Dan Houser is a writer and video game executive who co-founded Rockstar Games and helped shape its Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption franchises. Take-Two identified him as Rockstar’s Vice President, Creative when it announced his departure; reporting describes him as lead writer on GTA titles from Grand Theft Auto III onward and on both Red Dead Redemption games. After leaving Rockstar in 2020, he founded Absurd Ventures, which develops stories across games, audio, books and comics.

Who is Dan Houser?

Dan Houser is a British writer and creative executive best known for co-founding Rockstar Games with his brother Sam Houser and for his work on the studio’s major narrative franchises. His influence is most clearly associated with Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption, games known for large open worlds and character-driven stories.

Take-Two Interactive’s February 2020 filing identified Houser as Rockstar’s Vice President, Creative. The Guardian describes him as a Rockstar co-founder and lead writer on GTA titles from Grand Theft Auto III onward, as well as both Red Dead Redemption games. These franchise-level descriptions are more reliable than treating commonly repeated online lists as a complete, title-by-title credit record.

What games did Dan Houser work on?

The clearest published account of Houser’s game work is at the franchise level. The Guardian credits him as lead writer on GTA titles beginning with Grand Theft Auto III and on both Red Dead Redemption adventures. In a 2025 interview with Lex Fridman, Houser also singled out Grand Theft Auto IV, Grand Theft Auto V, both Red Dead Redemption games and their additional packs, and Max Payne 3 as part of an especially exciting period of writing.

That does not establish every individual game credit or role. Without checking the original credits for each release, it is more accurate to describe these as the franchises and projects associated with his work than to present a definitive gameography.

Why did Dan Houser leave Rockstar?

Take-Two’s February 4, 2020 filing said Houser would leave Rockstar after an extended break that began in spring 2019; it recorded March 11, 2020 as his last day. In a later Guardian interview, Houser said Rockstar had been his life for about 21 years and described full production on projects from beginning to end for two decades as intense. He said it was probably the right time to try other things. That is his explanation of the timing, not evidence of one definitive cause.

Houser has described different periods of his Rockstar career as creatively significant. In the 2025 Lex Fridman interview, he recalled 2001–2005 as an especially exciting stretch for early creative and business experimentation, and separately highlighted the writing period spanning GTA IV and V, the two Red Dead games, their additional packs and Max Payne 3.

What is Dan Houser doing now?

After Rockstar, Houser founded Absurd Ventures, a company focused on developing stories across multiple media. Its projects extend beyond games, with the status below reflecting reporting available by December 2025 rather than a guarantee of future release dates.

Project or story world Medium and Houser’s documented role Status reported
A Better Paradise Story world introduced as a 12-part audio fiction series; Houser adapted it into a novel. A Better Paradise Volume One: An Aftermath was identified as his debut novel in a Publishers Weekly interview published March 11, 2025. In that interview, Houser said a game set in the universe was in development and would take several more years. The Guardian also reported the game was in development in December 2025.
American Caper Comic series co-written with former Rockstar collaborator Lazlow. The Guardian reported in December 2025 that Houser was considering a story game in the setting; that is a reported concept, not a confirmed release plan.
Another action-comedy world Story world and game concept at Absurd Ventures; further details are not established here. The Guardian described the concept in December 2025. No release date is established.

Houser also discussed unrealized Rockstar projects in his 2025 Lex Fridman interview. GameSpot’s recap says an unfinished Grand Theft Auto V expansion featuring Trevor as a secret agent was abandoned when it was about half done; it also reports that Agent and a medieval-themed Rockstar game did not reach release. These are accounts of canceled or unrealized development, not released games in Houser’s catalog.

Did Dan Houser write GTA VI?

The sources cited here do not establish that Houser wrote Grand Theft Auto VI. Take-Two’s confirmed departure date for him is March 11, 2020, but that fact alone does not prove who received a credit on a particular game. The December 2023 Take-Two announcement said GTA VI was then planned for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2025; it is a dated announcement, not current release information.

That same December 2023 announcement reported that Grand Theft Auto V had sold more than 190 million units and the Red Dead Redemption franchise more than 81 million units worldwide at that point. Those are publisher figures from 2023, not current sales totals.
