Latin America would face the greatest direct economic exposure if the United States suddenly stopped exporting diesel, according to Goldman Sachs estimates reported by Investing.com. The analysis is hypothetical: the report describes a threat and models a possible ban; it does not say one is in force. Goldman estimates the shock could reduce Latin American GDP by around 1%, with inventories and replacement supplies cushioning the impact.

Latin America faces the largest projected activity hit
Goldman’s reported analysis identifies Latin America as the region most vulnerable to a sudden cutoff of U.S. diesel supply. Its estimate of an approximately 1% GDP reduction is a conditional scenario result, not a forecast of a certain or already realized loss. Goldman expects existing inventories and additional exports from other suppliers to soften the effect. The estimate was reported by Investing.com on October 2, 2026; the original Goldman note and detailed model assumptions were not available in the cited reporting.
Mexico, Chile, and Brazil are the leading direct U.S. destinations
U.S. Energy Information Administration trade data shows Mexico was the largest destination for U.S. distillate exports in 2025, followed by Chile and Brazil. These figures show the scale and direction of U.S. trade, not how much of each country’s total diesel demand depends on U.S. supply.

The EIA attributes some changes in Brazil’s U.S. supply to Brazilian buyers purchasing discounted Russian fuel after the EU banned Russian distillate imports in December 2022. Why export volumes do not tell the whole story
A large direct trade link can indicate exposure, but a country’s actual vulnerability also depends on whether it has stocks to draw on and whether other suppliers can deliver substitute fuel quickly. Goldman’s reported analysis says inventories and increased exports from other suppliers would dampen the Latin American shock. It does not provide country-by-country inventory coverage or quantified replacement volumes, so the available figures cannot support a precise vulnerability ranking among Mexico, Chile, and Brazil.
The distinction matters beyond Latin America. Goldman sees relatively small direct activity effects outside the Americas because those regions rely less on U.S. imports and supply could be reallocated relatively quickly. Yet an importer can face indirect effects from higher global diesel prices even if it does not depend heavily on U.S. barrels.

How much U.S. fuel supply is at stake?
The EIA says U.S. exports of major petroleum-based transportation fuels averaged 2.4 million barrels per day in 2025, about the same as in 2024. Distillate fuel oil—chiefly sold as diesel—accounted for more than half of that total. This broader transportation-fuel figure should not be mistaken for diesel exports alone.

What could a ban mean for U.S. fuel prices?
According to Investing.com’s October 2 report of Goldman’s estimates, a ban could initially lower U.S. retail diesel prices by 25 cents per gallon for each week it lasted. The same report says Goldman expects that effect to reverse after roughly two months, when diesel storage capacity is exhausted and gasoline prices rise. It attributes a possible increase of $0.30 per gallon in U.S. retail gasoline prices for each week of a ban after that storage constraint is reached. These are conditional estimates reported secondhand, not observed price changes or guaranteed outcomes.
The potential reversal reflects a trade-off over time: keeping more diesel at home could ease diesel prices at first, but limited storage capacity may eventually constrain the system and put pressure on gasoline prices. The cited report does not provide further assumptions about how quickly storage would fill in different market conditions.

Could the shock spread to global inflation?
Goldman estimates that each sustained 10% rise in diesel prices would add 0.1 percentage point to global headline inflation and 0.03 percentage point to core inflation. The reported effects are larger in emerging Asia and Europe. These estimates describe price spillovers, rather than direct losses caused by reduced U.S. deliveries, and are attributed to Goldman by Investing.com.
Goldman analysts were quoted by Investing.com as saying: “Refined product margins have widened significantly since March, and the threat of a US diesel export ban has raised concerns around further price increases.” The quote is attributed to unnamed analysts; the underlying Goldman note was not available for direct verification.
