There is no single uncontested inventor of radio. Aleksandr Popov demonstrated a device for detecting radio waves in 1895; Guglielmo Marconi developed wireless telegraphy into a practical communications system and filed a British patent application for it in 1896. Which man gets the title depends on what “invented radio” means.

What did Popov demonstrate in 1895?

On 7 May 1895, Popov presented and demonstrated a coherer-based apparatus in St. Petersburg. It was designed to detect atmospheric electrical disturbances, such as lightning. A coherer—a tube containing metal filings—changes conductivity when affected by an electrical impulse. Popov connected the component to a relay and signaling apparatus so the device could register disturbances.

This was an important radio-wave detection milestone, but detecting a signal is not the same as transmitting intelligible messages between stations. Popov built on earlier work, including Édouard Branly’s coherer and Oliver Lodge’s experiments. The U.S. government-hosted historical timeline also records Popov’s public demonstration on 7 May 1895 (historical timeline).

Did Popov send a Morse message in 1896?

A frequently repeated claim says Popov transmitted the words “Heinrich Hertz” in Morse code between buildings on 24 March 1896. The evidence for that event is less secure than the record of his May 1895 detector demonstration. IEEE Spectrum reports that there is no official record of the March demonstration, so it should not be treated as an established fact (IEEE Spectrum’s account of Popov).

Popov’s 1895 apparatus and the disputed 1896 message claim are therefore different kinds of evidence. The first supports his role in demonstrating radio-wave detection; it does not, by itself, establish that he had already demonstrated a complete, practical wireless telegraphy system.

What did Marconi do in 1895 and 1896?

Marconi conducted wireless experiments in Italy in 1895, according to the U.S. government-hosted timeline. He then took his apparatus to England and filed a British patent application on 2 June 1896. The Nobel biography describes the patent as one for wireless telegraphy; it was a claim concerning a wireless communications system, not proof that Marconi was the first person to detect radio waves (Nobel biography of Marconi).

Marconi pursued commercial development, and his work became closely associated with practical wireless telegraphy: sending messages without wires. His patent and commercial success helped make him the figure most commonly credited outside Russia with developing radio communication. That recognition reflects a particular milestone—building and advancing a working communications system—not sole authorship of every discovery that made radio possible.

How do the two milestones compare?

Question Aleksandr Popov Guglielmo Marconi
Key early milestone Demonstrated a coherer-based detector of atmospheric electrical disturbances on 7 May 1895. Conducted wireless experiments in Italy in 1895, according to the U.S. government-hosted timeline.
Intelligible wireless communication The claimed 24 March 1896 Morse demonstration is not securely documented; IEEE Spectrum reports no official record. Developed wireless telegraphy, with a British patent application filed on 2 June 1896.
Patent and commercial development According to IEEE Spectrum, Popov did not pursue a patent for his lightning detector. Filed the British patent application and pursued commercial development.
Public recognition Celebrated as an early radio pioneer in the Soviet Union and Russia; 7 May became Radio Day there. Widely recognized outside Russia as the inventor of radio, in part because of his patenting and commercial work.

Sources for the milestones and recognition include IEEE Spectrum, the U.S. government-hosted timeline, and the Nobel biography. The comparison is about distinct milestones, not a single contest with one universally accepted starting line.

Why is there no universally accepted one-person answer?

“Inventing radio” can mean discovering or detecting electromagnetic waves, transmitting them wirelessly, communicating intelligible messages, or creating a reliable system that people could use. Those developments did not arrive as one indivisible invention. The National Security Agency’s historical account notes that “no one inventor or invention was responsible for radio” (NSA history of radio).

Marconi’s practical wireless telegraphy depended on earlier science and components. Heinrich Hertz’s experiments established key properties of electromagnetic waves; Branly and Lodge contributed to coherer technology. Popov, Marconi, and other contemporaries—including Nikola Tesla and Jagadish Bose—also belong in the wider history. The Museo Marconi’s account discusses these precursors and contemporaries (Museo Marconi on radio’s invention).

Who should you say invented radio?

  • If you mean an early public demonstration of radio-wave detection: Popov’s 7 May 1895 detector demonstration is the well-supported milestone.
  • If you mean practical wireless telegraphy and its commercial development: Marconi is commonly credited, with his 1896 British patent application marking an important step.
  • If you mean one person responsible for radio as a whole: Neither name alone captures the cumulative work of the scientists and inventors who made it possible.
