A newly assigned U.S. street address can be valid locally yet absent from USPS or a private delivery service’s database. Local governments assign addresses and report them to USPS; USPS and private providers maintain separate systems that do not necessarily update at the same time. The claim that the address data in this particular incident was a year old is not independently verified by the official sources cited here, so it should not be attributed to USPS or any specific provider without case records.
Why can’t a company find a new-build address?
There is no single address database that every postal service, map, retailer, and delivery app consults. In the United States, the local government assigns the street address. USPS manages postal address records and delivery routes, while the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Address Database compiles records from state, local, and tribal government address programs. Apps and delivery services may use private address-data companies. These systems are related, but they are not one instantly synchronized database.
USPS says the local government is responsible for reporting a newly assigned address to USPS Address Management for future inclusion in delivery routes. After USPS verifies an address, businesses that use USPS data may still need additional time to update their own systems. A valid address in the local government’s records—or even in USPS lookup—therefore does not guarantee that a particular retailer, carrier, or map provider can find it yet.

How do I get USPS to recognize my new address?
- Confirm the official address. Check with the local government that assigned the address. Verify the street spelling and number, and include the correct unit or apartment designation.
- Allow 5–7 business days after assignment. USPS recommends this interval before checking its ZIP Code Lookup. A successful match includes the assigned ZIP+4.
- If it is still missing, contact USPS. A resident can contact the local Post Office or submit a Growth Management Assistance Request. Builders and developers can use that request to reach a USPS Growth Coordinator. USPS does not state that one route is faster than the other.
What if USPS finds the address but another service does not?
Contact the company whose system is missing the address and ask it to correct or refresh its address data. If it uses a private address-data vendor, the company may need to work with that vendor. USPS cautions that businesses using USPS address data may need additional time to update after postal verification; GPS.gov also notes that apps and delivery services obtain address information from private sources.
USPS says changes and corrections to its national database appear in ZIP Code Lookup within 30 to 60 days. That is a timeframe for the USPS lookup display, not a service-level promise for private databases, every carrier, or every map. The reviewed sources provide no universal schedule for those systems.

What the address-data figures do—and do not—show
The USPS Office of Inspector General reported that 4.2 million delivery points were deleted from the USPS Address Management System across fiscal years 2011–2021—about 380,000 per year on average. These figures show that delivery-point records change over time. They describe removals, not new-home additions, update delays, or homes affected by stale data, and do not explain the age or cause of the record in the specific incident.
