A USB-C cable can charge a device without carrying video, and a cable that supports video can still charge too slowly for a particular laptop. The connector shape alone tells you neither capability. Check the power and video specifications of the device, port, cable, charger, adapter and display, then isolate the problem by testing a known-good compatible setup.
Why the same USB-C cable can charge slowly or show no picture
USB-C describes a connector, not a guaranteed set of features. Charging speed depends on the device, power adapter and cable working together at a suitable power level. Video output depends on the computer’s port, cable, any adapter or dock, the monitor’s input and the display mode you are trying to use.
That is why a cable may charge a phone but fail to connect a monitor, or connect a display while charging a laptop slowly. Troubleshoot power and video as separate capabilities rather than treating USB-C as one all-or-nothing standard.

- Check the device’s power requirement. Find the manufacturer’s charging specification for your exact laptop, tablet or phone. Do not assume one charger wattage suits every model. Apple notes that a Mac may show a “Slow Charger” indication when the charger supplies too little power for that Mac: Apple’s Mac charging guidance.
- Check both the charger and cable. Each must support the power level the device requires. Microsoft likewise makes faster USB-C charging conditional on the charger and cable supporting the PC or phone’s required power levels: Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guidance.
- Test a known-good combination directly. Connect a compatible charger and charging-capable cable directly to the device, temporarily bypassing a dock or hub. If charging improves, test the original charger and cable separately to identify which part is limiting power.
- Inspect the fit and condition. Reseat both ends and look for visible damage or a loose connection. Apple advises stopping use of a cable that charges only when moved or wiggled and having the cable and power supply evaluated: Apple’s advice for a USB-C cable that won’t charge.
How to troubleshoot a USB-C monitor that is blank or limited
- Verify video output on the computer’s exact port. Check the manufacturer’s specifications for that port for DisplayPort over USB-C/DisplayPort Alt Mode or the required Thunderbolt support. A USB-C-shaped socket alone does not establish video capability. ASUS recommends verifying video function on both the computer and monitor ports: ASUS USB-C video troubleshooting. DisplayPort explains the relevant USB-C display connection options in its USB-C FAQ.
- Confirm the monitor input and signal path. If the monitor does not accept USB-C video directly, the adapter or cable must match the monitor’s input, such as HDMI or DisplayPort, and support the display mode you want. A dock adds another component to check.
- Check the cable’s video capability. Charging support does not prove video support. For example, Apple says its USB-C Charge Cable is limited to USB 2.0 data at 480 Mbps and does not support video, while its Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) cable supports video: Apple’s USB-C and Thunderbolt cable specifications.
- Make a direct connection while testing. Secure both ends, connect the display directly to the computer and temporarily remove the dock. Apple recommends a direct connection when troubleshooting an external display that is dark or running at a lower resolution or refresh rate: Apple’s external display troubleshooting steps.
- If the picture appears at reduced settings, check mode limits. The cable, adapter or display path may not support the resolution and refresh rate selected. Apple notes that an unsupported video cable or adapter can leave an external display dark or force it to use a lower resolution or refresh rate. Check each component’s specifications before assuming the computer is defective.
What to check before replacing a cable or adapter

| Check | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Charging | The cable’s power capability and the charger’s output meet the device manufacturer’s stated requirement. |
| Video protocol | The cable explicitly supports the video connection your source port uses, such as DisplayPort Alt Mode or the required Thunderbolt capability. |
| Display mode | The cable and any adapter support the monitor’s required resolution and refresh rate. |
| Data | If peripherals will share the connection, check that the cable’s data rate meets those needs. |
| Connection and layout | Confirm the connector direction and input/output compatibility, length, source-port capability and monitor input. |
USB-IF compliance guidance describes 60W or 240W power-capability markings for USB-C-to-USB-C cable categories and data-rate markings for applicable cable types: USB-IF cable marking guidance. Those marks help identify stated power or data capabilities; they do not, by themselves, establish that a cable supports video.
USB Power Delivery Revision 3.1 enables up to 240W over a full-featured USB Type-C cable and connector, according to USB-IF. That is a standard capability, not a promise that every charger, cable or device delivers that power: USB-IF USB Power Delivery information. The device and charger must support the applicable level, and the cable must be suitable for it.

One example of why the specifications matter
Apple’s cited Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) cable supports DisplayPort HBR3 video, Thunderbolt 3 data transfer up to 40 Gbps, USB 3.1 Gen 2 data transfer up to 10 Gbps and charging up to 100W. Apple contrasts it with its USB-C Charge Cable, which supports USB 2.0 data transfer up to 480 Mbps and no video. These are specifications for those particular Apple cables—not universal limits for USB-C cables or a reason every setup needs a Thunderbolt cable.
When a USB-C-to-HDMI or DisplayPort adapter makes sense
An adapter or adapter cable can connect a USB-C video output to a monitor with a different input, provided the computer’s port supports video and the adapter supports the monitor’s required signal and display mode. DisplayPort describes USB-C docks and adapters that can carry display audio and video alongside USB data and charging power over one connection: DisplayPort’s USB-C FAQ. An adapter cannot add video output to a computer port that does not provide it.

A quick way to isolate the failing part
- Slow charging: compare the device’s stated power requirement with the charger and cable capabilities; then swap in a known-good compatible charger or cable, one at a time.
- No display: confirm the computer port supports video, then connect directly with a known-good video-capable cable and a compatible monitor input.
- Intermittent display or charging: reseat both ends and remove the dock or adapter for a direct test. If charging works only when the cable is moved, stop using it and arrange an evaluation.
- Low resolution or refresh rate: check the supported display mode for the cable and every adapter in the chain before changing hardware.
The exact charging power and display modes depend on the models and specifications of the device, port, charger, cable, adapter and monitor. Without those model details, there is no single cable rating or replacement that is guaranteed to solve both symptoms.
