying extra power during a sudden rise in demand and charging when demand drops. Placing that buffering near the load addresses a fast transient before it becomes solely a facility-level problem. Software and rack controls also shape demand; storage does not, by itself, eliminate power swings.

What the current platform figures do—and do not—show

NVIDIA’s 2026 Vera Rubin materials give examples of how a vendor is applying rack-level buffering. They are platform-specific figures, not industry-wide measurements:

  • NVIDIA says the Vera Rubin NVL72 platform has approximately six times more local energy buffering than Blackwell Ultra. This is a comparison between those NVIDIA platforms, not a general improvement across AI racks.
  • NVIDIA’s Vera Rubin POD article states 400 joules per GPU for rack-level energy storage.
  • NVIDIA claims Vera Rubin Intelligent Power Smoothing can reduce peak current demands by up to 25%. “Up to” and the platform attribution matter; this is a vendor claim, not an independent industry-wide result.

These figures illustrate the design direction, but they do not establish a universal effect for rack-level storage. Actual results depend on the rack, workload, controls, electrical design, and facility configuration.

How to distinguish rack buffering from backup

Capacitors address brief transients

Capacitors or supercapacitors near the rack are intended to respond quickly: they can provide a short burst when load rises and recharge as demand falls. Their purpose is to smooth fast changes, not necessarily to supply server power through a prolonged outage.

BBUs provide localized backup

A rack BBU is a distinct backup product category. In its May 2025 “AI Data Center” technical document, onsemi gives a runtime range of 5–15 minutes for the setup it describes. That range should not be treated as a universal BBU specification or as evidence that a BBU is the capacitor buffer described in NVIDIA’s rack architecture.

Facility BESS handles site-level needs

Facility BESS operates at a larger scale. NVIDIA describes it as a buffer or backup at the utility interconnection that can manage slower, larger changes, support ride-through during generator transfer, and handle residual transients. Its role depends on how the site coordinates storage with generation, power conversion, controls, and operating priorities.

These functions can coexist. Transient smoothing, ride-through, outage backup, demand response, and grid support are different objectives; a design should specify which one it needs instead of using “energy storage” as if it named a single device or function.

What changes in a facility power architecture

NVIDIA’s 800 VDC discussion describes a direction in which facility conversion and distribution move toward a native DC backbone, with facility storage potentially integrated into that backbone. It also places rack-near capacitors and supercapacitors on the milliseconds-to-seconds timescale, distinct from facility storage serving broader needs. This is NVIDIA’s technical direction, not evidence that 800 VDC is already the universal data-center architecture.

The facility layer is more than a battery cabinet. It involves storage cells, conversion equipment, controls, telemetry, safety, and coordination with UPS and backup systems. The Open Compute Project’s vendor-neutral Energy Storage subgroup identifies reference architectures and guidance areas that include centralized, distributed, AC-coupled, DC-coupled, and hybrid designs, along with integration, interoperability, monitoring, diagnostics, testing, and validation.

What to check when evaluating an energy-storage design

For a real rack or site, start with the job to be done and the electrical architecture, rather than choosing a device based only on the word “storage.” Useful comparison criteria include:

  • Purpose: Is the system intended for transient smoothing, backup, ride-through, demand response, or grid support?
  • Response and duration: How quickly must it respond, and for how long must it deliver energy?
  • Location and electrical coupling: Is it rack-level, UPS-integrated, or facility-scale, and is the design AC-coupled, DC-coupled, or hybrid?
  • Power and energy sizing: What peak power and stored energy are required for the actual load profile?
  • Controls and telemetry: How will the system coordinate with GPUs, rack controls, power conversion, generation, and facility monitoring?
  • Safety and lifecycle: What are the requirements for protection, maintenance, diagnostics, testing, and end-of-life management?
  • Compatibility: Does the system match the rack, UPS, site distribution, and operator requirements?

A consumer rack-mount UPS should not be assumed to substitute for a data-center BBU or capacitor buffer. Voltage, connectors, topology, runtime, rack format, and operational requirements need to be verified for the specific design.
