There is no single “slow laptop” switch in Visual Studio Code. The most reliable improvements come from stopping VS Code from searching or analyzing folders your project does not need. Choose the setting by the action that lags: use files.exclude for slow folder opening and project-file discovery, jsconfig.json exclusions for JavaScript or TypeScript IntelliSense, and search.exclude for oversized search trees. Disable the minimap only if you want a simpler display; the documentation does not establish it as a performance fix.

Make exclusions narrow and put them in the workspace when they apply to one project. A workspace rule can override a user rule where the setting supports both scopes, so you do not accidentally hide files in every project.

Start with the symptom, not a list of random tweaks

VS Code performs different work when it opens a folder, searches text, builds a JavaScript project model, activates extensions, or redraws the editor. A setting that changes one operation may do nothing for another. Use this symptom map before editing anything.

What feels slow Setting or file to investigate What it changes Important limit
Opening a folder with many files files.exclude in workspace settings Keeps selected folders out of the search for typical project files that VS Code performs while opening a folder. It is not a universal reduction of every background task; narrow patterns to folders you do not need for that project.
JavaScript or TypeScript IntelliSense exclude in jsconfig.json (or the equivalent project configuration used by your codebase) Removes dependency and generated folders from the language-service project model. Do not exclude source directories whose symbols you expect IntelliSense to understand.
Searching a very large tree search.exclude, and sometimes files.exclude Controls which paths text search or general file discovery considers. These settings affect different features; excluding a path from search does not automatically configure JavaScript/TypeScript analysis.
Startup or UI commands Extension investigation Helps identify an extension whose activation or command handling is expensive. There is no documented universal setting that fixes a problematic extension.
Visual clutter or a busy editor editor.minimap.enabled Removes the minimap from the editor surface. The official documentation describes this as a display option, not a measured speed improvement.

The settings editor and the JSON editor expose the same configuration system. The official documentation explains user and workspace scopes at User and workspace settings.

Understand user settings versus workspace settings

User settings apply to the VS Code instances you open as that user, so they are appropriate for a preference you want in every project. Workspace settings belong to one project and are the safer place for exclusions tied to that repository. Where a setting allows both scopes, the workspace value takes precedence over the user value.

Open the graphical Settings editor

  1. Open the Command Palette with Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows or Linux, or Cmd+Shift+P on macOS.
  2. Run Preferences: Open Settings (UI).
  3. Search for the setting name, such as files.exclude, search.exclude, or editor.minimap.enabled.
  4. Use the scope selector in the Settings editor to choose User or Workspace before changing the value.

Open the JSON files directly

From the Command Palette, choose Preferences: Open User Settings (JSON) for global settings or Preferences: Open Workspace Settings (JSON) for the current project. JSON is useful when you need a glob pattern or want to review several related exclusions together. Keep a copy of the original value before making a broad change so you can restore it quickly.

Fix slow folder opening with a targeted files.exclude rule

When opening a folder containing many files makes VS Code unresponsive, the official FAQ attributes the delay and CPU use to searches for typical project files. Its documented remedy is to keep irrelevant directories out of that search with files.exclude; see the Visual Studio Code FAQ.

Apply the rule only to the affected workspace

  1. Open the project folder in VS Code.
  2. Run Preferences: Open Workspace Settings (JSON).
  3. Add a narrow pattern for a large generated or irrelevant directory:
{
  "files.exclude": {
    "**/largeGeneratedOrIrrelevantFolder": true
  }
}
  1. Save the file and reopen the folder, or repeat the operation that was slow.
  2. Check that files you still need for navigation and project work remain visible. If the rule hides something important, narrow the glob or remove the rule.

Replace the example path with a real directory in your repository. Do not hide an entire source tree merely because it is large: the setting is intended for folders that are not needed by the relevant project-file discovery operation. The FAQ does not claim that files.exclude eliminates all indexing, watching, search, or extension work.

What this setting does not do

files.exclude is not a blanket “low-power mode.” It addresses the documented project-file search involved in opening large folders. A directory excluded here may also be less visible in the Explorer, so treat the pattern as a project decision rather than a cosmetic tweak. If opening the folder improves but typing remains sluggish, move to the language-service or extension checks below.

Reduce JavaScript and TypeScript IntelliSense work with jsconfig.json

For JavaScript and TypeScript projects, IntelliSense builds a project model from the files in scope. The official JavaScript project configuration documentation recommends excluding folders that are not source code, with node_modules and generated dist output as examples.

Create or edit the project configuration

  1. Place jsconfig.json at the project root, or open the existing file that defines the JavaScript project.
  2. Add an exclude array for dependency and generated-output directories:
{
  "compilerOptions": {
    "module": "CommonJS",
    "target": "ES6"
  },
  "exclude": ["node_modules", "dist"]
}
  1. Adapt the paths to your repository. For example, a monorepo may need separate package-level configuration, while a project that uses build rather than dist should name its actual output folder.
  2. Save the file and allow the JavaScript/TypeScript language service to reload. Test completion, diagnostics, and navigation in a source file.

