Valheim 1.0 mods are unofficial, and compatibility depends on the game build, mod loader, dependencies, and sometimes whether you play on a server. Iron Gate says it cannot guarantee mods will work with 1.0, and the game has no Steam Workshop. Treat any recommendation as a starting point: check the mod author’s current requirements, then test it in a separate profile or backed-up world before relying on it.
What changed with Valheim 1.0—and why old mod advice may not apply
Valheim 1.0 launched on September 9, 2026. Iron Gate’s launch notes list the Deep North, 40+ new weapons, 4 new armor sets, and 80+ new buildable pieces. These are the studio’s figures from its launch announcement, not independent counts. Such a substantial update can make mods built for earlier game versions incompatible or unnecessary.
Iron Gate’s Valheim 1.0 FAQ states: “Since we don’t have any official mod support, we cannot guarantee that any mods will be functional when 1.0 releases.” It also says there will be no Steam Workshop for 1.0. Mods and compatibility claims therefore come from their community authors; a package appearing in a catalog is not proof that it works with your build.
Which mod manager should you use?
For most players, choose a manager based on where you get mods and how much control you want. PC Gamer’s guide, updated September 28, 2026, covers Gale and r2modman. It describes Gale as supporting Thunderstore and Hexium downloads, while r2modman is a straightforward choice oriented around Thunderstore.

Thunderstore is a catalog, not a compatibility guarantee. Its Valheim catalog displayed 4,720 results when checked on October 7, 2026; that live count changes and says nothing about quality or 1.0 support. Browse its Valheim packages by category, but confirm the individual package details before installing.
Which Valheim 1.0 mods are worth considering?
Rather than call an untested collection “the best,” use the examples below as a shortlist based on documented purpose and 1.0 information. The authors’ statements are not independent compatibility tests.

SmartContainers: inventory quality of life
The SmartContainers Valheim 1.0 fork page explicitly lists Valheim 1.0 (Unity 6) and requires BepInExPack Valheim 5.4.2350 or newer. The page identifies it as client-side. Its author advises testing with a backup world first if using heavy inventory routing in multiplayer. That combination of an explicit game-version statement and a clearly stated caution makes it a concrete candidate for players seeking inventory-management changes, but it is still an author claim rather than a verified result.
Other catalog choices: filter by what you want to change
Thunderstore’s Valheim catalog includes categories such as Deep North Update, Tools, Utility, Building, and Crafting. These can help narrow a search, but category placement does not establish current support. Before choosing a building, crafting, or gameplay mod, confirm the author names Valheim 1.0 support and explains any dependencies or multiplayer requirements.

How to check whether a mod works with your setup
- Check the game version. Read the mod’s current description and update notes. Look for an explicit Valheim 1.0 or 1.0.x statement rather than assuming a recent upload is compatible.
- Confirm its loader and dependencies. PC Gamer’s guide says most Valheim mods require BepInEx, while many also require Jotunn. Follow the specific mod’s listed requirements; do not assume every mod needs both.
- Check where it must be installed. Determine whether the mod is client-side, server-side, or required on both. SmartContainers’ 1.0 fork, for example, identifies itself as client-side; that statement applies to that mod, not all mods.
- Install the loader first, then add one mod at a time. PC Gamer recommends resolving loader basics before adding other mods. Launch the game after each addition so a failure is easier to trace.
- Use a separate profile or back up the world. Keep an unmodded setup available, and test changes away from a valued save. This is especially important where a mod affects inventory or multiplayer behavior.
- Recheck after game or mod updates. An earlier successful launch does not establish compatibility with a later game build. Review the author’s latest notes before updating the game or package.
When is a compatibility bridge appropriate?
The community package Valheim10Compatibility describes itself as a bridge for Valheim 1.0.x. Its author says it was built against 1.0.7 and verified through 1.0.12, and recommends BepInExPack Valheim 5.4.2350 or newer. The author also advises removing the bridge once the original mod has a proper 1.0 build.
This is a community workaround, not official Iron Gate guidance and not a universal fix. Use it only when the package’s instructions match the mod you are trying to run; a bridge cannot make every older mod compatible.

What to do if a mod fails or a save behaves unexpectedly
- The game fails to launch: Start with the loader and its dependencies, then disable recently added mods. Reintroduce them one at a time to identify the conflict.
- A mod does not load: Compare its stated game version, loader version, and dependencies with your installed setup. Check the author’s update notes for known limitations.
- Multiplayer behavior differs: Verify whether the mod belongs on the client, server, or both, and make sure the people or server involved follow the author’s instructions.
- A world or inventory is affected: Stop testing on the primary save. Restore a backup if needed, and consult the mod author’s instructions before removing a mod that has changed saved data.
Bottom line: choose documented support, not popularity
For Valheim 1.0, start with mods that explicitly name the current game version, state their loader and dependency requirements, and explain client/server behavior. SmartContainers’ 1.0 fork is one documented quality-of-life candidate; Gale and r2modman are manager options described in PC Gamer’s guide. None of those facts guarantees a trouble-free setup. Install incrementally, keep a backup, and treat community compatibility claims as provisional.
