As of October 9, 2026, four Nobel Prize categories had been announced. The clearest named example of contributors beyond the laureates is optogenetics: the Medicine Prize went to three researchers, while reporting also identifies Ernst Bamberg and Edward Boyden as contributors to the field. That does not establish that either was nominated or rejected. Nobel nominations and deliberations remain confidential, so “left out” describes the limits of a prize citation—not a proven committee snub.
Who was left out of the 2026 Nobel Prizes?
No public record establishes who was nominated for the 2026 prizes and then passed over. The strongest specific example of contributors beyond the named laureates is the work behind the Physiology or Medicine Prize: the award recognized Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel for developing optogenetics, while other researchers also contributed to the field.
In an October 6 report, Le Monde described Ernst Bamberg and Edward Boyden as figures “overlooked by this Nobel Prize.” The report discusses Bamberg’s role in early work on light-sensitive algal proteins and Boyden’s collaboration with Deisseroth in applying optogenetics to brain circuits. They are contributors outside the three-person award citation; the report does not establish that either was a 2026 nominee. “Overlooked” is the newspaper’s characterization, not proof of a mistake or unfair decision by the committee.
Why the optogenetics example has limits
Optogenetics combines genetics and light to control neural activity, letting researchers switch targeted neurons on or off to investigate brain circuits. The Nobel-recognized work is a research technique; possible clinical uses are not the same as established treatments. The story therefore includes both foundational work on light-sensitive proteins and later application of the technique. The three laureates are the people named in the award, not an exhaustive list of everyone whose work contributed to the field.

What the announced prizes recognized
The prizes below differ in discipline, the scale of collaboration, the distance between discovery and application, and the wording of their citations. They are not comparable measures of who “deserved” recognition.
| Category | 2026 recognition announced by October 9 | What that says about contributors beyond the citation |
|---|---|---|
| Physiology or Medicine | Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel, for developing optogenetics and work on light-gated ion channels. (Nobel announcement) | The technique’s history includes other researchers; Le Monde names Ernst Bamberg and Edward Boyden as contributors outside the laureates. That reporting does not establish their nomination status. |
| Physics | Francis Halzen, for “decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin.” (Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences citation) | IceCube is a large collaborative project. Fermilab’s account describes a detector at the South Pole using light sensors in a cubic kilometre of ice, and the Associated Press emphasizes the scale of the research effort. The award citation names Halzen; those accounts do not identify an individual as a rejected nominee. |
| Chemistry | Henri B. Kagan and Kenso Soai, for work controlling which mirror-image form a chemical reaction produces. (Associated Press account) | The chemistry is relevant to medicines, according to the AP account. The available reporting does not name a person excluded from this prize. |
| Literature | Anne Carson, for an inventive body of work in dialogue with classical tradition and creating new forms for contemporary literature. The Swedish Academy citation, reproduced by the AP, calls it “her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature.” | The AP describes work across poetry, prose, translation, and collaborations. The citation recognizes Carson’s body of work; the available reporting does not identify a specific person left out. |
These examples show why the phrase “left out” can mean different things. In a scientific prize, it may point to a larger team, earlier groundwork, or later application beyond the citation. In literature, it may refer to the inevitable selectivity of recognizing one writer’s body of work. Neither interpretation reveals whom a committee considered or why it chose its laureates.

Can we know who was nominated?
No—not from the public record for 2026. The Nobel Peace Prize committee says, “The Committee does not announce the names of nominees, neither to the media nor to the candidates themselves.” Nomination and assessment information remains confidential for 50 years. A published list of laureates and citations therefore cannot be used to reconstruct the full pool of candidates or committee deliberations.

Public numbers about prize candidates or likely future laureates do not fill that gap:
- The Norwegian Nobel Committee had 287 Peace Prize candidates in 2026, according to the Associated Press on October 9. Just over a quarter were organizations. This is a count of candidates, not nominations, and it does not identify the candidates.
- Clarivate named 22 Citation Laureates in 2026. Clarivate explicitly says its list is not intended to predict Nobel recipients in a particular year.
- Clarivate also reported that fewer than 0.02% of more than 67 million articles and proceedings indexed in Web of Science since 1970 had received more than 2,000 citations. That is a Clarivate statistic about its indexed records, not a Nobel committee standard or a measure of who deserved a prize.
There is no comparable official quotation in the available record identifying an individual as “left out.” Claims about a named person’s nomination, rejection, or treatment would go beyond what these sources establish.

As of October 9, 2026, the Peace Prize announcement was scheduled for later that day and the Economic Sciences announcement for October 12. Their results—and any discussion of contributors beyond the laureates—were still unresolved at that point. Accordingly, this account covers only the four categories announced by then: Physiology or Medicine, Physics, Chemistry, and Literature.
