In Chess Machines Cup II, 30 of 37 games reportedly ended in threefold-repetition draws. The event organizer’s explanation was that models without a plan shuffled pieces back and forth. That is a plausible reading of this event, not proof that small language models generally behave this way in chess.
What happened in Chess Machines Cup II?
In a report published September 23, 2026, organizer Evgenii said 30 of the 37 Cup II games ended in threefold repetition. The models played chess through API calls without chess engines or other tools; Stockfish was used afterward to assess move quality. The figures below are the organizer’s reported results, not independently verified statistics. Read the event report.
Threefold repetition is a draw rule: a game can be drawn when the same position occurs three times, with the same player to move and the same possible moves. In practical terms, a player may keep returning pieces to familiar squares, and the opponent may do the same. The event’s 30 draws are therefore not 30 games that ended because a model explicitly announced it had no plan; they are games the report says concluded under the repetition rule.

How did Cup II compare with Cup I?
The organizer compared Cup II with Cup I, an event described as featuring larger models. The reported figures point to more drawn, less decisive games in Cup II and weaker move-quality measures. The events were not established as a controlled experiment, so the comparison should be read as a description of these two tournaments rather than a general model-size test.
| Measure | Cup I | Cup II |
|---|---|---|
| Decisive games | 67% | 19% |
| Checkmates | 19 | 4 |
| Repetition draws | 15 | 30 |

| Moves classified as blunders costing at least three pawns | 27% | 36% |
| Illegal moves on the first try | 42% | 53% |
The event report defines lower average centipawn loss as better and attributes the analysis to Stockfish. It does not provide the underlying game set or enough analysis settings to reproduce the figures from the retrieved page. The percentages and counts are the organizer’s event-specific numbers.

Why repetition can coexist with poor chess
A repetition draw is not necessarily evidence of sound defensive play. A model may make a move that can be answered by returning to the previous arrangement, then repeat that local pattern without improving its position or pursuing a winning plan. A game can therefore avoid a loss by repetition while still containing weak moves. The reported 321 average centipawn loss per move in Cup II, alongside 30 repetition draws, illustrates why the result of a game and the quality of its moves are different measures.
For scale, the same organizer reported that Gemini 3.6 Flash had an average of 37 centipawns lost in Cup I, while the best Cup II model by that measure, Gemma 4 31B, had 247. Those are results from different event fields, not a standardized cross-event benchmark; they should not be treated as a direct, controlled comparison of the models.

Does the result prove small LLMs shuffle when they have no plan?
No. Evgenii summarized the interpretation with the line, “When a weak model has no plan, it shuffles.” That is the organizer’s explanation of the observed games, not a demonstrated causal finding. The report does not establish what internal reasoning produced each repeated move, or that small language models generally respond to uncertainty by repeating positions.
Several limitations matter when interpreting the claim:

- The 30-of-37 result describes one event and its particular set of games.
- The report compares different tournaments, but does not establish that their composition and conditions were controlled.
- The models differ by family as well as size, so the figures do not isolate parameter count.
- The published page does not provide the complete game records and analysis details needed to independently reproduce the result.
How did the clock and API setup affect the event?
Each move had a 60-second limit. The organizer said some reasoning models repeatedly approached that limit, and that one model was disqualified after failing to answer for five moves in one game. The report also says providers sometimes ignored requested reasoning-effort settings or a token budget. When reasoning was fully disabled, responses arrived in one to two seconds, while move quality remained mid-table in that event. These are the organizer’s observations; the report does not document controlled latency trials.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Provider availability affected the event too: the author said three games were annulled after an inference provider rate-limited play, and that such games were replayed under the event rules. That operational disruption is not evidence about chess skill.
For Cup III onward, the organizer described a 45-second “kick”: if no move arrived, the same attempt would be resent with reasoning disabled so a response could arrive before the 60-second limit. The report said that retry would not count as a failure. This is a planned event procedure as described by the organizer, not a general property of chess APIs.
What can readers reasonably conclude?
The event report documents a striking outcome: 30 of 37 Cup II games reportedly ended in repetition, while the same report describes fewer decisive games and worse average centipawn loss than in Cup I. It offers a useful example of how a language model playing chess through an API can produce repeated positions under a tight move clock. It does not show that repetition is inevitable for small models, or establish that model size caused the result.
