On a Windows 11 dual-screen laptop, start with Best power efficiency, Energy saver, shorter on-battery screen and sleep timeouts, and lower—but still comfortable—brightness on both panels. If your laptop exposes refresh-rate controls, choose a lower supported rate or try Dynamic Refresh Rate. These settings can reduce power use, but the benefit depends on the laptop and what you do; no specific extra battery time can be promised.
Start with the power settings that apply across the laptop
Choose Best power efficiency on battery
Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode and choose Best power efficiency while running on battery. Windows offers this, Balanced, and Best performance on supported configurations. The efficient mode limits background activity to reduce consumption; if a demanding task becomes too slow, switch to Balanced. Availability and labels can vary with the Windows version and device. Microsoft’s battery-saving tips and power-mode guidance describe these controls.
Turn on Energy saver
Go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Energy saver. You can turn it on when needed or set it to activate automatically at a battery threshold. If Windows shows an option to lower screen brightness while Energy saver is active, enable it if the resulting brightness remains comfortable. Energy saver can dim the display and restrict background processes, so some background activity may be delayed.

In Power & battery > Screen, sleep & hibernate timeouts (called Screen and sleep in some builds), shorten the on-battery screen-off and sleep intervals. Choose times that fit your routine: the screen-off timer saves power when you step away, while sleep ends active use and can interrupt work if the laptop sleeps while you are reading or thinking.

Reduce power used by the two displays
Lower brightness on each panel
Open Settings > System > Display > Brightness and reduce brightness to a readable level. If Windows exposes separate controls for both built-in displays, adjust each one; some laptops do not offer the same controls for both panels. Content-adaptive brightness can also reduce power on supported devices, but automatic brightness changes may be distracting or unsuitable for color-sensitive work. External displays do not necessarily expose the same built-in display controls. See Microsoft’s display brightness and color guidance.
Choose a lower supported refresh rate
Go to Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, select a display, and choose a lower rate from the options Windows lists. Repeat for the other panel if it has its own selectable setting. A lower refresh rate can use less display power, but motion will look less smooth. Microsoft notes that a higher refresh rate provides smoother motion while using more power: refresh-rate settings in Windows.

Try Dynamic Refresh Rate if it appears
Some compatible Windows 11 hardware offers Dynamic Refresh Rate, which can adjust refresh automatically. Try it for browsing and office work if the option is available. If it interferes with a game or another task that benefits from high refresh, turn it off or select the desired supported rate instead. The option is hardware-dependent, so its absence does not indicate a problem.
Use one screen when you do not need both
Press Windows key + P to see Windows’ general display modes: PC screen only, Duplicate, Extend, and Second screen only. Choose a one-screen mode only if the display you want is listed and the laptop behaves as expected. These modes are not a guarantee that Windows can independently switch off either built-in panel on every dual-screen laptop. Limit power use from apps and optional features
Set graphics-heavy apps to Power saving
Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics. For an app supported by the graphics preference control, open its options and choose Power saving. This can reduce graphics power use, but may lower performance in demanding apps.
Review background battery use
Go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage. Look for apps using substantial power in the background and restrict their background activity where Windows provides that control. Avoid limiting an app if you rely on it for timely notifications or other background work.

Consider dark mode on an OLED screen
Under Settings > Personalization > Colors > Choose your mode, select a dark mode if you prefer it. Microsoft identifies the potential power benefit particularly for OLED displays; do not expect the same effect on every panel type.

Use Quick Settings to switch off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth when you do not need them. Leave them enabled if you need a network connection or connected accessories; disabling a radio is useful only when it is genuinely unused.

Balance battery savings against usability
Make changes in a practical order: select an efficient power mode, configure Energy saver and idle timeouts, then tune brightness and refresh rate on whichever displays Windows exposes. Review graphics and background settings only for apps where their performance or notification trade-offs are acceptable. The most visible compromises are dimmer screens, less-smooth motion, interrupted idle sessions, and slower or delayed background work.
Windows’ energy recommendations may suggest screen-off or sleep intervals such as three or ten minutes, depending on the system. Those are example settings, not measured battery-life results. The actual gain from any configuration varies by device, display technology, workload, and hardware support; the cited Microsoft guidance does not establish a universal runtime increase or percentage saving.
