Peio Canales is an Athletic Club midfielder whose game spans the number 8 and number 10 roles. After developing at Lezama and making his first-team debut against Sevilla in September 2024, he spent the 2025/26 season on loan at Racing Santander, where Athletic’s record credits him with 33 league appearances and five goals.
What position does Peio Canales play?
Athletic Club lists Canales as a midfielder and describes him as capable of playing as either a number 8 or a number 10. The club says he can take responsibility for directing play; its 2025 loan announcement and Racing’s signing notice describe him more specifically as an attacking or offensive midfielder. These labels point to a central player who can link play from midfield and operate further forward, rather than to one fixed position in every formation. Athletic Club’s player profile and its loan announcement provide the club’s descriptions.
How does Canales play?
The available descriptions suggest a mobile, two-way attacking midfielder, but his exact duties depend on the team’s shape and teammates’ movement. In its 16 April 2026 account of his Racing season, AS described him attacking space when Iñigo Vicente and Andrés Martín moved in from the wings. Without the ball, Canales positioned himself alongside the midfield in a 4-5-1 shape. That account supports a picture of a player involved in both possession and defensive work; it should not be read as a description of every match or system.
Canales has named creative midfielders among his influences. He cited Andrés Iniesta, Isco and Pedri, along with Athletic figures Iker Muniain and Oihan Sancet.

What did Canales achieve on loan at Racing Santander?
Athletic announced a season-long loan to Racing Santander for 2025/26 on 15 August 2025. The club’s announcement specified that the loan had no purchase option and that Canales would return to Bilbao at the end of the season. Athletic’s official season record lists 33 league appearances and five goals for Racing in 2025/26.
AS’s 16 April 2026 report gave a dated figure of five goals and eight assists during the Racing campaign. Athletic’s season table does not list assists, so that contribution figure belongs to AS’s report rather than to the club’s official season totals.
