Yaroslav Askarov is a Russian goaltender whom Nashville drafted 11th overall in 2020 and traded to the San Jose Sharks in August 2024. His path from a light NHL workload in 2024-25 to a much larger one in 2025-26 marks a significant increase in opportunity, though one season’s numbers alone cannot establish his long-term role or overall level.
Who is Yaroslav Askarov?
Askarov was born in Omsk, Russia, on June 16, 2002, according to the San Jose Sharks player bio. The Nashville Predators selected him 11th overall in the first round of the 2020 NHL Draft.
On August 23, 2024, the Sharks announced they had acquired Askarov, forward Nolan Burke and a 2025 third-round pick from Nashville in exchange for forward prospect David Edstrom, goaltender Magnus Chrona and a 2025 first-round pick. The team’s announcement also said it signed Askarov to a two-year extension beginning in 2025-26, with a reported total value of $4 million and an average annual value of $2 million. Those are the terms announced in 2024; they do not, by themselves, confirm his contract status in October 2026.
Yaroslav Askarov’s NHL and AHL statistics
Keep NHL regular-season numbers separate from AHL playoff results: they reflect different competitions and should not be combined into a single line.

| Season and competition | Games and record | Goals-against average | Save percentage | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024-25 NHL regular season | 13 games; 4-6-2 | 3.10 | .896 | San Jose Sharks 2025-26 season preview |
| 2024-25 AHL Calder Cup Playoffs, San Jose Barracuda | 3-2 | 1.68 | .935 | San Jose Sharks 2025-26 season preview |
| 2025-26 NHL regular season | 47 games; 21-20-4 | 3.63 | .884 | InGoal Magazine profile |
The 2024-25 figures come from the Sharks’ season preview. InGoal Magazine reports the 2025-26 NHL line; a primary NHL statistics source has not been confirmed here, so treat that later-season figure as secondary-source reporting rather than an independently verified career total.
What the numbers say about his development
The clearest change across the cited seasons is workload: Askarov played 13 NHL games in 2024-25 and InGoal Magazine reports 47 in 2025-26. That is evidence of substantially more NHL playing time, not proof on its own that he had secured a settled starter role.

His 2024-25 AHL playoff line was strong, but it belongs to a different league and a short postseason sample. It should not be treated as interchangeable with NHL regular-season performance. Likewise, goals-against average and save percentage are affected by team defense, opponents and other circumstances; neither statistic alone provides a complete verdict on a goalie.