Excluding a directory from this project configuration changes what the language service analyzes; it does not delete files and does not make the directory unavailable to your operating system. Keep source folders and any generated declarations that your code intentionally consumes in scope. If IntelliSense becomes incomplete after the change, remove the offending path from exclude or refine the project boundaries.

Why this is different from files.exclude

jsconfig.json controls JavaScript project analysis. A folder can be visible in the Explorer and still be excluded from IntelliSense. Conversely, hiding a directory with files.exclude does not by itself define the language-service project. Configure each scope deliberately instead of assuming one exclusion covers every VS Code subsystem.

Control large-workspace search with search.exclude

Large dependency trees and build artifacts can make text search expensive even after folder opening is acceptable. The official IntelliSense guidance notes that very large workspaces may have IntelliSense partially disabled for performance and suggests excluding large folders such as node_modules or build output with files.exclude or search.exclude; details are in the IntelliSense documentation.

Exclude only from text search when that is the actual problem

Use Preferences: Open Workspace Settings (JSON) and add a search-specific rule:

{
  "search.exclude": {
    "**/node_modules": true,
    "**/dist": true
  }
}

This keeps those paths out of VS Code’s text-search results while preserving the rest of the workspace. Search exclusions are useful when the editor is responsive until you run a repository-wide search, or when results are dominated by generated files. They do not configure the JavaScript/TypeScript language service; retain a matching jsconfig.json exclusion if IntelliSense is also the issue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose between search.exclude and files.exclude

  • Choose search.exclude when you want to reduce text-search scope but still keep the directory available in the Explorer.
  • Choose files.exclude when the relevant problem is the documented project-file discovery during folder opening, or when you intentionally want the path hidden from normal file views.
  • Use both only when both features need the same narrow exclusion. Review the side effects before committing a workspace setting for a team.

Investigate extensions when startup or commands are slow

Extensions can affect startup and UI operations. VS Code describes extension activation as lazy in its Extension Host documentation, which means an extension may activate when a particular workspace, file type, command, or event requires it. That behavior makes a universal performance setting inappropriate: the extension’s own configuration and activation behavior need investigation.

Use a controlled comparison

  1. Record the exact slow action: startup, opening a workspace, typing, saving, search, or a command.
  2. Temporarily reproduce it with extensions disabled, then compare the same action in the same workspace.
  3. If the problem disappears, re-enable extensions selectively or inspect the suspected extension’s settings and activation triggers.
  4. Keep only the extension-specific change that addresses the observed behavior. Do not disable unrelated extensions permanently without checking what functionality your project needs.

This process identifies a possible extension cause; it does not prove that a particular extension is defective on every laptop. If disabling extensions makes no difference, return to the relevant folder, search, or language-service scope rather than adding unrelated exclusions.

Disable the minimap only as an interface simplification

The minimap is the code overview strip at the side of the editor. To remove it, open Settings and search for Editor: Minimap Enabled, or add:

{
  "editor.minimap.enabled": false
}

The official user-interface documentation documents this as a display choice. It does not provide a benchmark or guarantee that disabling the minimap improves responsiveness. Use it when the minimap distracts you, consumes screen space, or is part of a simpler editor layout—not as a promised fix for CPU, memory, or IntelliSense lag.

Fine-tune exclusions without losing useful files

Exclusions are most effective when they describe the structure of the project rather than the age or size of the laptop. Start by identifying folders that are dependencies, generated output, caches, or vendor content and that are not source code for the task at hand. Typical examples in the official guidance are node_modules and dist; your repository may use different names. A broad pattern such as an entire workspace root can remove files that the editor, search, or language service needs, so prefer a specific directory pattern.

Review each exclusion against the feature you are trying to change. If the complaint is repository-wide text search, begin with search.exclude so the directory remains available for browsing. If the complaint is the project-file search performed while opening a large folder, use a workspace files.exclude rule. If completion and diagnostics are the problem, put the path in the JavaScript project configuration instead. Matching patterns in all three places is appropriate only when all three operations need the same folder removed.

After saving a rule, verify both the benefit and the cost. Open a file that should remain visible, run a search for a known symbol, and test completion and “go to definition” in source code. If one of those checks fails, remove the last pattern or make it narrower. Because workspace values can override user values, inspect both scopes when a setting seems to have no effect; a project-level value may be replacing the global one.

