A 100Hz monitor may show 60Hz because Windows selected that rate, the desired 100Hz mode is unavailable at your current resolution, or something in the connection path limits the signal. Check the selected display in Windows first, then verify the monitor’s model-specific input and resolution limits and test the connection directly. A 100Hz label alone does not guarantee that every input or setup supports 100Hz at every resolution.
Check the refresh rate Windows has selected
- Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display. Microsoft’s instructions apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11; labels can vary slightly by build. Microsoft’s refresh-rate guide explains the available settings.
- If you have more than one display, choose the 100Hz monitor in the display selector.
- Check the refresh-rate menu. If 100 Hz is listed, select it and confirm the Windows readout shows the intended rate.
The available rates depend on the selected display and its supported modes. If a rate has an asterisk, Windows indicates that it does not support the current resolution; choosing it may change the resolution. A game’s frame-rate counter is not a substitute for checking the selected display’s refresh rate in Advanced display.
Confirm that the monitor supports 100Hz in your intended mode
Find the exact monitor model number and check its manual or manufacturer specifications. Confirm both the maximum refresh rate at your chosen resolution and whether that mode works through the input you are using, such as HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C. An advertised maximum does not establish support for every input-resolution combination. General Windows guidance cannot determine the limits of an unspecified monitor.

Also confirm that the monitor is set to the input connected to your computer. MSI’s external-display troubleshooting guidance includes checking the monitor’s input source when refresh rate or resolution is below expectations.

Test the full connection path
The signal passes through more than the cable: the monitor input, computer or GPU output, cable, and any dock, adapter, KVM switch, or receiver can affect which modes are available. Change one part at a time so you can identify where the limitation lies.
- Reseat the cable at both ends.
- If the monitor is connected through a dock, adapter, KVM, or receiver, temporarily connect it directly to the computer. Use a computer output and monitor input documented to support 100Hz at your intended resolution.
- Try another supported output on the computer or input on the monitor.
- If available, test with a known-good cable that supports the required resolution and refresh rate.
- Test the monitor on another system, or connect another display to the same computer. These checks can help isolate whether the limitation is on the monitor side or computer side.
Microsoft’s external-monitor troubleshooting guide recommends checking the cable, trying another video output, and testing the monitor on another system. Replacing a cable is a diagnostic option, not a guaranteed fix; choose one only after checking the exact ports and required mode.

Check the graphics driver if the mode disappeared after an update
If 100Hz was available before a graphics or system update but has since disappeared, investigate the display driver. Microsoft’s external-monitor troubleshooting options include rolling back a driver when problems follow an update and reinstalling it if needed. Use the instructions for your specific computer or GPU.

Retest and narrow down what is limiting 100Hz
After each change, return to Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, select the correct monitor, set your intended resolution, and check whether 100Hz appears and is selected. If it remains unavailable, note these details before contacting the monitor or computer manufacturer:
- Monitor model and intended resolution
- Computer or GPU model and the output port in use
- Monitor input selected
- Cable type and every dock, adapter, KVM, or receiver in the signal path
- Refresh rates listed in Advanced display
Compare the setup across mode, monitor input, computer output, signal path, and driver state. Without those model and connection details, there is no reliable way to name one universal cause or rank the possible causes by likelihood.
