A portable monitor’s “No Signal” message usually means it is not receiving video on the selected input. Check that the monitor and source are on, select the input that matches the cable, and reseat the connection. If you are using USB-C, verify that the computer’s port and the monitor both support video over USB-C; the connector shape alone does not guarantee it. Use the monitor’s supplied cable and provide any power the model requires.
Work through these checks first
- Turn on both devices. Confirm the monitor is powered on and the computer or other source is active. Reseat the signal cable at both ends. The ASUS MB229CF Customer Service Manual advises checking the USB-C or HDMI cable and making sure the signal source is on. Indicator lights and buttons vary by model.
- Select the matching input. Choose HDMI when the cable is connected to the monitor’s HDMI input, or the appropriate USB-C input when using USB-C. Input names and menu steps differ by monitor, so check its manual if you cannot find the setting.
- Check USB-C video support on both devices. Look up the exact computer and monitor specifications. A USB-C port may support charging or data but not video. ASUS says a direct USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode connection requires video support on both devices; Dell gives similar guidance for the C1422H, P1424H, and Pro P 14 Portable Monitor P1425.
- Try the supplied cable. ASUS recommends starting with the cable included with the monitor. If you need a replacement, confirm that it supports USB-C video or DisplayPort Alt Mode and meets the requirements of both devices. A USB-C plug or charging capability does not prove that a cable carries video.
- Provide the required power. Connect a separate power source if the monitor’s documentation recommends or requires one. Power can affect whether a monitor operates correctly, but it cannot make a non-video USB-C port send a picture.
- Install a driver only when the connection needs one. Direct USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode is plug-and-play in ASUS’s guidance. Its USB 3.0 DisplayLink connection, by contrast, requires the relevant DisplayLink driver. Check the exact monitor documentation and download any required driver from the manufacturer’s official support page.
- Test HDMI if both devices support it. Connect a compatible HDMI path, select HDMI on the monitor, and supply any separately required monitor power. Check both manuals before buying an adapter or assuming a particular HDMI connection will work.
Diagnose the connection method
The right fix depends on how the monitor receives video. These methods are not interchangeable: each has different port, cable, power, and software requirements.

USB-C troubleshooting: verify the port, cable, and power
Confirm video capability, not just the connector
USB-C describes a connector, not a guarantee that a device can output video. Check the computer’s specifications for video output over USB-C, often described as DisplayPort Alt Mode, and confirm that the portable monitor accepts that signal. ASUS’s USB-C portable-monitor support guidance explains the distinction. Dell’s no-video guidance applies specifically to its C1422H, P1424H, and Pro P 14 Portable Monitor P1425; it notes that a computer port limited to data or power will not deliver video to those monitors.

Use a cable rated for the required video path
Begin with the supplied cable, as ASUS recommends. If it is missing or damaged, check the replacement’s specifications for USB-C video or DisplayPort Alt Mode support and verify that the source and monitor support the same connection. Dell flags certain USB-C-to-DisplayPort and USB-C-to-HDMI cable arrangements for the models covered by its article, so do not treat that model-specific guidance as universal.

Check the monitor’s power needs separately
Some portable monitors need an external power source or a particular level of USB power. Requirements vary: LG’s Gram +View troubleshooting guidance specifies that the connected device must support DisplayPort Alt Mode and provide at least 7.5 W (5 V / 1.5 A) of USB PD output. That threshold is for the Gram +View, not a general requirement for portable monitors. Consult your model’s documentation for its own power needs.
When to try a driver or another input
Do not install DisplayLink software simply because USB-C is not working. ASUS distinguishes direct DisplayPort Alt Mode, which it describes as plug-and-play, from its USB 3.0 DisplayLink approach, which needs a driver. Confirm which connection your exact monitor uses, then obtain any necessary software from its manufacturer.

If the source and monitor both support HDMI, it can help isolate a USB-C compatibility or cable problem. Connect the HDMI cable, choose HDMI as the input, and follow the monitor’s power instructions. Check the manuals for adapter compatibility rather than assuming any USB-C-to-HDMI adapter will work.

- Confirm that the source port and monitor input both carry the intended video signal.
- Check the monitor manual for the supported connection type, power requirements, and any adapter restrictions.
- For USB-C, look for explicit video or DisplayPort Alt Mode support in the cable specifications—not just charging or data support.
- Buy a power adapter only after confirming the model’s required voltage, connector, and power rating.
Exact menu paths, supported resolutions, refresh rates, adapter models, and reset procedures depend on the monitor and source. Consult both devices’ current manuals before applying model-specific settings.
