A missing WhatsApp contact is usually caused by one of four things: WhatsApp cannot read your phone’s contacts, an iPhone is allowing access to only selected people, the number is not saved in full international format, or a work account is restricting contact access. Start by searching WhatsApp directly, then check the permission and contact settings for your phone.
The symptom can look different depending on the cause. You may be unable to find someone when starting a chat, see a phone number instead of a saved name, or find that only one newly added person is absent while everyone else appears normally. The steps below separate those situations so you do not reset more of the phone than necessary.
Start with WhatsApp’s own search
Before changing settings, determine whether the person is absent from WhatsApp entirely or merely missing from the contact picker. Open the Chats tab and search for the person’s saved name or phone number. On an iPhone, pull down on the Chats list if the search field is not visible. WhatsApp also provides search from the Calls tab.
- Search the saved name exactly as it appears in your phone’s address book.
- Search the complete phone number, including the country code if it is an international number.
- Repeat the search from the Calls tab.
If the person appears in search but not in the normal new-chat list, the problem is usually contact access or a stale contact list. If neither name nor number appears, check the saved number and the relevant permission settings next.

This first check also prevents a common mistake: changing permissions when the conversation is already discoverable. A result in search shows that WhatsApp can identify the conversation or number in some way. The remaining issue may be how the contact is displayed, which contacts are selected, or whether the visible list has been refreshed.
iPhone: restore WhatsApp’s access to contacts
WhatsApp cannot show names it is not allowed to read. iOS can grant WhatsApp full access to your address book or limited access to only contacts you select. The choice applies to what WhatsApp can see; it does not delete the underlying entries from the iPhone.
Give WhatsApp full contact access
- Open Settings on the iPhone.
- Go to Privacy & Security > Contacts.
- Select WhatsApp.
- Choose Full Access if you want WhatsApp to see all contacts in the address book.
Apple documents this as the system-wide control for deciding which apps can access contacts. Depending on the iOS version, you may also reach the same control through Settings > WhatsApp and then its Contacts permission. If the labels on your iPhone differ, use Settings search for “WhatsApp” or “Contacts” rather than guessing at a different menu.
Full Access is the simplest choice when several people are missing or when you regularly add new contacts and expect them to appear automatically. It allows WhatsApp to read the address-book entries that are already on the phone and the ones you add later.
Check limited access and the selected-contact list
Limited access is a common reason for one or a few people to be missing. Under the WhatsApp Contacts permission, choose the option to edit or manage selected contacts, then add the missing person. A contact created later will remain invisible to WhatsApp until it is included in that selected set.
This explains a useful pattern: if most people appear but one newly saved contact does not, the phone may be working normally and WhatsApp may simply be restricted to an older selection. You do not need to change every contact; add the person to the allowed set or switch to Full Access.
When checking the selection, look for the exact address-book record you intend to use. If the same person exists twice, one entry may be selected while the corrected or newly created duplicate is not. Confirm which record contains the current number before deciding that WhatsApp has failed to sync.
If the WhatsApp permission is unavailable or greyed out
WhatsApp advises checking iPhone Screen Time restrictions when its Contacts permission cannot be changed. Open Settings > Screen Time and review Content & Privacy Restrictions, including any setting that prevents apps from requesting or using contacts.
A restriction can make the permission appear unavailable even though the contact itself is valid. After reviewing those controls, return to the WhatsApp permission page and see whether Contacts access can be selected. If another person manages Screen Time on the device, that person may need to make the change.

If WhatsApp remains missing or disabled in the permission controls after those restrictions are addressed, restoring the iPhone may be necessary. Treat that as a last resort, follow Apple’s current support instructions, and do not assume a restore is a guaranteed fix. A restore changes the phone more broadly than the contact problem itself. Do not jump to it before checking limited access, selected contacts, and Screen Time.
Android: allow Contacts permission and refresh the list
Android manufacturers place permission controls in slightly different menus, but the relevant setting is the same: WhatsApp must be allowed to access Contacts. A Samsung, Pixel, or other Android phone may use different names such as Applications or App management.

- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps (sometimes called Applications or App management).
- Select WhatsApp.
- Tap Permissions.
- Choose Contacts and set it to Allow.
Google’s general Android guidance confirms that app permissions are changed from device settings, while noting that the exact labels and path vary by phone. If you cannot find the menu, use the Settings search box for WhatsApp, Contacts, or app permissions. You are looking for the Contacts permission specifically, not a general notification or phone permission.
After enabling access, reopen WhatsApp and search again by both name and number. This gives the app an opportunity to read the address book under the new permission. If only one person remains missing, inspect that person’s saved entry and number format before attempting a reset.
Use WhatsApp’s documented Android refresh sequence
If permission is already allowed but names or numbers are still stale, WhatsApp documents a reset-and-refresh procedure for Android:
- Open the phone’s Android account settings.
- Remove the WhatsApp account listed there.
- Reopen WhatsApp.
- Start a new chat.
- Open More options and choose Refresh.
WhatsApp says removing the account in this particular procedure does not delete WhatsApp messages, contacts, or other data from the phone. Read every confirmation prompt carefully because account-setting screens differ by manufacturer and Android version. The instruction concerns the WhatsApp account entry in Android’s account settings; it is not a request to erase the WhatsApp app or delete your phone’s address book.
WhatsApp also warns that refreshing can remove entries from WhatsApp’s list if their contact information has already been deleted from the phone. That means the refresh can make the list more accurately reflect the current address book, but it cannot restore a contact that no longer exists there. Verify the entry in the phone’s Contacts app first.
Do not use this step merely because one search failed. Confirm Contacts permission and the saved contact data first, then follow the sequence exactly if the list is stale. Because Android account-setting paths vary, follow the official instructions for your device and read each prompt before confirming the account removal.
Check how the number is saved
Use full international format
For an international contact, save the number with the plus sign and country code, followed by the national number. The exact number of digits depends on the country, so copy the complete international form supplied by the contact or carrier rather than guessing where a local prefix belongs.

A locally formatted number may work inside one country but fail to match the WhatsApp account when the contact is abroad. Edit the existing address-book record rather than creating several slightly different versions. Then search WhatsApp again by the full number. If the old version remains in your address book as a duplicate, remove or correct the duplicate so WhatsApp is not matching the wrong record.
When comparing entries, check the country code, the complete national number, and whether an old local-format record is still present. The goal is one accurate contact record that WhatsApp can read through the phone’s permitted contacts.
Check whether the contact belongs to a work Exchange account
A contact stored in a work Microsoft Exchange account can be subject to an organization’s mobile-app policy. WhatsApp identifies Exchange restrictions as a possible reason it cannot access those contacts. Ask the account administrator whether third-party apps are blocked from reading the Exchange address book and whether the policy can be changed. This is an administrator issue, not a WhatsApp contact-refresh setting.
The symptom is often selective: personal contacts appear, while a colleague stored only in the work account does not. In that case, repeatedly changing WhatsApp permissions may not help because the organization controls access to the account. Explain to the administrator that WhatsApp needs permission to read the relevant Exchange contacts and ask whether the policy allows that access.
Why messages can work even when the name is missing
Contact-name visibility and messaging access are separate. WhatsApp says that denying contact permission does not stop you from receiving messages or participating in groups. An existing conversation can therefore continue to work while the phone number appears instead of the person’s saved name.

In that situation, the app can identify the conversation, but the phone-level contact record and WhatsApp’s synced name are not the same thing.
This distinction helps explain why a group member can remain reachable even though the person is absent from the new-chat contact list. It also explains why seeing a number does not automatically mean the account is blocked or that messages cannot be delivered. Check the address-book permission and saved record before treating the chat as a separate account problem.

Verify the result without creating another problem
- Search by both the saved name and the full phone number.
- Confirm that the corrected entry is in the phone address book, not only in an account that WhatsApp cannot access.
- On iPhone, verify whether WhatsApp has Full Access or whether the person is included in Limited Access.
- On Android, confirm that the Contacts permission reads Allow before attempting a refresh.
- After changing a permission, close and reopen WhatsApp, then search from Chats and Calls.
- If you use an Exchange work account, have the administrator confirm the policy rather than repeatedly resetting WhatsApp.
These checks separate a discovery problem from a synchronization problem. Finding the person through search means the account is discoverable and the remaining issue is usually how contacts are displayed or selected. Finding nothing after the number and permission checks points to the saved contact data or an account-access restriction.
Test one change at a time when possible. For example, first correct the country code and search again; if that does not help, check permission. On iPhone, record whether the person is in the selected-contact list before switching to Full Access. On Android, confirm the permission before using the account-removal refresh. This order makes it clear which setting solved the problem and avoids unnecessary broad changes.

What not to do first
- Do not restore an iPhone before checking limited contact access and Screen Time restrictions.
- Do not remove the Android WhatsApp account as a first step; verify Contacts permission and the number format first.
- Do not assume a missing name means messages or groups are unavailable; WhatsApp explicitly separates those functions from contact-name access.
- Do not broaden a work-account problem into repeated phone resets when an Exchange administrator may control the setting.
- Do not create multiple duplicate entries with different number formats while troubleshooting; correct the existing record and search again.
- Do not expect a refresh to recreate a contact that has already been deleted from the phone address book.
When the problem is resolved
The contact should appear under the expected name after WhatsApp can read the correct address-book entry and refreshes its view. On iPhone, that means the person is within the permitted contact set; on Android, it means Contacts permission is allowed and the list has been refreshed if it was stale. For an international number, the entry must retain its complete country-coded format. If only an Exchange contact remains unavailable, the organization’s access policy is the remaining control point.
Run the final check from both Chats and Calls. Search the person’s name, then the full number, and open the result to confirm that it is the intended conversation. If the number still appears, compare the WhatsApp result with the exact address-book record and revisit the permission that governs that record. A successful message or group conversation does not by itself prove that contact-name access has been restored.
