A Fitbit watch face usually fails to install or sync for one of five reasons: the phone app cannot reach the gallery, Bluetooth or internet access is interrupted, the face is incompatible with your model or region, the watch needs Wi-Fi or a firmware update, or the developer has removed the face. Start in the Google Health app at Connections > your device > Watch faces > Clocks, keep the watch beside the phone, and then work through the checks below in order.
Identify the failure before changing settings
The symptom tells you which part of the process is broken. A gallery error points to the phone or network; an install that starts and stops often involves permissions, Wi-Fi, firmware, storage, or compatibility; a face that disappears from the list may no longer be available for your model, region, or account.
| What you see | Most likely area to check first |
|---|---|
| The Watch faces or Clocks gallery will not load | Phone internet access, the Google Health app, or Android Private DNS |
| The face is listed but Install fails | Bluetooth proximity, app permissions, Wi-Fi requirement, firmware, or the device’s installed-app limit |
| The face installs but does not appear on the watch | Sync completion, model compatibility, or a second phone or tablet competing for the Bluetooth connection |
| A previously used face is missing | The developer may have removed it, or it may not be offered for the current Fitbit model or region |
| Only an SpO2 face or app fails | Fitbit device firmware may need to be updated |
| A third-party face is unavailable in the European Economic Area | Regional availability changed in June 2024 |
Install or change the face through the supported path
Use the Google Health app rather than trying to install a face from a web browser or from the watch alone. The labels can vary slightly by app version, but the documented route is the same.

- Put the Fitbit within a few feet of the phone and leave it there during installation.

- Choose Clocks, select the face, and tap Install.
- Wait for the installation and the next sync to finish before closing the app or moving away from the watch.
If the face is already installed and you want to change it, follow the same path and choose another compatible face. If the face never appears in Clocks, treat that as an availability or compatibility question rather than repeatedly tapping Install.

Restore the phone-to-Fitbit connection
Check the basics first
- Keep the Fitbit close to the phone. A weak Bluetooth link can let the gallery load while the actual installation or sync fails.
- Confirm that Bluetooth is enabled and that the phone can reach the internet over Wi-Fi or mobile data.
- Look for pending updates to the Google Health app and install them before trying again.
- Allow the app to run in the background. If the operating system suspends it, the transfer can stop when you switch apps or lock the phone.
- Review the permissions requested by the Google Health app and by the face. A face that requests data or sensors may not work if the required permission is denied.
Restart and manually sync
For a general sync failure, restart the Fitbit first. Reopen the Google Health app, keep the watch nearby, and start a manual sync. Google’s general sync guidance also calls for checking Bluetooth and internet access before moving to platform-specific steps.
If another phone or tablet nearby is signed in to the same account or has the Fitbit paired, it can capture the Bluetooth connection. Temporarily stop the other device from connecting, or follow Google’s platform-specific sync instructions to remove conflicting app or Bluetooth pairings. Android and iPhone pairing procedures are not identical, so use the instructions for the platform you actually use.
Fix the Android “no Internet connection” gallery error
Google specifically documents an Android failure in which the Watch faces or Clocks tab displays “Oops, looks like there’s no Internet connection” even though the phone can otherwise go online. The Google Health Help Center says this is often caused by an Android Private DNS setting.

- Open Android Settings.
- Search for Private DNS (on some phones this is under Network & internet or More connection settings).
- Set Private DNS to Off.
- Open the recent-apps view, find Google Health, and swipe it away or use Force stop from its app-info screen.
- Reopen Google Health, return to Connections > your device > Watch faces > Clocks, and try again.
This is a targeted remedy for that Android gallery message, not a universal explanation for every failed installation. If the gallery opens normally, continue with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, permissions, compatibility, and firmware checks instead.
Check Wi-Fi, permissions, and app limits
When the Fitbit itself needs Wi-Fi
Some larger apps and clock faces need a Wi-Fi connection on the Fitbit rather than only a data connection on the phone. Google identifies the Fitbit Sense, Versa, Versa 2, and Versa 3 as devices where this requirement can apply.
- Make sure the watch has been connected to a supported Wi-Fi network in its device settings.
- Keep the watch charging or sufficiently charged while a large face transfers.
- Check for updates to both the Google Health app and the Fitbit device before retrying.
- Leave the Google Health app open in the background until the transfer and sync complete.
A face that is small enough to install over the phone connection may still fail if its package requires the watch’s Wi-Fi. The requirement is determined by the face or app, so a successful installation of one face does not prove that every face uses the same transfer method.

Stay below the installed-app ceiling
On Sense and Versa-series devices, Google says the watch cannot exceed 38 installed apps when updating a clock face. If you are at that limit, remove an app you no longer use, sync the watch, and then retry the face installation. Count the apps on the watch itself, not merely the items visible in the phone gallery.

Phone requirements
Google lists these minimum operating systems for the Google Health app:
| Phone platform | Minimum operating system listed by Google |
|---|---|
| iPhone | iOS 16.4 or later |
| Android phone | Android 11 or later |
Meeting the minimum does not guarantee that every phone works. Google’s setup information also identifies particular phone models with known compatibility issues. Because supported models and minimum versions can change, check the current Google Health setup and compatibility page if your phone meets the version requirement but cannot complete pairing or syncing.

