The hidden microphone described in October 2024 reports was part of Bop Spotter, an art project by Riley Walz. A solar-powered Android phone used Shazam to identify nearby music, while a companion website displayed recognized songs. The microphone also picked up ambient street sound, including traffic and muffled voices, according to the reports. Bop Spotter was not San Francisco’s ShotSpotter gunshot-detection system.
What was the microphone doing?
Bop Spotter was designed to identify music playing outdoors in the Mission District and turn those identifications into a public playlist. The project’s premise was to document the neighborhood’s changing sound—not to detect gunshots or catch criminals.
The San Francisco Standard quoted language from the project website describing it as “a constant feed of what’s popping off in real-time,” while also acknowledging that people might not notice or consent. That tension is central to the project: it was presented as art about public music, but it used a microphone operating without people nearby necessarily knowing it was there.
How did Bop Spotter work?
In reports published October 1, 2024, the setup was described as an Android phone mounted on a pole, powered by small solar panels and connected to a downward-facing microphone. The phone ran Shazam to recognize songs; the companion website displayed track entries and timestamps. The San Francisco Standard also reported that the site showed the phone’s battery level and let visitors click a song to hear a snippet. San Francisco Standard | Mission Local

The reports differ on audio-clip duration: Mission Local described 10-second recordings fed to Shazam, while the Standard described 20-second snippets available through the website. Those are each publication’s descriptions, not confirmation that every recording or playback used the same duration.
Mission Local said the setup needed a location with natural light and Wi-Fi. Its report described the recordings as containing sounds such as honking, buses, laughter, and muffled voices as well as music. The Standard reported that more than 400 songs had been logged in the first days after installation; Mission Local gave an earlier count of more than 200. These were historical counts from the project’s early operation, not current totals.

Was it listening to conversations?
The available reports establish that the microphone picked up ambient sound alongside music, and that muffled voices could be audible in recordings. They do not establish that Bop Spotter was designed to recognize conversations, how any voice audio was retained, or whether it remained accessible beyond the described song entries and snippets. It would therefore be inaccurate to say that it captured only music—or to claim more about its handling of voices than the reports document.

Is Bop Spotter the same as ShotSpotter?
No. Bop Spotter was Walz’s music-identification art project. ShotSpotter is a separate gunshot-detection system documented by San Francisco and used by the city’s police department. Their similar names do not mean they shared equipment, operators, purpose, or audio-handling practices.
| Feature | Bop Spotter | ShotSpotter |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Identify nearby music using Shazam, as described in 2024 reporting. | Detect and locate impulsive sounds such as gunshots, according to the city’s surveillance impact report. |
| Context | Art project created by Riley Walz. | Municipal technology documented by San Francisco and SFPD. |
| Audio handling described in sources | Reports describe short recordings used for song identification and song snippets on a website; the reports differ on clip duration. | SFPD’s September 10, 2021 policy says live audio streaming is not possible and temporary sensor audio is deleted after 30 hours unless an event triggers review. |
| What the sources do not establish | Current operating status, exact location, or a complete account of voice-audio retention. | Any connection to Bop Spotter; none is established in the cited city documents. |
The ShotSpotter details in the table are SFPD’s description of its own policy, not independent test findings and not evidence about Bop Spotter. The city’s surveillance impact report lists the Mission among ShotSpotter coverage areas and describes sensors typically placed on buildings or sometimes lampposts. - 【Wide-Area Wireless Scan】Think your meeting is private? In larger meeting rooms or hotel spaces, scanning for hidden devices often takes time as you walk around until a signal becomes clear. As your camera detector spy camera finder, its extendable antenna helps steady RF pickup, giving a better sense of direction in wide areas. With adjustable sensitivity, you can avoid missing WiFi cameras. And for non-WiFi pin-hole cameras, the infrared scan reveals disguised tools like a prepared privacy pen.
- 【Infrared Scan】Ever wonder what’s watching you in a new hotel room? Tiny pin-hole cameras can hide in smoke detectors, clothing hooks, chargers, or fixtures you’d never notice. In a completely dark room, the infrared scan in this camera finder hidden camera detector makes hidden lenses reflect as a bright spot—revealing what the eye can’t see. Sweep mirrors, vents, picture frames, chargers, and wall fixtures; it also works as a hidden bug and camera detector to give you peace of mind before you settle in.
- 【Anti-Theft Alarm Mode】Don’t Let Danger Catch You Off Guard. While you’re asleep in a hotel room, hang this anti spy detector on the door handle—any attempt to open the door triggers an instant alert, waking you before someone gets close. And when you’re out and your luggage isn’t always in sight, attaching it to your suitcase adds protection; even slight movement sets off a loud alarm to alert you to theft. Paired with your hidden camera finder, it keeps you aware and protected wherever you go.
- 【Anti-GPS Tracking Scan】Is your car truly safe? GPS trackers can cling to your car with magnets and quietly send out your location. As your gps tracker detector, this device detects the magnetic fields where a tracker is attached and the signals its rf detector picks up when your location is shared. Sweep hiding spots—under seats, along bumpers, near the inside edge of tires. Before you drive, this spy camera detector helps you catch hidden trackers early and avoid someone following you.
- 【Pocket-Size & Long Battery Life】Every hotel room and office you enter should feel safe. With up to 25 hours of battery life and a true pocket-size build, this device stays ready all day—no hunting for outlets during trips or long workdays. Slip it into your pocket for hidden camera detectors for travel, quick hotel scans, or fast checks of unfamiliar offices—giving you steady peace of mind wherever you go.
What do San Francisco’s surveillance rules establish?
San Francisco’s 19B process requires review and approval for surveillance technologies held or used by city departments. SFPD’s policy page describes a broad definition that includes technology collecting or processing audio that may be associated with people or groups. Those rules explain municipal review requirements; they do not determine whether a specific permit applied to Bop Spotter, whether the privately installed project complied with other laws, or whether it was legal.
