AI image edits can alter a face, object, or background detail even when you asked for a small change. To reduce drift, make one edit at a time, name what must stay unchanged, and use a mask or local inpainting tool when available. These controls guide the result; they do not guarantee that every unedited detail will remain identical.
Why AI image edits change details you did not ask to change
An image-editing model uses the source image as guidance while generating or reconstructing content to follow your instruction. The instruction, reference images, mask, and any source-image strength control can steer that process, but they are not a promise of exact preservation. This is a qualified explanation based on documented controls and limitations, not a measured cause that applies to every product.
There is no statistic in the cited sources establishing how often AI edits change faces or other details. The amount of drift can depend on the tool and the edit, so check the output rather than assuming a particular prompt or setting will prevent it.
How to reduce unwanted changes
1. Request one change and name what must remain fixed
Keep the edit instruction narrow. For example: “Change only the jacket to dark blue. Keep the person’s identity, facial features, expression, hairstyle, pose, body shape, lighting, and background unchanged.” Adapt the preservation list to your image: for a product photo, it might include shape, geometry, labels, layout, and lighting.

OpenAI’s image-prompting guide recommends explicitly naming both the change and details to preserve. It says: “For edits, say “change only X” and list the details to preserve, such as identity, geometry, layout, lighting, or labels.”
2. Use the original image as the edit input
Start from the original rather than a version that has already drifted. If the tool accepts multiple references, label each one’s job—for example, “edit target,” “identity reference,” or “style reference”—and say how it should influence the result. A reference for style should not be mistaken for the person or object to reproduce.

3. Restrict the edit to the intended area
When available, use a local-editing, inpainting, or masking feature to focus the change. Stability AI describes inpainting as modifying or replacing masked regions while preserving the rest of the image, and lists fixing face artifacts among common uses in its inpainting guide.

4. Adjust image strength cautiously, if the tool offers it
Some image-to-image tools expose a strength control that affects how much the output follows the source image. Its meaning is product-specific. In the example documented for Stability AI’s endpoint, an image strength of 0.35 preserves roughly 35% of the initial image; this is an endpoint-specific example, not a universal setting or guarantee. See the Stability AI API reference for that endpoint’s behavior. Make small adjustments and compare results instead of copying the number to another tool.
5. Iterate with one correction at a time
If the result changes a face or another protected detail, do not pile several new requests into the next prompt. Correct the specific problem, restate the relevant preservation constraints, and inspect the face, geometry, labels, and neighboring areas again. Adobe documents text and drawing tools for guiding AI edits in Photoshop; markup is one way to indicate an intended area, not evidence that identity will be preserved better than with other tools.

When generative editing is not precise enough
If exact identity or pixel-level preservation is essential, use a workflow that leaves protected pixels untouched, or finish with conventional manual compositing or retouching. The cited product documentation does not establish a universal guarantee that generative editing will preserve a person’s identity or every surrounding pixel.
