Afterpay may reject a card because the card details or billing address do not match, the issuer has blocked the transaction, the card type is not supported in your market, or there are not enough available funds. A purchase can also be declined by Afterpay’s eligibility checks even when the card itself is valid. The right fix depends on whether you are placing an order, paying an installment, or using the Afterpay Card in a store.
First identify which payment is failing
Afterpay card problems can occur at different points, and the cause of a declined purchase is not necessarily the cause of a failed repayment.

- New online order: The card issuer may reject the authorization, the merchant’s checkout may have a problem, or Afterpay may decline the order under its own assessment.
- Scheduled or manual repayment: Check the card details, available funds, and any restriction placed by the issuer. In Canada, Afterpay’s consumer guidance also says a cancelled card can be replaced in the account so the payment can be made manually.
- In-store Afterpay Card: Wallet setup, terminal compatibility, and the terminal’s debit-or-credit selection can matter. The specific steps for this case below apply to US in-store use.
Check the card and billing details
Re-enter the card number, security code, and expiration date, and make sure the card is active and has not been cancelled. For an online purchase, compare the billing address entered at checkout with the address your card issuer has on file. A delivery address can be different; it is the billing details that need to match for verification.

Afterpay’s Australian guidance says it cannot override a bank’s block: if the bank has blocked the card, the order will not go through.

Check whether your card is supported in your country
Card acceptance varies by market. Afterpay’s New Zealand merchant guidance gives prepaid and virtual cards as examples that are often declined, and says foreign-issued cards are not accepted in that context. It recommends a supported Visa or Mastercard debit or credit card. These are New Zealand-specific merchant guidelines, not a universal rule for every country or Afterpay product; check the local guidance for your market if you are unsure.
That same New Zealand guidance notes that a card may fail authorization if it does not have enough available funds. Its suggestion about keeping funds equal to 25% of the purchase is merchant-facing advice for that context, not a requirement established here for every market or transaction.

A valid card does not guarantee an order approval
Afterpay makes a separate decision about whether to accept an order. Its guidance lists eligibility, account restrictions, spending behavior, risk checks, internal policies, and the account’s available-to-spend amount among possible reasons for a decline. So a card can be active, supported, and correctly entered while Afterpay still declines the purchase.
Check the available-to-spend information in the Afterpay app and look for any account notice. Changing cards or retrying does not guarantee approval; the decision is not always a card-verification problem.

- To report your Lost or Stolen Physical Visa Card, call Customer Service 24/7 at 1 (888) 524-1283 to cancel your Gift Card as soon as you can. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
- Use your Visa Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted, including online.
Rule out a checkout or merchant problem
A failed checkout can also be caused by a temporary service issue, a merchant integration problem, or a missing checkout field. If the page appears to have errored, refresh it or try again after a short interval. If the same issue persists only at one merchant, the merchant may need to investigate its checkout rather than treating it as a problem with your card.
For an in-store Afterpay Card in the US
These checks apply to the US Afterpay Card used in a store, not to ordinary online checkout or every country’s Afterpay service.

- Confirm the Afterpay Card is provisioned in a compatible digital wallet, such as Apple Pay or Google Pay.
- At the terminal, make sure the Afterpay Card is the selected payment method rather than another default card.
- Check available-to-spend and whether the purchase is within any single-purchase limit shown for your account.
- Confirm the terminal supports the payment method. If it asks you to choose debit or credit, select DEBIT.
When to contact support
If the issuer confirms it has not blocked the payment and your details are correct, contact Afterpay through the support route shown in your app or your country’s help center. For a merchant-specific checkout error, contact the merchant as well. Support options and contact details vary by country; do not assume a phone number or service hours listed for the US apply elsewhere.
