Anyone who finds your Google Search profile through Search or Discover may be able to see its name, bio, linked social accounts, and content from those accounts. But “Google profile” can also mean the profile attached to public Maps or Search contributions, or personal details in your Google Account. Those are separate surfaces with different visibility controls; changing one setting does not make everything else private.
First, identify which Google profile you mean
Google has several profile-related features. Before changing a setting, identify where the information appears and what you want to hide.

Who can see a Google Search profile?
Google says people may find Search profile information when they search for a person’s name. A profile can also be opened from the header above a creator’s content in Discover. Google may incorporate the profile’s name, bio, and social links into a knowledge panel. A common name can make a profile harder to surface.

If you connect a new social account, its content may take 24–48 hours to appear; Google describes this as an estimate, not a guaranteed deadline. Google’s documentation does not establish a universal public/private switch for every Search profile field. Do not assume that making a Google Account detail private will also hide the Search profile or content associated with a linked platform.
Managing a Search profile
- Google says name and bio changes require review, so they may not appear immediately.
- Removing or reordering linked platforms is reflected immediately in the profile, according to Google’s help page. This changes what is shown there, not necessarily what is available on the linked platform itself.
- An eligible brand or identity can have up to 10 Search profiles managed from one Google Account. Google also allows up to 8 posts to be pinned to a profile.
- Search profile Insights are visible only to the Google Account that claimed the profile.
These limits and timing details are from Google Search Help documentation accessed in 2026; they are product guidance, not guarantees about how quickly every Search result will update.

What can people see on a public-contributions profile?
Google’s documented public profile view can show your picture and name, posts, post count, and likes on posts. A private profile shows your picture and name, number of posts, and total likes, but other people will not see the posts on that profile page.

Google Search Help warns: “Even with a private profile, your posts may still appear in search results.” Google also says your name and picture may appear in results if they are associated with public posts or comments. In other words, a profile setting can change what someone sees on the profile page without removing the public contribution that Search may surface.

Change the contribution-profile privacy setting
- Open profile.google.com.
- Select your profile icon, then choose Profile options.
- Toggle Profile privacy to the setting you want.
- Review your existing posts and comments separately, especially anything tied to a public contribution.
Menu wording can vary by device or product version. Google notes that the profile picture and name may come from your Google Account; editing them can affect Gmail and other Google services. In some cases, public-contribution names and pictures can be customized and may appear with public Maps and Search contributions. See Google’s help for profiles, Search, the app, and Discover.

Google Account “About me” settings control personal details separately, field by field. Examples include your birthday, gender, employment information, personal and work contact information, places lived, and education. Depending on the field, available audiences include Private (only you), Anyone, people you interact with, your organization, or family.

Information set to Anyone may appear in Google services where people contact others or create content, including Chat, Gmail, Maps, Play, and YouTube. Google also says information that might be shown to people you contact or share with can include your name, nickname, profile picture, cover photo, and Google Account email. That is conditional visibility, not a claim that every field is visible to everyone. Review Google’s guidance on choosing what others see.
What Profile Discovery does
Profile Discovery concerns whether people who have your phone number or email can find you within Google products and services. If they have your contact information but have not interacted with you, you can choose whether they see your full or shortened name and profile picture. After you interact, Google says they can typically see your full name and picture. Profile Discovery is not available to EDU users, according to Google’s help for Profile Discovery.

This is not the same as making a Search profile private, and it does not mean that anyone who knows your phone number can see all your Google Account details. It addresses discovery and the name and picture shown in that context.

How to check what other people may find
- Search for your name and handle. Google recommends searching your name to find a Search profile; try a social handle if the name search does not surface it. Search results and knowledge panels can take time to reflect changes.
- Inspect the Search profile. Check the name, bio, and linked content platforms. Remove a platform if you no longer want its content shown on the profile. Name and bio edits require review.
- Check the public-contributions profile separately. Open Profile options to review its privacy setting, then inspect existing posts and comments. A private setting does not ensure that public contributions vanish from Search.
- Review About me audiences. In Google Account settings, open People & sharing / Choose what others see / About me, then check the audience for each field. Exact paths may vary by platform.
- Review Profile Discovery. Check whether people with your phone number or email can discover your profile and whether they see your full or shortened name and picture.
- Use a profile preview where available. Google documents a View profile as box for checking how a profile appears to another person. Because Google has multiple profile systems, also inspect the relevant profile and field audiences directly.
