A corded vacuum is often the better buy when your home has a lot of carpet, pets, or large areas to clean in one session, because it never runs out of battery and never pauses for a recharge. A cordless stick makes more sense for quick pickups, stairs, and anyone who wants a light machine they can grab in seconds. The cord is only part of the decision, though. Within the corded-stick category, individual models perform very differently on carpet and bare floors, so the specific model matters as much as the power source.
Who should choose a corded vacuum
- Homes with substantial carpet. Carpet is where models differ most, so a corded machine with strong carpet results is a better fit than a light stick that struggles on it.
- Pets. TechRadar argues that corded uprights suit pet owners, extensive carpet, and larger households. That is editorial guidance, not a controlled comparison of every vacuum.
- Long or frequent cleaning sessions. A corded machine has no battery runtime limit, so you do not have to stop mid-clean to charge it.
- Larger dust capacity. TechRadar cites larger dust cups as a practical convenience, which means fewer emptying breaks during a long session.
Where a cordless stick still wins
- Quick pickups. Grabbing a single mess from the kitchen floor is faster without unwinding a cord.
- Stairs and multi-level homes. Carrying a light machine up and down stairs is easier than managing a cord that must follow you across every landing.
- Light handling. Some corded sticks are light too, but cordless designs are the usual choice for people who want the lightest, most grab-and-go machine.
Cordless models in Consumer Reports’ 2026 buying guide list runtime and charge time for each model. Compare those figures with how long you actually clean in a typical session before deciding.
Which cleans better: cordless or corded vacuums?
The available evidence does not rank cordless and corded vacuums against each other on the same scoring basis, so it cannot say that one type cleans better across the board. What it does show is that corded sticks alone vary widely. Consumer Reports’ 2026 results for three corded sticks illustrate the spread.

Scores and prices come from Consumer Reports’ 2026 Buying Guide for Vacuums, a PDF copy whose host upload date is December 30, 2025, and from its March 17, 2026 article on the worst vacuums it tested. Each figure describes one model in that guide, not corded or stick vacuums as a category. The guide prices are snapshots and were not checked against live retail listings.
#1 Best Overall
- 2-IN-1 STICK & HANDHELD VACUUM: Converts to a handheld vacuum for stairs, furniture, car interiors, and tight spaces. A small hand vacuum ideal for pet hair, couches, and above-floor cleaning.
- CARPET & HARD FLOOR CLEANING: Deep-cleans carpets while capturing debris on hardwood, tile, laminate, and bare floors—perfect for homes needing one versatile vacuum for multiple surfaces.
- POWERFUL CORDED SUCTION: This vacuum cleaner delivers nonstop corded power to deep-clean carpets, rugs, and bare floors for everyday performance throughout your home—no charging needed.
- LIGHTWEIGHT & VERSATILE DESIGN: Weighing under 10 lbs., this lightweight vacuum is easy to carry, steer, and store, making it ideal for quick cleanups, stairs, apartments, and whole-home cleaning.
- PET HAIR PICKUP: Easily remove pet hair and debris from carpets, stairs, and upholstery with the included Pet Multi-Tool and Crevice Tool. Powerful suction makes this an ideal pet vacuum for homes with dogs and cats.
The practical reading: the Shark PowerDetect HZ4002 scored well overall, while the Shark Rocket HV301 is strong on bare floors and only so-so on carpet. A carpeted home would weigh that carpet result heavily, and a hard-floor home would not.
Cord reach, weight and emptying
A corded machine trades battery limits for reach limits. The 30-foot cords listed for the Shark PowerDetect HZ4002 and UltraLight PetPro HZ702 are model specifications, not proof of a cleaning advantage. Weight also varies. The corded-stick models shown in the 2026 guide range from 3 to 9 pounds, so a corded vacuum is not automatically the heavier choice. Check the listed weight for the exact model you are considering, especially if you carry the machine up stairs.

How to decide for your home
Use these six criteria to compare any two models:
- Carpet and bare-floor debris pickup, read separately.
- Pet-hair and edge pickup.
- Weight and handling.
- Cord reach against real-world cordless runtime and recharge time.
- Dust cup or bag capacity and how often you must empty it.
- Storage, filters, and maintenance.
Verify before you buy
- Confirm the exact model number and its current price on the manufacturer’s or a retailer’s product page. Guide prices change.
- Measure the longest run from a wall outlet to the farthest room, then compare it with the listed cord length. Thirty feet covers less ground than it sounds once furniture and stairs are in the way.
- Decide which floor covers most of your home, and use the carpet or bare-floor result that matches it.
- Check the weight against who will be carrying the machine, especially on stairs.
- Confirm that replacement filters, belts, and brush rolls are listed for your exact model. These parts are model-specific.
What the evidence does not establish
- No population-level figure shows that corded vacuums are a better buy overall. The scores above describe individual models.
- Lifetime ownership cost and lifespan are not established. TechRadar makes a general durability argument for corded uprights, but it does not provide comparative long-term reliability data.
- No same-basis head-to-head between cordless and corded models is available in the sources reviewed here.
- Prices are guide prices from the 2026 buying guide, not current retail prices.