Fitbit model compatibility
Clock faces are tied to the Fitbit model for which they were built. A face that worked on an older Versa or Sense may not be offered for a newer device, and an upgrade can therefore make a familiar face disappear or refuse to install. In the gallery, confirm that the selected face lists your exact model as compatible before troubleshooting the connection further.
Developer removal
A face can also vanish because its developer removed it from the gallery. In that situation, reinstalling the app, resetting Bluetooth, or changing DNS cannot restore it. Choose another face that is currently listed for your model, or contact the face’s developer if the listing provides a support route.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsEuropean Economic Area availability
Google states that, beginning in June 2024, users in the European Economic Area could no longer install third-party apps and clock faces through the Google Health app. A selection of Google Health and Google apps remains available. If a third-party face is missing only when you are in an EEA country, the regional policy—not your Bluetooth connection—may explain the difference.

Update firmware for an SpO2 face or app
If the problem is specifically an SpO2 clock face or SpO2 app, Google’s advice is to update the Fitbit device to its latest firmware and then try adding it again. This recommendation is specific to SpO2 content; do not treat a firmware update as the automatic cure for every face that fails to install.
- Open Google Health and select the Fitbit under Connections.
- Check the device screen for a firmware update and install it if one is offered.
- Keep the watch near the phone, with Bluetooth and internet access available, until the update and subsequent sync finish.
- Return to Watch faces > Clocks and add the SpO2 face or app again.
Use this order when the first attempt fails
The following sequence avoids changing several variables at once and helps identify whether the fault is local to the phone, the connection, or the face itself.
- Record the details. Note the Fitbit model, phone model, phone operating system, whether the face is first-party or third-party, and the exact error text.
- Confirm the route. Use Google Health > Connections > device > Watch faces > Clocks, and verify that the face is listed for your model.
- Stabilize the link. Turn on Bluetooth and internet access, place the phone beside the Fitbit, and keep Google Health running in the background.
- Update and retry. Install pending Google Health updates; check the Fitbit firmware, especially for an SpO2 face or app.
- Test the watch’s Wi-Fi. This matters particularly for larger faces and for Sense, Versa, Versa 2, and Versa 3.
- Remove capacity and pairing conflicts. On Sense and Versa devices, stay at or below 38 installed apps. Prevent another nearby phone or tablet from pairing with the Fitbit while you retry.
- Apply the platform-specific fix. On Android, turn Private DNS off and force-stop and reopen Google Health if the gallery shows the documented no-internet message. On iPhone, use Google’s iOS sync and pairing steps rather than Android instructions.
- Classify the remaining failure. If the face is absent, check regional rules and developer removal; if it is present but incompatible, select a face built for your exact model.
What not to do
- Do not assume a gallery error proves that the phone has no internet; Android Private DNS can produce that specific message while other apps remain online.
- Do not repeatedly reinstall a face that the developer removed or that is blocked by regional availability.
- Do not apply the EEA third-party-content rule to Google Health or Google-developed faces; Google says a selection of those remains available.
- Do not treat Wi-Fi as mandatory for every face. The requirement applies to some larger apps and faces on specified Fitbit models.
- Do not reset the watch as an opening step. A reset can remove local settings and data while leaving a model, region, or developer-availability problem unchanged.
When to contact support
If the face is listed for your model, the phone meets the current app requirements, Bluetooth and internet access are working, the watch is nearby, and the relevant Wi-Fi, permission, firmware, and app-limit checks pass, use Google Health’s official support flow for the remaining sync or installation failure.
For third-party faces, Google directs users to the face developer. For an app or face made by Google or Fitbit, contact Customer Support. Include the model, phone platform and OS version, region, exact error message, and the steps that already succeeded or failed; those details distinguish a connection problem from a compatibility or availability decision.
Quick Recap
Prevent future face-sync problems
- Keep the Google Health app and Fitbit firmware current.
- Leave Bluetooth enabled when you expect a face or app to sync.
- Keep the Fitbit close to the phone during installation and the first sync.
- Allow Google Health to run in the background and review permissions after a major phone update.
- Maintain a working Wi-Fi connection on Sense, Versa, Versa 2, or Versa 3 when installing larger content.
- Stay below the 38-app limit on Sense and Versa-series devices.
- Before changing phones or Fitbit models, check whether the face is offered for the new model.
- If you use Android and the gallery begins showing the documented no-internet message, check Private DNS before changing unrelated network settings.
Quick reference
| Condition | Action |
|---|---|
| Gallery says “Oops, looks like there’s no Internet connection” on Android | Set Private DNS to Off, force-stop Google Health, reopen it, and retry |
| Face transfer stops on a Sense, Versa, Versa 2, or Versa 3 | Check watch Wi-Fi, app updates, permissions, Bluetooth, and background operation |
| Sense or Versa cannot update a face with many apps installed | Reduce the installed-app count to 38 or fewer, sync, and retry |
| Only an SpO2 face or app fails | Update Fitbit firmware, then add it again |
| Face is missing after changing models | Confirm that the face supports the new model |
| Third-party face is unavailable in the EEA | Check the June 2024 regional restriction; third-party clocks cannot be installed through the app there |
