Do not give every Next.js image an early-loading hint. Reserve it for an image that needs to load early—usually the page’s above-the-fold Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) image—and use the API that matches your Next.js version. Next.js documentation recommends selective loading, but it does not establish that prioritizing every image will always slow every site.

Why prioritizing every image can backfire

Image priority is a request-ordering hint, not an image optimization. If many images are marked for early loading, they can all compete for network and browser resources, including resources needed to render the most important content. That can undermine the purpose of prioritizing the image that matters first.

This is a practical risk, not a quantified universal result: the cited Next.js documentation does not provide a benchmark showing that applying priority to every image always makes a site slower. Measure your own route and viewport before claiming a regression or improvement.

Choose the loading behavior for the image’s role

Next.js images are lazy-loaded by default. Lazy loading defers a request until the image is within a calculated distance of the viewport; eager loading requests it immediately, regardless of position. Below-the-fold images that are not needed immediately generally do not need an early-loading hint.

  • INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
  • WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
  • Likely LCP or above-the-fold hero image: Consider an early-loading strategy for the image that needs to appear promptly. The historical Next.js 14 guide recommends adding priority to the image expected to be the page’s LCP element. The LCP element is typically the largest image or text block visible in the viewport.
  • Below-the-fold or noncritical image: Leave it on the default lazy behavior unless there is a specific reason to load it sooner.
  • Uncertain image role: Check the actual route and viewport. The image that is largest or visible on one screen size may not be the LCP image in another layout.

Use the API for your Next.js version

The prop name and current recommendation depend on the installed version. In Next.js 16, priority is deprecated in favor of preload. Current App Router documentation says preload defaults to false, and advises against combining it with loading or fetchPriority. It says that in most cases, loading="eager" or fetchPriority="high" is preferable to preloading.

Situation Documented guidance
Next.js 16 priority is deprecated in favor of preload.
Current App Router guidance preload inserts a link in the document head when set to true. Next.js identifies the LCP image or an above-the-fold hero image as likely use cases, but advises against combining preload with loading or fetchPriority.
Next.js 14 historical guidance The versioned image optimization guide recommends priority for the image expected to be the page’s LCP element. Do not treat that older prop recommendation as the current API in Next.js 16.

Check the documentation for the version and router you use before changing props. In particular, do not assume the historical priority recommendation means that every image should be marked priority.

Do not confuse request priority with image dimensions

A high-priority request can still transfer an unnecessarily large image. In the Pages Router documentation, a responsive image without sizes is assumed to be 100vw, which can lead to larger downloads than needed. Set sizes to reflect the image’s rendered width so the browser can choose an appropriate candidate from srcset. This addresses transfer size; it is separate from deciding which image should load early.

A practical way to review image loading

  1. Identify the likely LCP image on the route and viewport you care about. Do not assign early loading to every image based only on its presence in the component tree.
  2. Check your Next.js version and router, then follow the matching Image component reference. In Next.js 16, use the current guidance rather than treating the deprecated priority prop as the default choice.
  3. Keep noncritical images lazy unless a specific user-visible need justifies requesting them immediately.
  4. Review responsive sizing for images that adapt to the viewport. Ensure sizes reflects their rendered width instead of letting the browser assume 100vw when that is inaccurate.
  5. Measure before and after on the relevant route and viewport. Compare the observed result rather than assuming that more priority hints improve performance—or that they always make it worse.
