Nick Holonyak Jr. is generally credited with inventing the first practical visible LED, which he demonstrated at General Electric in 1962. But the story began earlier: Henry J. Round reported light from a semiconductor in 1907, and Oleg V. Losev investigated the effect in the 1920s and 1930s. Those are different milestones, not competing claims to the same invention.
Who invented the practical LED?
For the first practical visible-light LED, the answer is Nick Holonyak Jr. IEEE Photonics Society says Holonyak, then a consulting scientist at General Electric’s Syracuse laboratory, demonstrated the device in 1962. It emitted red light and used a gallium arsenide phosphide alloy. IEEE Photonics Society and the U.S. Department of Energy identify this as a key milestone in LED history.
Holonyak is often called the “father of the LED” because his work turned semiconductor light emission into a practical visible device. That title is a shorthand: it does not mean he was the first person to observe the phenomenon or the only person who contributed to LED technology.
How Round, Losev, and Holonyak fit into LED history
| Figure | Date | Milestone |
|---|---|---|
| Henry J. Round | 1907 | Published the first reported observation of light being emitted from a semiconductor, according to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. |
| Oleg V. Losev | 1920s–1930s | Carried out closer studies of semiconductor light emission, according to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. |
| Nick Holonyak Jr. | 1962 | Demonstrated the first practical visible LED, a red device made with gallium arsenide phosphide, according to IEEE Photonics Society. |
| Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano, and Shuji Nakamura | Later work; recognized in 2014 | Made efficient blue LEDs possible, a breakthrough recognized with the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics. Blue LEDs enabled efficient white LED lighting. Nobel Prize educational material and the Nobel Prize describe this contribution. |
Why do sources name different LED inventors?
They may be using “invented” to mean different things. Round’s 1907 report is the earliest known observation in this timeline; Losev’s work was an early scientific investigation; Holonyak’s 1962 achievement was a practical visible device. Naming one person without specifying the milestone can make a complicated history sound like a single event.

How an LED produces light
An LED, or light-emitting diode, produces light in a semiconductor junction. When electrons and holes recombine in the active region, they release energy as photons. The semiconductor material determines the photons’ wavelength and therefore the light’s color. Nobel Prize educational material explains this process.
Blue light requires a semiconductor capable of producing shorter-wavelength, higher-energy photons. Efficient blue LEDs arrived later than Holonyak’s red device; combining blue LED technology with other materials made efficient white LED lighting possible. That is why the invention of a red practical LED and the development of efficient blue LEDs are related but distinct achievements.
