Liebherr is a wholly family-owned group, and its shareholders are descendants of founder Hans Liebherr. The company makes refrigerators and freezers at sites in Germany, Austria, Bulgaria, Malaysia and India. That means a Liebherr appliance is not necessarily made in Germany; the company’s general production information does not identify the factory for each individual model.
Who owns Liebherr?
Liebherr is an independent, wholly family-owned company. Its shareholders are descendants of Hans Liebherr, the founder, in the second and third generations. Hans Liebherr established the group in 1949. Liebherr’s organizational overview describes it as a family-run group managed on a decentralized basis.
The central parent company is Liebherr-International AG, based in Bulle, Switzerland. Liebherr operates through independently managed divisional control companies; Liebherr-Hausgeräte GmbH coordinates the refrigerator and freezer segment from Ochsenhausen, Germany. The group’s Swiss parent-company location and its German appliance coordination site are different parts of the company structure.

Where are Liebherr refrigerators and freezers made?
Liebherr’s refrigerator and freezer production network spans five countries. Its 2026 domestic-appliance brochure names these sites:
| Country | Named production site |
|---|---|
| Germany | Ochsenhausen |
| Austria | Lienz |
| Bulgaria | Marica |
| Malaysia | Kluang |
| India | Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar |
The current 2026 brochure uses the name Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar for the Indian site. Older Liebherr materials use Aurangabad, the city’s former name.
Are Liebherr refrigerators made in Germany?
Some are made in Germany: Liebherr continues to produce refrigerators and freezers in Ochsenhausen. But Germany is only one part of the company’s current five-country production network, so the brand name or the location of its segment coordination office does not establish where a particular refrigerator was built.

How to check the origin of a specific appliance
The company’s general production information lists countries and factories, but it does not map current models to particular plants. For a specific refrigerator or freezer, check the country-of-origin marking on its product label or consult official documentation for that exact model. Do not infer an individual unit’s origin from the brand’s German roots or from the product segment’s coordination location.

Ochsenhausen’s role in Liebherr appliance history
Liebherr says its first refrigerator was manufactured in Ochsenhausen in 1954, and that the site still produces refrigerators and freezers. The company attributes just under 2.3 million refrigerating and freezer units per year to its five production sites; Liebherr does not state a year for that figure on its product-segment page.

The current appliance portfolio includes integrated and freestanding refrigerators and freezers, as well as wine-storage appliances. The locations above describe the production network, not a model-by-model assignment.
