Skynet-1A, a British military communications satellite launched in 1969, ended up at 105° west longitude above the Americas after its expected natural drift should have carried it toward the Indian Ocean. Space consultant Stuart Eves believes a deliberate thruster manoeuvre is the likeliest explanation and later said archival information pointed to 1977. But no available account establishes who moved it or why. The “ticking time bomb” label refers to a possible collision and debris hazard—not an explosive onboard or a collision known to be imminent.
What is Skynet-1A?
Skynet-1A was the first satellite in the UK’s Skynet military communications system. The BBC reported that it was built in the United States, launched on a US Air Force Delta rocket in 1969, and weighed about half a tonne. It was positioned above Africa’s east coast to relay communications for British forces. BBC News, 9 November 2024
The spacecraft stopped working a few years after launch. Although it no longer performs its communications mission, it remains in orbit as an inert object.
Why is Skynet-1A over the Americas?
The BBC reported Skynet-1A at 105° west longitude, above the Americas and about 22,369 miles (36,000 km) above Earth. That is far from the east-African position associated with its original mission. BBC News, 9 November 2024

| What is known | What it means |
|---|---|
| Its original position was above Africa’s east coast. | It was placed there to relay communications for British forces. |
| Expected natural drift was eastward toward the Indian Ocean. | That expected path does not explain the reported position over the Americas. |
| It was reported at 105° west longitude. | Eves said natural orbital drift to that location was unlikely. |
Eves’s leading explanation is that someone deliberately fired the satellite’s thrusters. In a later interview, he said archival information seemed to indicate a manoeuvre in 1977. This is his interpretation of the evidence, not an official finding that identifies an operator or confirms the manoeuvre’s purpose. The Naked Scientists, 15 November 2024
Who moved the UK’s oldest satellite, and why?
The available reporting does not establish who commanded the manoeuvre. It also does not establish its reason. Eves offered possible explanations, including freeing a radio frequency for other spacecraft or allowing the satellite’s US builders to observe how its systems aged in orbit. He also discussed the possibility that GCHQ used the satellite to locate foreign transmitters while it was operational. These are historical possibilities and hypotheses, not confirmed explanations for a later move. The Naked Scientists, 15 November 2024

Rachel Hill, a University College London PhD student, suggested another possibility: control may have been temporarily transferred to US operators while the UK control centre was down for maintenance. Orbital Today presented that as a possibility, not proof. Orbital Today, 12 November 2024

No—not literally. The phrase is a metaphor for the risk posed by an abandoned satellite in a busy orbital environment. The reporting does not describe Skynet-1A as carrying explosives, and it does not establish that a collision is about to happen.

The concern is that an inoperative satellite cannot manoeuvre itself away from another spacecraft. If a collision occurred, the impact could create debris. Eves described the satellite as moving around a “gravity well” at 105° west and passing close to other satellite traffic. The sources do not provide a verified collision probability, establish that an impact is imminent, or show that Skynet-1A will inevitably trigger a debris cascade. BBC News, 9 November 2024
Was Skynet-1A hacked?
There is no evidence in the cited reporting that Skynet-1A was hacked. A Johns Hopkins University Space Systems CyberSecurity post discusses cyber compromise as a possibility for obsolete spacecraft, but it does not establish that an attack happened to this satellite. Neither the BBC report nor Eves’s interview attributes the manoeuvre to hacking. Johns Hopkins University Space Systems CyberSecurity, 10 November 2024

What is known about monitoring or removal?
Orbital Today reported that the Ministry of Defence said the UK National Space Operations Centre constantly monitored the satellite. The same article said the UK Space Agency might need to consider removal; it did not report an approved or scheduled removal mission. These statements were published in November 2024, and they do not verify Skynet-1A’s precise orbital status in 2026. Orbital Today, 12 November 2024
