A game can be translated and still display English when a visible phrase was never included in the translation files, is baked into artwork, or fails to load from the installed game’s language resources. “Fully translated” usually describes the intended localization package—not proof that every screen, image, mode, and update has been checked. The “fifty places” in the title is not a verified count; the available official guidance explains causes and testing methods, not how common these leftovers are.
Why English can remain in a translated game
Some text bypasses the translation files
Games typically translate text that has been separated from the code into language-specific resources. A label written directly into the game’s code may not be part of that handoff. Netflix Games’ requirements say that UI text should be externalized in resource bundles, and that hardcoded English or text burned into an image will not be translated through that process (Netflix Games Internationalization Requirements).
The English is part of an image, video, or other asset
A sign, button graphic, diagram, tutorial screenshot, or video can contain English as pixels rather than as a replaceable text string. Translating the dialogue and menus will not change those pixels; the developer needs to create a localized asset or use a rendering approach that supplies translated text separately. Localization can also extend beyond dialogue and UI to images, videos, sample data, websites, and support materials (Microsoft’s guidance on localizing games).
The translation exists but the game does not load it
A localized entry can be missing from the shipped package, stored under an unexpected locale or key, or not selected at runtime. Microsoft’s Xbox Game Development Kit documentation describes packaged resources and default-resource fallback when a language-specific title resource is unavailable. The exact rules depend on the platform and the game’s implementation; the GDK behavior should not be assumed to apply to every game (Microsoft GDK: Localization of packaged resources).

A missed screen or update escaped testing
A translation spreadsheet can look complete even if nobody checked a particular menu, achievement, downloadable-content screen, error message, tutorial branch, optional mode, or newly added feature in the running build. Microsoft advises considering separate review and testing for each localized language version. A localization handoff can also lack context: translators may need screenshots, a build, character information, or an explanation of where a short string appears to interpret it correctly (Microsoft’s game-localization guidance).
What to check as a player
- Check the game’s language setting. Confirm it is set to the language you want; where the game offers no separate setting, check the platform’s language or region setting.
- Check for an update. A patch may include corrected or newly packaged language resources.
- Restart the game. Some games choose a language when they launch, so a change may not appear until the next start.
- Record the exact leftover. Note the screen or item, game version, platform, selected language, and steps that lead to the English text. If surrounding text is translated, that detail can help support distinguish a single missed string or asset from a general language-setting problem.
These checks can rule out common configuration issues, but without a named game and its build details they cannot identify the cause of a particular English phrase.

How developers can trace the source
Start with the text as it appears in the shipping build, then follow it backward to the asset or resource that produced it. Different sources call for different fixes:
| What the English comes from | What to inspect | Likely area to fix |
|---|---|---|
| A UI string or message | Whether a target-language entry exists for the expected locale and key, and whether the build resolves that entry | String extraction, translation coverage, locale selection, or runtime fallback |
| Code or an image/texture | Whether the phrase is a code literal or part of the asset rather than a resource-backed string | Externalize the text, or supply and load a localized visual asset |
| A packaged language resource | Whether the localized file is included in the package and installed, and what default resource is used if it is absent | Package layout, locale identifiers, installation, or fallback configuration |
| A particular screen or game path | Whether that screen, mode, error state, or update was exercised in the localized build | Localization QA coverage and the handoff of context to translators |
Microsoft’s product-localization overview recommends identifying the full set of user-visible material and separating translatable content so it can be extracted, translated, and reinserted through a controlled workflow (Microsoft: Localize your product).

How to prevent English leftovers
Make user-visible text discoverable
Externalize strings rather than leaving them as code literals. Give translators descriptive keys and enough context to understand each string’s role, and provide screenshots or a build when wording depends on the screen. Inventory text in visual assets, videos, optional modes, and supporting screens rather than limiting the handoff to dialogue and menus.
Use pseudolocalization early
Pseudolocalization replaces ordinary text with test text designed to expose problems before real translations arrive. It can reveal strings that were not connected to the localization system, text that expands beyond a button or panel, and some missing glyph coverage. Netflix’s guidance describes it as a way to catch expansion and concatenated-string problems; Godot’s documentation also covers non-localizable text and layout issues (Netflix Games Internationalization Requirements; Godot: Internationalizing games).

Pseudolocalized Latin text is not a substitute for testing real writing systems. Godot specifically cautions that readable pseudo-Latin text does not effectively test Chinese, Japanese, Korean, or right-to-left font support. Use the actual target languages to check glyphs, direction, layout, and other language-specific behavior.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTest the built game, not only the translation files
Review localized builds in context, covering high-risk and less frequently visited screens as well as normal gameplay. Check language switching and the packaged resources on the platforms that ship the game. For language-split packages, verify both the package manifest and what is actually installed; Microsoft’s GDK documentation describes language-tagged chunks and ways to test their installation or selection (Microsoft GDK: Localization of packaged resources).
Why “fifty places” is not a measured figure
The official guidance cited here describes localization failure modes and ways to find them, but it does not establish a typical number of English leftovers or how often such defects occur. Treat “fifty places” as title wording, not an industry statistic. Netflix’s guidance includes illustrative estimates of language expansion—around 40% horizontally for German versus English and up to 70% vertically for Thai—but these are planning examples, not universal measurements (Netflix Games Internationalization Requirements).
