For watching TV without a cable across the room, start by checking your TV’s audio outputs and then compare dedicated headphone-and-transmitter kits with Bluetooth headphones. A dedicated transmitter is designed for TV listening and can reduce lip-sync risk, while Bluetooth compatibility and delay depend on the particular TV, headphones, and supported codec. The right choice also depends on fit, dialogue controls, battery life, and whether another person needs to hear the TV speakers.
Choose a connection that works with your TV
Look at the TV’s audio outputs and its sound settings before choosing headphones. Dedicated TV systems commonly connect through an optical or 3.5 mm analog output. Some newer systems also discuss HDMI connections where supported. Check the headphone kit’s included cables and the TV manual; having a port is not always enough if the TV’s output settings or speaker behavior do not match what you need.
- Optical: A common digital connection for a TV transmitter. For the RS 5200, Sennheiser specifies optical PCM support.
- 3.5 mm analog: A straightforward option when the TV has a headphone or analog audio output.
- RCA: Some systems include an adapter for TVs with analog RCA audio output.
- HDMI: Relevant only if the specific TV and headphone system support the required connection.
Sennheiser’s RS 275 product page notes that some TVs may not support sending audio to headphones while keeping the built-in speakers on. Check this in the TV manual if someone else will listen through the speakers.
Dedicated transmitter or Bluetooth?
Dedicated TV headphone systems
These pair headphones with a base or transmitter connected to the TV. They are made for TV use, and the dedicated link is intended to avoid or reduce the lip-sync problems that can occur with Bluetooth. That does not guarantee perfect synchronization in every setup. Connection type and TV settings still matter.

Bluetooth headphones
Bluetooth can be convenient if your TV supports it, and compatible codecs can make it a viable option. But audio delay, range, and bandwidth vary with the particular TV and headphones. RTINGS warns that Bluetooth headphones can have high audio lag; Crutchfield likewise cautions that performance varies by device. If visible speech delay would be distracting, do not assume an arbitrary Bluetooth pairing will stay in sync.
Sennheiser describes the RS 275 as providing audio “without lag,” but that is the manufacturer’s claim, not an independent test result. Treat it as a feature claim rather than a guarantee for every TV and setup.

Check shared listening before buying
If one person will use headphones while another listens through the TV, verify that the television can output to both at once. Sennheiser says the RS 275/255 support Auracast broadcast and describes shared listening with independent volume controls, but simultaneous TV-speaker output depends on the TV. For multiple headphone listeners, confirm that the headphones and transmitter or broadcast setup are compatible with the number of listeners you have in mind.

- Identify the TV’s output: Check the rear or side ports and the audio section of the TV manual for optical, 3.5 mm, RCA, or supported HDMI output.
- Check simultaneous output: If another person needs the speakers, look for a setting or manual entry confirming that the TV can keep speakers active while sending audio to headphones.
- Match the system to the port: Confirm the transmitter includes the right cable or adapter. For optical connections, check the TV’s digital audio format and the headphone system’s supported format.
- Choose the wearing style: Compare over-ear headphones with stethoscope-style earphones, including any separate ear-volume or balance controls you need.
- Pair and test before settling in: Follow the TV and headphone instructions, then test speech synchronization, dialogue clarity, and speaker behavior at your normal listening volume.
What to verify before ordering
- The specific TV’s audio outputs and whether it can send audio to both headphones and speakers.
- The exact cable, adapter, and transmitter included in the model’s bundle.
- Whether app-dependent controls are important to you and which features require the app.
- Whether the manufacturer’s stated runtime and range fit your needs; they are specifications, not guaranteed results in your room.
- Current model availability and bundle contents, which can change.