Use a repeatable before-and-after test

Do not change several unrelated settings at once. First write down the workspace, the action, and what “slow” means in practice: a delayed folder opening, a search that takes too long, missing keystroke responses, or late completion suggestions. Repeat that same action after one targeted change. This simple comparison cannot produce a universal benchmark, but it tells you whether the change helped your actual project.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test while the same folders and extensions are present. For folder-opening problems, close and reopen the workspace after changing files.exclude. For IntelliSense, wait for the language service to reload, then check completion, diagnostics, and navigation. For search, run the same query before and after search.exclude and confirm that expected source files still appear. For extension investigation, compare the same command with extensions enabled and disabled.

Keep a short record of each pattern you add and why it exists. That makes it easier to remove a rule when a generated directory becomes an input, a project layout changes, or another developer needs to understand why a folder is absent from results. The goal is less unnecessary work, not the largest possible exclusion list.

A safe troubleshooting sequence

Make one change at a time and test the same action after each change. This gives you a way to undo a setting that hides files or removes symbols you actually need.

  1. Name the slow operation. Separate folder opening, repository search, JavaScript/TypeScript completion, startup, and general editing. If the symptom is vague, time each action informally under the same workspace conditions.
  2. Check the workspace size. Look for dependency, generated-output, cache, and vendor directories that are not source code. Do not exclude a folder merely because its name is unfamiliar.
  3. For slow folder opening, add a narrow workspace files.exclude pattern and retest the open operation. This is the setting tied directly to project-file discovery in the FAQ.
  4. For JavaScript/TypeScript lag, add appropriate dependency and generated-output paths to jsconfig.json‘s exclude array, then retest completion and diagnostics.
  5. For slow repository search, use search.exclude for the oversized directories and confirm that expected source files still appear in results.
  6. For startup or command delays, compare with extensions disabled and investigate extension-specific settings if the comparison points there.
  7. For visual simplification, disable the minimap if you prefer the layout, while treating performance impact as unverified.
  8. Revert changes that break navigation or analysis. Remove one pattern at a time and test again. Exclusions should reduce unnecessary work without concealing files or symbols required by your workflow.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Applying a global exclusion to every project

A user-level glob can affect unrelated repositories. Put project-specific dependency and build paths in workspace settings or the project’s JavaScript configuration. Reserve user settings for exclusions that are genuinely valid across your workspaces.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using one setting as if it controlled every feature

files.exclude, search.exclude, and jsconfig.json‘s exclude operate on different scopes. Align the setting with the symptom instead of copying the same pattern into every file automatically.

Excluding source code or required generated declarations

Excluding a needed source directory can remove files from discovery; excluding declarations or generated modules that your project consumes can make IntelliSense appear broken. Start with clearly irrelevant dependencies, caches, and build output, then verify navigation and completion.

Expecting a documented percentage improvement

The cited VS Code documentation provides qualitative guidance, not a universal benchmark. Laptop hardware, workspace size, operating system, project configuration, and extension set all change the result. Measure the action that bothers you and keep the setting only if it improves that action without an unacceptable trade-off.

What to expect after the changes

Targeted exclusions can reduce the amount of project-file discovery, search, or language-service analysis VS Code performs in a large workspace. They cannot establish that every slow laptop will become fast, and they do not diagnose hardware, operating-system, or extension problems by themselves. If the editor remains slow after the relevant scope has been reduced and extension behavior has been checked, the available documentation does not support blaming one particular setting or component without further evidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I change user settings or workspace settings?

Use user settings for preferences that belong in every project. Put repository-specific exclusions in workspace settings so they affect only that project; where both scopes are supported, the workspace value overrides the user value.

Will files.exclude fix every kind of VS Code slowdown?

No. The official FAQ connects it specifically with the search for typical project files while opening folders containing many files. It is not documented as a universal fix for indexing, search, language services, or extensions.

What should I exclude when JavaScript or TypeScript IntelliSense is slow?

In the project’s jsconfig.json, exclude directories that are not source code. The official example names node_modules and generated dist output. Adapt the paths and keep any source or generated declarations that the project intentionally consumes.

What is the difference between search.exclude and files.exclude?

search.exclude narrows text-search results while keeping the directory available in the Explorer. files.exclude is relevant to project-file discovery during folder opening and can also hide paths from normal file views. Neither setting replaces jsconfig.json project exclusions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can disabling the minimap speed up my laptop?

VS Code documents editor.minimap.enabled as a display choice. It removes the minimap, but the documentation provides no benchmark or guarantee that it improves CPU use, memory use, or IntelliSense responsiveness.

How can I tell whether an extension is responsible?

Repeat the same slow action with extensions disabled and compare it with the normal workspace. If the delay disappears, re-enable extensions selectively and inspect the suspected extension’s settings and activation behavior. If it remains, investigate the relevant folder, search, or language-service scope.

The Bottom Line

Match the setting to the symptom: use a narrow workspace files.exclude rule for documented folder-opening and project-file discovery delays, jsconfig.json exclusions for JavaScript or TypeScript IntelliSense, and search.exclude for oversized text searches. Investigate extensions separately, and treat the minimap as a visual preference rather than a proven performance fix.
