Land Rover is a marque within Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), and JLR says it has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Motors since 2008. Tata completed its acquisition of the Jaguar Land Rover businesses from Ford on 2 June 2008, for net consideration of US$2.3 billion.
Who owns Land Rover today?
Tata Motors owns Jaguar Land Rover, the group that includes the Land Rover marque. JLR’s corporate overview identifies JLR as a wholly owned Tata Motors subsidiary since 2008. Land Rover is therefore not a separately owned public company in this corporate structure.
JLR also notes that Tata Sons is Tata Motors’ largest shareholder. That is a separate relationship: Tata Motors is JLR’s parent, while Tata Sons is a major shareholder in Tata Motors.

When did Tata Motors buy Jaguar Land Rover?
Tata Motors announced that it completed the acquisition of the Jaguar Land Rover businesses from Ford on 2 June 2008. The acquisition announcement described the deal as an all-cash transaction with net consideration of US$2.3 billion.

The announcement said the transaction included ownership or perpetual, royalty-free licences for the intellectual property necessary to operate the businesses, as well as manufacturing plants, design centres, and sales-company networks. It separately stated that Ford contributed about US$600 million to Jaguar Land Rover pension plans; that contribution was not part of the stated US$2.3 billion net consideration.
Land Rover’s brand history is older than Tata ownership
The Land Rover name and vehicle lineage long predate the 2008 corporate transaction. Land Rover’s heritage account traces its origin story to a 1947 concept sketch by Maurice Wilks. JLR dates the Series I launch to 1948 in its 70th-anniversary chronology.

Those dates mark the development and launch of the marque’s vehicles, not a corporate ownership transfer. Later model milestones include the first Range Rover launch in 1970 and the Discovery launch in 1989, as listed in JLR’s company timeline.

Ford was the seller in Tata Motors’ 2008 acquisition of the Jaguar Land Rover businesses. The transaction announcement establishes that transfer, but it does not establish every earlier ownership change or legal reorganization. A complete pre-2008 ownership chain cannot be stated confidently from the corporate sources cited here.
