A wrong Google Maps pin can mean three different things: the blue dot is misestimating your current position, a searched address or business record is mapped incorrectly, or a manually dropped pin was placed beside the intended spot. Identify which case you have first. Browser permissions, connectivity and obstructions affect the blue dot; a public address or listing requires a map-data correction; and a manually selected point should be checked at high zoom and shared with coordinates or a Plus Code when the street address is ambiguous.
First identify which pin is wrong
Google Maps uses the word “location” for several separate data sources. The blue dot is an estimate of the device’s current position. A marker you find by searching for an address or place comes from Google’s map and geocoding data. A pin created with a press-and-hold gesture or a map click is simply the coordinate you selected. The fix depends on which one is inaccurate.

The blue dot is not a business or address correction
The blue dot is Google’s estimate of where the device is now. A light-blue circle around it shows the area in which you could be; a smaller circle indicates greater confidence. If the dot is gray or absent, Maps may be displaying the last location it was able to determine rather than a fresh fix. Correcting a public address will not repair this live estimate.
A searched marker is a map-data problem
If searching for an address consistently places the marker on the wrong parcel, road or building, the issue is with the address or geocoded map record. It can remain wrong even when your own blue dot is accurate. Google’s documentation notes that geocoding accuracy varies by country, so judge the returned location type against what you need: a country, city, street, building or a precise entrance are not equivalent results.

A dropped pin is only as precise as the point you selected
A nearby street number shown after you drop a pin does not prove that the selected coordinate is the correct entrance, loading area or building. At neighborhood scale, a small screen movement can put the point on a parallel road or the opposite side of a property. Inspect the map at a closer zoom before sending it.
Fix a wrong blue dot in a computer browser
The following sequence reflects Google’s current computer/browser troubleshooting guidance. It is intentionally not an Android or iPhone menu path; mobile operating systems expose different permission screens.
- Allow Maps to use your location. In the browser, grant the Google Maps page permission to access location. If you previously blocked it, change the browser’s location permission and return to the map.
- Reload the Maps page. A reload makes Maps request a new position instead of continuing to display an old estimate.
- Check the internet connection. Confirm that the computer is connected and that the connection is strong enough for Maps to obtain and refresh location information.
- Recheck the browser permission. If the dot remains wrong, inspect the page’s location permission again. A browser-level block can override what you expect Maps to be allowed to do.
- Restart the computer. If the position is still incorrect after the permission and connection checks, restart the computer and open Maps again.
Test for an environmental obstruction
Move away from tall buildings and parking structures if you can, then watch the uncertainty circle. Walls, concrete and surrounding structures can interfere with the signals used to estimate a position. A smaller circle after moving is evidence that the environment, rather than the searched address, was affecting the estimate. Do not treat the circle’s diameter as a guaranteed error radius or as the accuracy of a particular door.

What the circle and dot states mean
- Blue dot with a small light-blue circle: Maps has a relatively confident estimate.
- Blue dot with a large light-blue circle: Your possible position covers a larger area, so the estimate is uncertain.
- Gray dot or no current dot: Maps may be showing the last location it could determine, or it may not have a usable current fix.
These indicators describe confidence in the live estimate; they do not change the address stored for a public place.

Report a wrong public address or map pin
Use the public correction flow when a searched address or place is mapped incorrectly. Google allows people to add or edit addresses and adjust pin locations, but a submission is not an automatic change.
- Open Google Maps on a computer and search for the address.
- Select Suggest an edit.
- Choose Wrong pin location or address.
- Enter the corrected address or move the pin to the appropriate location in the form.
- Submit the correction.
Google does not promise an immediate update, a particular review time or approval for every submission. If the marker still looks unchanged after you submit it, that does not by itself mean the form failed; the edit may be awaiting review or may not be accepted. Avoid presenting a submitted correction as proof that the public record has already changed.
When the address is ambiguous
Some destinations have a valid locality but no dependable street number, or several entrances that share one postal address. In that situation, report the address error if the public listing is wrong, but give visitors an explicit coordinate or Plus Code for the point you actually mean. This separates the task of improving Google’s map record from the immediate task of guiding one recipient.

Correct a pin you dropped yourself
A manually dropped pin is not necessarily an error in Google’s database. It is a selection on the map, and the adjacent address label can refer to the nearest mapped address rather than the exact point under the pin.

- Return to the map area and zoom in until you can distinguish the building, road, entrance or trail you intend to identify.
- Press and hold on a touchscreen, or click the map in a computer browser, to place a new pin.
- Inspect the selected point rather than relying only on the address text that appears.
- Move the selection if it is on the wrong side of the road, a neighboring building or a nearby parcel.
- Copy the resulting coordinate or Plus Code and send that identifier with the locality when an ordinary address could be misunderstood.
Google’s Plus Codes announcement describes this same press-and-hold action as a way to create a code that can later be entered in Maps to locate and navigate to the selected point. A pin can therefore be useful even when no conventional street address exists, provided the recipient knows exactly which point you selected.
Use coordinates or a Plus Code when the address cannot be trusted
Coordinates state latitude and longitude directly. A Plus Code is a compact location code that Google Maps and Google Search can resolve without an extra app. Both can identify a point more clearly than an ambiguous street label, but they have different sharing characteristics.

