He was appointed Prime Minister’s AI Opportunities Adviser in January 2025; his stated plan to leave that post and a later report about a move to Anthropic mean his roles should be read with their dates and sources in mind.

What did the AI adviser role involve?
The Prime Minister’s Office and Department for Science, Innovation and Technology announced Clifford’s appointment on 13 January 2025. The adviser role was unpaid. Its remit included advising ministers and supporting implementation of the plan, including work on AI adoption, talent and the UK’s sovereign AI capability. The announcement said he would report directly to the Prime Minister and the DSIT Secretary of State, working with DSIT’s AI Opportunities Unit. See the appointment announcement.
When did Clifford leave the adviser post?
The dates depend on which record is being described. A DSIT declaration published on 24 February 2025 listed the adviser appointment as running from 13 January 2025 to 12 January 2026. Later in 2025, Clifford said he intended to step back from the post at the end of July for personal reasons, while keeping his Entrepreneur First and ARIA chair positions. The declared end date and his later statement about his intended departure are distinct records; neither should be presented as proof of a current role without a more recent official update. What is known about his later work?
A Guardian report dated 2 September 2026 said Clifford had joined Anthropic. That employment move is reported by the newspaper; the sources available here do not include a primary announcement from Anthropic confirming it. Read the Guardian report.
