If Words With Friends rejects a word, use Word Strength to check whether the formed play is valid. The in-game Dictionary serves a different purpose: it looks up definitions, and a definition does not prove a word can be played. A word may be excluded by the game’s rules, missing from its word list, or invalid because the placement creates an illegal cross-word.

How to check whether your play is valid

  1. Check the formed play with Word Strength. Zynga describes Word Strength in Words With Friends 2 as the feature for checking whether a formed word is valid. It is the in-game validity check.
  2. Use Dictionary for meanings. If you want to understand an unfamiliar English word, look it up with the in-game Dictionary. Zynga describes this feature as English-only; it is not a substitute for Word Strength.
  3. Inspect every word the placement creates. A tile can extend an existing line or touch neighboring tiles to form short cross-words. Check those too: one invalid word can block the play even if the main word seems valid.
  4. Confirm the selected language. Zynga documents language-specific word lists and rules. A result from an outside checker, another language, or another word game may not match the list selected in your game.
  5. Contact Zynga if the rejection remains unexplained. Provide the exact word, selected language, app version, and board placement so support has the context needed to investigate. Zynga’s Words With Friends game page directs players to its Help Center.

Common reasons Words With Friends rejects a word

The word is in an excluded category

Zynga’s official English rules exclude proper nouns, abbreviations, prefixes or suffixes used alone, and words that require a hyphen or apostrophe. A word may be familiar or meaningful and still fall outside the game’s rules.

The word is not on the game’s list

Zynga’s rule book says Words With Friends has more than 173,000 acceptable English words. Zynga names the Oxford English Dictionary as a source for words and definitions, but also says it has added words of its own. That means a listing in another dictionary—or a rejection by another word-game checker—does not settle whether the game accepts it.

The game is using a different language list

Word lists and character rules vary by language. Check the language selected in the game rather than assuming an English result applies to another language, or that an external checker uses the same list.

A cross-word is invalid

In a tile-based play, the placement can create more than the intended main word. If any word formed with neighboring tiles is not valid, the game may block the play. Check each connected sequence of letters, including short words.

When the in-game check does not explain the rejection

The general rules cannot identify the cause of every individual rejection. The result can depend on the exact word, selected language, app version, and board layout; the official rule book does not document every app error. If Word Strength and a check of all cross-words do not clarify the problem, contact Zynga support with those details. Zynga’s legacy web page says that version is no longer available and directs players to mobile, so verify the play in the current mobile game rather than relying on an old web version.

Why outside dictionaries can disagree

Before relying on an outside reference, ask three questions: does it use the Words With Friends list, does it match the game’s selected language, and does it validate playability rather than only define a word? Word Strength is Zynga’s described in-game check for validity; a general dictionary answers a different question.
