Nathan Drake is the charismatic, risk-taking treasure hunter at the center of Naughty Dog’s Uncharted games. Actor Nolan North gives him the quick wit and conversational ease that make Drake fun to follow, while the performance also carries the danger, history, and vulnerability beneath his carefree manner.
Who is Nathan Drake?
PlayStation describes Drake as a “roguish explorer” drawn to “adventure, fortune and glory.” That appetite makes him a celebrated adventurer, but it also repeatedly puts him in danger. His easygoing persona masks a complicated past and a harder question: what is he willing to sacrifice to find happiness? PlayStation’s official Uncharted profile presents both sides of the character.
The series sends Drake after historical clues and legendary treasures. In Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, the search begins with a clue tied to Sir Francis Drake and leads toward El Dorado. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves follows the trail of Marco Polo’s lost fleet and Shambhala; Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception takes Drake and his mentor Victor “Sully” Sullivan into a desert search. How does Drake change over the series?
Drake’s defining tension is between the excitement of the next discovery and the security of a settled life. That tension becomes especially clear in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. By then, he has retired from global exploration and built an ordinary life with Elena. His brother Sam’s return draws him back toward treasure hunting.

Naughty Dog writer Josh Scherr describes Drake as learned and knowledgeable about history, but also restless: an adrenaline-seeker looking for the next big thing. The later story puts that restlessness in direct conflict with domestic stability, rather than treating adventure as an uncomplicated appetite. The studio’s five-year retrospective on Uncharted 4 discusses the character and the story’s focus.
What Nolan North brings to the character
North’s performance makes Drake sound less like a scripted action hero and more like someone reacting in the moment. His conversational rhythm and comic timing give the character’s jokes a sense of spontaneity. That levity does not erase the danger around him; it gives the audience a way into a character who can move from banter to fear, determination, or emotional vulnerability.
The performance is not just dialogue laid over animation. Naughty Dog describes a production process in which actors performed movement and dialogue together, with motion-capture data later refined by animators and artists. The studio developed simultaneous capture of motion and dialogue for the series, and Uncharted 4 added facial capture. In practice, Drake’s characterization can come through in timing, posture, physical reactions, facial expression, and words working together. North has emphasized the importance of the writing and the story structure behind his performance. In a PlayStation.Blog interview, he said, “Amy writes a great script. It’s like a strong tree, and we just branch from it.” He also cautioned that too much ad-libbing without a strong structure “becomes a mess.” His comments describe a performance shaped through collaboration with the writers and production team, rather than a character built primarily from improvisation. Naughty Dog’s 2026 anniversary article says North “captured the essence of Nate from the very start of the series and continued to outdo himself with every entry through Uncharted 4.” That is the studio’s assessment of the actor’s contribution. Its significance is clear in the result: Drake’s humor remains recognizable as his life and relationships change, while the performance makes room for the more serious stakes of the later story.
