SecureWorks appointed retired U.S. Army Colonel Barry R. Hensley vice president of its Counter Threat Unit (CTU) on May 3, 2010. Before joining the company, he directed the Army’s Global Network Operations and Security Center (AGNOSC), overseeing operations and defense for the Army portion of the Global Information Grid. The appointment connected large-scale military network defense experience with SecureWorks’ threat research and customer intelligence work.
What was Hensley’s role at SecureWorks?
SecureWorks’ May 3, 2010 announcement said Hensley joined as vice president of its Counter Threat Unit. SecurityWeek reported the appointment on May 4, a day after the company announcement. SecureWorks’ announcement via PR Newswire and SecurityWeek’s report establish the timing.
The company described the CTU in 2010 as a team that identified and analyzed emerging cyber threats, developed countermeasures for customers, and delivered early warning and actionable threat intelligence tailored to client environments. That is SecureWorks’ description at the time of the appointment, not confirmation of the unit’s present structure or services. SecureWorks’ 2010 announcement
What experience did Hensley bring?
Army network operations and defense
According to SecureWorks, Hensley had directed AGNOSC, which handled operations and defense for the Army portion of the Global Information Grid. The announcement described that network as serving more than 1.2 million users. That figure refers to the Army network in scope in 2010; it is not a current network or user count. The link between the two roles was their focus on protecting complex networks: Hensley’s prior remit involved large-scale Army network operations and defense, while SecureWorks said the CTU researched threats and translated intelligence into countermeasures and warnings for clients. The announcement does not document measurable outcomes attributable to his appointment.
Career and education
SecureWorks’ biographical account said Hensley began his Army career in 1986 through ROTC and served for 24 years in communications and information leadership roles. It listed assignments connected to Operation Desert Shield in Saudi Arabia, Operation Restore Hope in Somalia, and Operation Iraqi Freedom. The announcement also reported that he held a BBA in Information Systems and an MS in Telecommunication and graduated from the National War College. SecureWorks’ 2010 announcement
