A website’s “update your browser” message can mean your browser is genuinely too old for a feature the site needs—or that the site has misidentified it. Check your installed version and update through the browser’s own settings first. If it is current, troubleshoot extensions and settings, then contact the site with the warning text and your browser details.
Why a website asks you to update
The message may reflect a real compatibility limit: a site can rely on newer browser features or choose to support only certain browsers and versions. That policy is specific to the site. One website’s warning does not prove that your browser is unsupported everywhere.
For example, Microsoft says its “This website works better in Microsoft Edge” notice can appear because a browser is outdated, lacks supported features, or because the site is optimized for Edge. That guidance applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft explains the Edge recommendation notice.

Why the warning can be wrong
Websites often use browser information sent by the browser to decide what to display. That information can be changed by an extension or customized setting, or interpreted incorrectly by the website. Mozilla notes that an incorrect Firefox user agent can trigger an outdated or incompatible warning even when Firefox is current. It also says add-ons can change Firefox’s user agent without the user knowing. Mozilla’s Firefox troubleshooting guidance explains this case.
This identification method is inherently unreliable. A user-agent string may contain overlapping or conflicting browser labels, so a site can mistake which browser it is dealing with. MDN’s guide to browser detection describes why user-agent-based detection can fail.

Microsoft’s developer guidance recommends detecting browser features rather than the browser itself whenever possible, and describes user-agent strings as outdated and historically troublesome for compatibility. That is advice for website developers—not proof that every update warning is mistaken. Microsoft Edge’s user-agent guidance.

How to troubleshoot the message
- Check the installed version. Open your browser’s About or Help menu and use its built-in update option. Google notes that some old browser versions may not be supported and provides instructions for updating supported browsers. Google’s supported-browser troubleshooting covers browser updates and related checks.
- Restart and reload. If an update was installed, restart the browser if prompted, then reload the site. Depending on the browser and platform, a pending update may not take effect until the browser restarts.
- Test extensions if the browser is current. Temporarily disable extensions that modify browser identity, or try the site with extensions disabled. Mozilla identifies add-ons as one possible reason Firefox may report an incorrect user agent.
- Check JavaScript and privacy settings. A site may not work as expected if JavaScript is disabled or strict privacy settings block functionality. Google includes JavaScript, extensions, and privacy settings among the checks for browser-related sign-in problems.
- Try another supported browser. If the site works there, the problem may be specific to the original browser or its interaction with that site. Changing the browser’s reported identity does not add missing features: what a browser reports and what it can actually do are different things.
- Ask an administrator before changing a managed device. On a work or school computer, security settings may be controlled by the organization. Google directs users to their administrator for company security settings.
- Contact the website if the warning persists. Include the site name, full warning text, browser name and version, operating system, and whether the same issue occurs in another browser. Those details can help support staff distinguish a site-specific warning from a browser-wide problem.
What your results can tell you
- The browser is outdated and the warning appears on multiple sites: update it through its built-in mechanism, then restart and retest.
- The browser is current and only one site shows the warning: the site may have a specific support policy or a detection problem.
- The warning disappears when extensions are disabled: an extension may have changed browser information or interfered with site behavior.
- The site works in another supported browser: that narrows the issue to the original browser or the site’s handling of it; it does not by itself prove which one is at fault.
