Anthropic is owned by its stockholders, but it is not publicly traded and its current shareholder list and ownership percentages are not publicly disclosed in the sources reviewed here. Amazon has announced a minority ownership position; it does not own Anthropic outright. A separate body, Anthropic’s Long-Term Benefit Trust, holds special stock and has a role in electing and removing directors.
Who owns Anthropic?
Anthropic is a privately held Delaware Public Benefit Corporation (PBC), so its economic owners are its stockholders. The company describes its public-benefit purpose as the responsible development and maintenance of advanced AI for humanity’s long-term benefit. That corporate form lets directors balance stockholder financial interests with the stated public benefit and the interests of people materially affected by the company; it does not mean those stakeholders own Anthropic. Anthropic’s explanation of its governance and its transparency commitments describe this structure.
The public sources cited here do not disclose a complete, current cap table—the list of shareholders and their stakes. They therefore do not establish every current owner, the percentage held by each, or a definitive ranking of investors by ownership. Anthropic is privately held, not a company whose full share breakdown is available through public-market disclosures.

Does Amazon own Anthropic?
Amazon has said it would invest up to $4 billion in Anthropic in exchange for a minority ownership position. That wording comes from Amazon’s announcement; it describes the announced investment, not Amazon’s current percentage of all Anthropic shares. “Up to $4 billion” is an investment ceiling, not a valuation or a calculation of ownership.

The relationship also includes a commercial and infrastructure partnership. In Amazon’s announcement, Anthropic committed to using AWS Trainium and Inferentia chips and identified AWS as its primary cloud provider for mission-critical workloads; Anthropic’s models were also made available through Amazon Bedrock. These arrangements make Amazon an investor and a major business partner, but neither term alone establishes sole ownership or day-to-day control.
How the Long-Term Benefit Trust fits in
The Long-Term Benefit Trust (LTBT) is not Anthropic’s sole owner. It holds special Class T stock, created in the company’s charter, that gives the Trust authority to elect and remove board members according to time- and funding-based milestones. Anthropic’s September 19, 2023 announcement said a majority of the board was intended to be elected by the Trust within four years. The Trust’s role is therefore a distinctive part of governance, separate from ordinary investor ownership. Anthropic’s LTBT announcement explains the arrangement.

Anthropic has also said that Series C and later investors elect a board seat, giving investors a formal route to board representation. The company describes the Trust’s purpose as helping ensure that Anthropic responsibly balances stockholder financial interests, affected stakeholders, and its stated public benefit. Board seats, trustee roles, and stock ownership are related to governance, but they are not interchangeable: a director or trustee is not necessarily an owner by virtue of holding that role.

| Relationship | What it means here | What the public information establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Economic ownership | Stockholders hold shares and have financial interests in Anthropic. | Anthropic is stockholder-owned, but the sources cited here do not provide a current complete shareholder list or percentage breakdown. |
| Governance | Board elections and oversight shape company direction; the LTBT holds special Class T stock with board-election and removal authority. | Anthropic describes shared governance involving the Trust and investor representation; these roles do not make the Trust the sole economic owner. |
| Commercial partnership | Cloud infrastructure, computing resources, model distribution, and other business terms can connect Anthropic to a partner. | Amazon announced an AWS partnership alongside its minority investment. The partnership does not establish that Amazon owns or controls all of Anthropic. |
This distinction also matters beyond Amazon. A January 17, 2025 FTC staff report on AI partnerships and investments discusses how cloud-provider relationships can include equity and other rights, such as consultation, control, or exclusivity, in varying combinations. It identifies potential competition concerns including access to computing resources, switching costs, and access to sensitive business or technical information. The FTC’s analysis used information available to staff through September 2024 and public information through January 2025; it is context about partnership structures, not Anthropic’s current cap table.

- Established: Anthropic is a privately held PBC with stockholders, and the LTBT has special governance authority.
- Established as Amazon’s announced position: Amazon said it would invest up to $4 billion for a minority ownership position.
- Not established by the cited public disclosures: the complete current list of Anthropic shareholders, each shareholder’s present percentage, or a current percentage for Amazon.
- Not implied by partnership alone: sole ownership or day-to-day control by a cloud provider.
Board and trustee rosters can change, and Anthropic’s pages do not all show the same snapshot. For example, Anthropic’s February 13, 2026 announcement of Chris Liddell’s appointment lists a dated board roster, while its company page presents a governance roster separately. Those lists should not be combined as if they describe one simultaneous lineup. They also do not answer who holds what percentage of the company.
