If a PS5 game looks blurry or washed out, first check whether the problem affects the PS5 home screen and multiple games or only one title. Then verify the console’s reported video signal, compare HDR modes, and isolate the HDMI connection. There is no single setting that fixes every display: the right adjustment depends on the game, TV or monitor, and signal path.
First, find out whether it is one game or the whole PS5
Look at the PS5 home screen, then open another game. If menus and several games also look soft or faded, start with console output, the display input, and the HDMI path. If only one game is affected, check that title’s graphics, quality or performance, resolution, and HDR options, and consult its own guidance. Console-wide settings cannot establish which rendering mode a particular game uses.
Check the PS5’s current resolution and signal
- Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Review Current Video Output Signal and the connected HDMI device information. Compare the reported signal with the resolution and modes your TV or monitor supports.
- With Resolution set to Automatic, the PS5 selects the highest resolution it detects the display can support. If the display is confirmed to support 4K but the reported output is lower, check the TV input and each device in the HDMI path. You can also set Resolution to 2160p for a compatible 4K display.
Sony says a 4K output requires a compatible 4K screen and the PS5’s Resolution setting at 2160p. A 2160p console output does not establish that every game renders internally at native 4K; a game’s own rendering behavior is title-specific. Sony’s PS5 resolution guide explains the console’s output options.
If the image looks washed out, compare HDR settings
HDR can change contrast, brightness, and color compared with SDR. If the picture is gray, faded, too dim, or overly bright, compare the two PS5 HDR output modes rather than assuming one is right for every setup.

- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
| HDR setting | What it does | When to compare it |
|---|---|---|
| On When Supported | HDR content is output in HDR; games and apps that do not support HDR remain in SDR. | Use this to avoid converting non-HDR content to HDR output. |
| Always On | Converts even games and apps that do not support HDR to HDR output. | Compare the appearance with the same game or app, especially if non-HDR content looks different from expected. |
- Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR.
- Try On When Supported and compare the same scene in the affected game.
- For HDR-supported content, choose Adjust HDR and follow the console’s calibration steps. Check the TV or monitor’s input-specific picture and HDR controls in its manual as well.
Displays handle HDR differently, so there is no universal brightness value or picture mode to recommend. Sony notes that image quality depends on the home entertainment setup; see its PS5 HDR guide for the console’s options.
Do not switch RGB Range as a blanket washed-out-picture fix
The PS5’s RGB Range setting is not a general color or brightness control. Sony advises changing it only when the HDMI device is not sending RGB range information correctly. First confirm that the TV is on the intended input and that the signal path is working as expected. If you have evidence of a range mismatch, check the display manual before changing the setting; a blind switch between Full and Limited can make levels look worse.

Isolate the HDMI cable, port, and other devices
A receiver, soundbar, capture device, cable, or TV port can affect which signal reaches the display. Try the following checks:
- Make sure both ends of the HDMI cable are firmly connected and the TV is on the correct input.
- Use the HDMI cable included with the PS5 where available. Sony recommends it for high-performance features, while noting that older HDMI cables can also be used.
- Try another HDMI cable and another TV port, if available.
- Connect the PS5 directly to the TV or monitor temporarily, bypassing a receiver, soundbar, or capture device.
- Check for display firmware updates and consult the display manual for input-specific resolution requirements.

For 4K/120 Hz, verify every part of the signal path
If the problem is that 4K/120 Hz is unavailable, confirm that the display supports that mode, the PS5 is connected to the appropriate high-bandwidth HDMI port, and the cable is rated for the signal. Sony names the included cable or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz. Intermediary equipment can also affect the signal, so test a direct connection and make sure the display firmware is current. Support for 4K/120 Hz is not uniform across displays and other equipment; check the specifications and manuals for your exact models.
Use Video Transfer Rate only when the screen flickers
Video Transfer Rate is a flicker troubleshooting option, not a fix for blur or washed-out color. If the screen flickers, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Video Transfer Rate and try -1 or -2, as Sony suggests. These options limit some 4K high-bandwidth output formats; at -2, 4K at 50/60 Hz uses YUV420. Check whether flicker stops and whether the resulting mode limitations are acceptable.
