Bank of America named George Sherman chief technology officer for its Global Banking and Markets and Global Commercial Banking businesses, SecurityWeek reported on June 8, 2010. Sherman had held the title of chief IT risk and security officer at Morgan Stanley; the announcement was for a business-unit technology leadership role, not a new bank-wide security chief.
What Bank of America announced
Bank of America announced the appointment on June 7, 2010, according to SecurityWeek’s report published the following day. Sherman was named CTO for the bank’s Global Banking and Markets and Global Commercial Banking businesses.
His announced remit covered strategy, architecture, design and build, operations, product management, and project delivery for the technology infrastructure supporting those businesses. SecurityWeek said he was expected to be based in New York, join in September, and report to Bank of America CTO Marc Gordon. Those were the plans stated at the time; the report does not establish whether or when he completed the move.
Sherman’s Morgan Stanley and Chase experience
At Morgan Stanley, Sherman had served as managing director and CTO of the Americas enterprise infrastructure organization, chief IT risk and security officer, and IT chief operating officer. SecurityWeek described him in 2010 as having spent more than 10 years at the firm.

The headline refers to Sherman’s previous Morgan Stanley position. Bank of America’s appointment gave him a CTO role overseeing technology infrastructure for two named business units. The announcement does not describe him as Bank of America’s chief information security officer or establish that security was his new title or sole responsibility.
