If a wet-dry vacuum leaves water behind, first switch it off and unplug it. Check whether the recovery tank is full or the float shutoff has activated, then inspect the filter setup specified for your exact model and clear any blockage in the hose, inlet, wand, or nozzle. Loose connections, damaged hoses, and—on floor scrubbers—dirty or worn squeegee blades can also prevent proper water pickup.
Start with the type of machine
“Wet-dry vacuum” can mean different machines, and their recovery systems are not interchangeable. A canister or shop-style vacuum pulls water through a hose into a tank; a scrubber-style floor machine uses a recovery path and squeegee; a cordless wet floor cleaner may use a separate brush and recovery design.

Use the manual for the exact make and model, including its region-specific instructions. For example, the Victor WD30/WD60 manual says to remove its cloth filter for wet pickup, while BISSELL’s Model 2035 instructions call for both fabric and mesh filters to be installed for wet and dry cleaning. Those instructions are product-specific, not universal rules.

Work through these checks safely

Switch off, unplug, and check the tank
Unplug the machine before inspecting or clearing it. Empty a full recovery tank. A full tank can trigger a float shutoff that cuts airflow. The Victor WD30/WD60 manual says its float cuts off airflow at capacity and does not return until the vacuum is switched off and emptied. RIDGID’s wet/dry vac troubleshooting also lists a full tank among causes to check when suction is poor.

Make sure the float moves freely
With the machine off, inspect the float for dirt or an obstruction and check that it can move freely. If it is stuck in the shutoff position, airflow may be blocked. Do not force it; follow the model’s instructions for cleaning or servicing it. BISSELL’s Model 2035 no-suction guidance also identifies the float as a check.

Verify the filter is configured for wet pickup
Check the manual before removing or installing a filter. A clogged or wet filter may need cleaning and complete drying, but some machines require a filter during wet pickup while others specify a different setup. BISSELL says both filters should be installed on its Model 2035 for wet and dry cleaning and fully dry after washing. By contrast, the Victor WD30/WD60 manual says to remove the cloth filter for wet pickup. Kärcher says to let water in its cartridge filter dry if suction shuts off during wet cleaning. Follow your own model’s directions; do not run it in a configuration that conflicts with its manual.

Clear the water and air path
With the machine unplugged, check the tank inlet, hose, wand, nozzle, and any attachment for debris or a clog. Separate components where the manual permits and clear them carefully. Avoid pushing a sharp object through a hose, which could puncture it. BISSELL recommends checking separated components for blockages, and RIDGID advises checking the hose.

Check connections, lid, drain cap, and seals
Make sure the hose is fully connected, the powerhead or lid is seated, and the tank drain cap is tight. A poor seal can reduce suction. Inspect the hose and seals for damage; replace a torn hose or defective seal with a compatible part specified for the model. Kärcher’s US FAQs include seals and connections among the checks for reduced performance.

Inspect the squeegee on a scrubber-style machine
This check applies only if the machine uses a squeegee. Debris under the blade, a blocked recovery passage or squeegee neck, worn blade edges, or incorrect adjustment can leave water traces on the floor. Clean the recovery path and blade; use the machine manual for blade adjustment or replacement. The Pacific Floorcare S20 operator manual covers water recovery and squeegee maintenance.
What the symptoms can tell you
- Suction stopped or changed suddenly: Check for a full tank or an activated float before looking for a more complex fault.
- Little or no suction: Check filter condition and setup, obstructions, connections, and hose damage.
- The vacuum collects some water but leaves a film: Inspect the nozzle and attachment for blockage; on a scrubber, check the recovery passage and squeegee blade.
- It worked before the filter was washed: Let washable parts dry completely if the model requires that, and reinstall them as directed.
These clues help prioritize checks; they do not identify a failed part on their own.

When to stop troubleshooting
Contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider if suction remains poor after the basic checks, the motor or turbine appears faulty, or you find damage that you cannot safely address. RIDGID advises turning off and unplugging an older vacuum immediately if it has a burning or electrical smell. Do not keep operating a machine that shows signs of an electrical or other safety problem.

If inspection confirms a part is damaged or due for replacement, use a compatible part for the exact model. A replacement filter will not resolve a blockage or a lid that is not seated, so identify the cause before ordering parts.