How to share a Plus Code
- Open Google Maps and press and hold the intended point to drop a pin.
- Open the information for that point and copy its Plus Code.
- When using a short code, add the town or locality in the same message or search. A short code without its area context can be ambiguous outside the local region.
- Send the code through your normal message or navigation workflow and tell the recipient what the point represents, such as an entrance, meeting place or trailhead.
Google says Plus Codes can be used in Maps and shared, and that the relevant region can be used offline when it has been downloaded as an Offline Map. No additional app is required to use Plus Codes in Google Maps or Google Search.

Google’s Plus Codes support documentation states that two characters after the plus sign define an area smaller than 14 × 14 meters, while three characters after the plus sign define an area smaller than 3 × 3 meters. Those are code-area dimensions. They are not a measurement of your phone’s GPS accuracy, and they do not guarantee that a navigation instruction will end at a particular door, gate or driveway.

Google describes Plus Codes in its support material as “free for anyone to use, forever.” The code can improve how you communicate an intended map point, but it cannot make an uncertain live position more accurate or automatically repair a public address record.

Buildings and structures obstruct the live estimate
Tall buildings and parking structures can interfere with the signals and other information used for a current-position estimate. That is why Google shows an uncertainty circle and why moving to a more open location can change the dot without any map data being edited.
Permission or connectivity prevents a fresh fix
A browser that cannot access location, or a weak internet connection, may leave Maps with an old or incomplete estimate. Reloading after correcting permission and checking connectivity gives the page another opportunity to obtain a current position.

When Maps turns an address into a point, the result is a geocode. Google’s Maps Platform documentation cautions that the quality and precision of geocoded results vary by country. A result that is adequate for a city-level search may be unsuitable for a building entrance, and a valid-looking label can still point to the wrong side of a parcel.

The searched record and the live device position are independent
Your blue dot can be accurate while a business listing is misplaced, or a listing can be correct while the blue dot is uncertain inside a garage. Treat these as separate systems: troubleshoot the device estimate for the former and submit a map edit for the latter.
A practical decision workflow
- Look at the symbol. If the complaint is about the blue dot or its light-blue circle, follow the browser location steps. If it is a searched marker, use the correction flow.
- Check the environment. For a large uncertainty circle, move away from tall buildings or a parking structure and observe whether confidence improves.
- Verify the intended point. For a pin you created, zoom in and compare the coordinate with the actual entrance or site you mean.
- Choose the identifier. Use the public edit form to improve a wrong address; use coordinates or a Plus Code for an immediate, unambiguous share.
- Set expectations. A submitted edit may not appear immediately, and no source-supported review duration or acceptance guarantee is provided.
Common situations and the safest response
“The dot is across the street from me.”
Check whether the light-blue circle is large, then verify browser permission and connectivity, reload, and restart the computer if necessary. If you are beside tall buildings or inside a parking structure, move to a more open area and reassess. Do not submit a public address edit unless the searched address itself is wrong.
“The address search lands on the wrong building.”
Use Suggest an edit followed by Wrong pin location or address. The form is the appropriate route for a public map record. While the correction is being reviewed, send the intended coordinates or Plus Code to anyone who must reach the site.
“The label names a nearby road, but I need a gate or entrance.”
Drop the pin directly on the entrance after zooming in. Share the resulting coordinate or Plus Code and describe what the point represents. A nearby address label alone does not establish that the pin is at the gate.
“A short Plus Code does not work for someone in another town.”
Add the locality to the code. Short Plus Codes are local identifiers; the town or area supplies the context Maps needs to resolve them correctly.
“I submitted an edit and nothing changed.”
Google does not state a universal review time or guarantee acceptance. Keep using the coordinate or Plus Code for time-sensitive directions rather than assuming the public marker has already been updated.
Limits you should keep in mind
- There is no established universal percentage for how often Google Maps pins are wrong, no general accuracy figure for every country and location type, and no guaranteed correction turnaround.
- A Plus Code’s stated area size is a property of the code system, not a promise about a phone’s GPS reading or the final point reached by navigation.
- Current computer-browser instructions should not be presented as exact Android or iPhone menu paths; mobile permission interfaces differ by operating system and version.
- Correcting a public map record and fixing a live blue-dot estimate are separate actions. Performing one does not automatically perform the other.
Bottom line
Start by deciding whether you are looking at the blue dot, a searched public address, or a manually selected point. For the blue dot, restore browser location permission, verify the connection, reload, restart if needed, and move away from signal-obstructing structures. For a wrong public marker, submit Suggest an edit → Wrong pin location or address and allow for an unspecified review process. For a pin you need to share immediately, zoom in and send its coordinates or a Plus Code with the locality; that gives the recipient a clear target without pretending that an uncertain GPS estimate or an unreviewed address record is already fixed.
