If you see “Open in Safari” on Android, it is almost certainly a message from the website or app—not an Android setting. Android cannot run Apple’s Safari browser. The prompt may result from a site’s browser or device detection, page copy, an app-install banner, or a redirect; the right fix depends on where it appears.
Why a website may say “Open in Safari” on Android
A website can display its own instructions or choose what to show based on the browser or device it thinks you are using. A mistaken detection, a redirect, or a prompt designed for Apple users can therefore appear on an Android device. User-agent detection is one possible explanation, but it does not identify the cause on every site. Robots.net’s explanation of the prompt describes this possibility.
Apple’s Universal Links are a separate, Apple-platform feature that can connect a website link with content in an associated app. Apple says an eligible link can open in the app, or in the user’s default browser if the app is not installed. That background may help explain Apple-related app and browser wording, but it does not prove that Universal Links caused a particular prompt on Android. How to troubleshoot the prompt
- Reload the page once. This can help if a temporary redirect or an embedded page caused the message.
- Open the link in a full browser. If you tapped it inside another app, use that app’s menu to open it in your Android browser, or copy the URL and paste it into Chrome or another installed browser. Menu labels vary by app.
- Try another Android browser. If the prompt appears in only one browser, note that when contacting the site or app’s support team.
- Look for the service’s own option. Check for an Android, mobile-site, or “continue on web” choice and use it if available.
- Try desktop-site view in Chrome if the page itself is the problem. Open More → Desktop site. For a general preference, Google documents Chrome → Settings → Site settings → Desktop site; a per-site setting may override the general preference. Refresh after changing the setting. This changes the presentation Chrome requests, not the browser’s identity. See Google’s Chrome guidance.
- Change the default browser only if links open in the wrong app. On Android, go to Settings → Apps → Default apps (or Choose default apps) → Browser app, then select an installed browser. Labels can vary by device maker and Android version. Google’s Android guidance
When the site itself needs attention
If the message persists in multiple browsers, the page may be using site-specific detection, instructions, or redirects that you cannot correct with an Android setting. Contact the service’s support team with the page URL, the browser you used, and what happened. Avoid installing an app or entering credentials just because an unfamiliar page requests it; if the request seems unexpected, go to the service’s known website or official app listing instead.
