The giant bird visible in the distance in Helheim in God of War (2018) is commonly identified by players as Hraesvelgr, a great eagle associated with Helheim in Norse mythology. That is a plausible interpretation, not a confirmed name in the game: the official sources cited here do not identify the creature. It is also different from the smaller Odin’s Ravens you can find as collectibles.
Why players think the bird is Hraesvelgr
Hraesvelgr is a giant eagle associated with Helheim in Norse mythology, making the name a natural fit for the enormous bird seen in the realm. Community discussions commonly use that identification. But the association is not proof that the 2018 game intends the creature to be Hraesvelgr: the official material cited here contains no in-game text, developer statement, or other direct confirmation naming it.

It is safest to describe Hraesvelgr as the likely or commonly proposed identity, rather than a fact established by the game. Norse mythology helps explain the interpretation; it does not settle the question of what God of War (2018) confirms.
Is the giant bird one of Odin’s Ravens?
No. The distant, large creature is an environmental sight, while Odin’s Ravens are smaller gameplay collectibles placed around the realms. A 2018 Helheim location guide by Game of Guides / SuperSoluce lists six Helheim Odin’s Ravens and their locations: Ravens: Helheim.
#1 Best Overall
- Physical combat over the shoulder free camera brings the action closer than ever combat in God of war is up close frenetic and unflinching. Kratos' Axes powerful, magic and multi faceted is a brutal weapon as well as a versatile tool for exploration
- Midgard and beyond: Set within the untamed forests, mountains, and realms of Norse lore, God of war features a distinctly new setting with its own pantheon of creatures, monsters, and gods
- Vicious, physical combat with an over the shoulder free camera that brings the player closer to the action than ever before

| Giant bird in Helheim | A large creature visible in the environment | Players commonly identify it as Hraesvelgr; the official sources cited here do not confirm that name. |
| Odin’s Ravens | Smaller collectibles placed around the realms | The Game of Guides / SuperSoluce Helheim guide lists six locations. Santa Monica Studio’s designer categorizes Ravens as checklist and milestone activities, not narrative-supported content. |
What the game’s exploration design adds to the mystery
Santa Monica Studio’s Lead Player Investment Designer Anthony DiMento described exploration as one of the game’s three core pillars: “God of War was built around three core pillars that would influence all design decisions for the project: Combat, Father/Son, and Exploration.” He also explained that the team added optional activity beyond the critical path. DiMento’s PlayStation.Blog article places exploration in the game’s design context, but does not identify the giant bird.
DiMento grouped Ravens with Labors and Challenges in a tier of checklist, milestone, and stat-counter activities without narrative support. That is useful context for why a collectible raven should not automatically be treated as a lore-bearing character. It does not, however, explain the giant bird’s identity or role.

What is confirmed about the game
PlayStation describes God of War as a Norse-world adventure starring Kratos and his son Atreus, and identifies a PS4 version on its God of War game page. Those details establish the setting and edition relevant to the question; they do not confirm the bird’s name.
The useful distinction is between what players infer from Norse mythology and what the game or its creators explicitly establish. Hraesvelgr is a compelling interpretation of the Helheim creature, while the smaller Odin’s Ravens are identifiable collectibles with listed locations. The giant bird’s precise identity remains unconfirmed by the official sources cited here.
