Pick: White Sox to win Game 1, as a contrarian, form-based lean. Chicago won seven of 13 regular-season meetings with Cleveland and swept Houston in the Wild Card Series. But the Guardians are at home, finished a game ahead in the standings, and have the stronger Game 1 starting-pitcher numbers against Chicago. The odds snapshots available for this matchup also favor Cleveland, so this is a close call—not a confident forecast.
White Sox vs. Guardians Game 1 prediction
Chicago’s case rests on recent momentum and familiarity: the White Sox swept Houston to reach the ALDS, then finished the regular-season series against Cleveland with a 7-6 edge. That is enough to make a Chicago upset worth considering, especially in a matchup whose regular-season games were often close.
The counterargument is substantial. Cleveland finished 85-77 to Chicago’s 84-78, earned the AL Central title and home field for Game 1, and starts Parker Messick. In four starts against the White Sox this season, Messick posted a 2.81 ERA with 29 strikeouts and five walks over 25 2/3 innings. Those results favor Cleveland’s starting-pitcher case.

Chicago’s path likely depends on turning the game over to its bullpen without falling behind. Rookie left-hander Hagen Smith threw three scoreless innings in his Wild Card start, but MLB’s matchup preview suggests he may be limited to three or four efficient innings. That makes the White Sox’ relief plan—and how well it holds up against Cleveland’s lineup—central to the pick.

What are the White Sox vs. Guardians odds?
Prices varied between the cited sportsbook previews, and betting odds can move. FanDuel Research listed its figures as updated at 11:11 a.m. on October 3, 2026; BetMGM published a separate October 3 preview. These are time-specific snapshots, not guaranteed current prices.
| Source and timing | Chicago moneyline | Cleveland moneyline | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| FanDuel Research, updated 11:11 a.m. October 3, 2026 | +128 | -152 | 6.5 runs: over -134, under +110 |
| BetMGM, October 3, 2026 preview | +125 | -150 | 7 runs |
Both snapshots make Cleveland the moneyline favorite, which is why the Chicago pick is contrarian. FanDuel Research also reported a 55.9% Guardians win prediction attributed to numberFire; that is a model estimate, not a guarantee or a sportsbook price. BetMGM’s preview separately listed Cleveland to win the ALDS at -140 and mentioned +110 for Cleveland to win Game 1 and the series.

Who is starting Game 1?
White Sox: Hagen Smith
Chicago is listed with rookie left-hander Hagen Smith, making his second start of the week. He delivered three scoreless innings in the Wild Card Series. MLB’s matchup FAQ suggests three or four efficient innings may be his likely limit. The White Sox used an opener 31 times during the regular season, the most in MLB, so a short start would not be unfamiliar territory—but it puts added pressure on the bullpen.

Guardians: Parker Messick
Messick went 2.56 ERA over 186 1/3 innings in 32 starts during the 2026 regular season, with 193 strikeouts and 49 walks. His results against Chicago were also strong: a 2.81 ERA, 29 strikeouts, and five walks across 25 2/3 innings in four starts. Those numbers do not determine what happens in Game 1, but they give Cleveland a clear matchup advantage on the mound.

What could decide the game?
Chicago’s season-series edge was narrow
The White Sox won the season series 7-6 and outscored Cleveland 58-57. Eleven of the 13 games were decided by three runs or fewer, seven by one run, and MLB’s matchup feature counted four walk-offs. The history points to a familiar, competitive matchup—not a guarantee that Chicago will repeat its edge.
Chicago needs enough from its bullpen
If Smith’s outing ends after a few innings, Chicago will need its relievers to cover substantial ground. MLB identified Grant Taylor and other young arms as part of the available relief picture. Cleveland’s Cade Smith gives the home team a proven late-inning option: MLB reported a 1.95 ERA in 69 appearances and 41 saves in 2026, tied for the MLB lead.

The lineups offer different matchup cues
Chicago’s official Game 1 lineup has several right-handed hitters against Messick: Chase Meidroth, Randal Grichuk, Miguel Vargas, Munetaka Murakami, Tommy Pham, Brenton Doyle, Kyle Teel, Braden Montgomery, and Colson Montgomery. MLB noted that Grichuk starts in left with Messick pitching. Cleveland’s listed lineup is Steven Kwan, José Ramírez, Chase DeLauter, Jo Adell, Angel Martínez, David Fry, Travis Bazzana, Austin Hedges, and Brayan Rocchio.
Availability can affect the relief picture
MLB reported that Cleveland reliever Colin Holderman would miss the postseason after a wrist issue. Rhys Hoskins, who ended the regular season on the injured list, was working out and remained a possible roster consideration. Chicago had no injuries to report in that MLB update. Availability and active rosters can change, so these details describe the reported status rather than a guarantee of Game 1 availability.

Why the pick is Chicago, despite the Cleveland lean
The White Sox offer the more appealing upset case: they arrive after a Wild Card sweep and edged Cleveland in the regular-season series. Still, Cleveland’s home field, Messick’s season and head-to-head results, and the Guardians-favoring odds all argue against treating Chicago as the safer side. The pick is Chicago to stay hot, with the expectation that its bullpen can bridge the innings after Smith—not a claim that the matchup or market favors the White Sox.
