For more useful Tapo doorbell alerts, choose only the detection events you care about, narrow eligible motion detection to the relevant part of the view, and make sure push notifications are enabled. For privacy, set Privacy Zones to mask parts of the image. These controls do different jobs, and the available options vary by model.
Where to find Tapo doorbell alert settings
In the Tapo app, select your doorbell, open its device settings, then go to Detection. Tapo’s general guidance places detection types, zones, sensitivity, notifications, and supported alarms in this area, but not every model offers the same controls. Check your model’s app screens or guide when an option described here is missing.
Which settings should you change first?
- Choose relevant event types. Turn on only the categories you want alerts about. For example, Tapo lists motion, person, pet, vehicle, and package detection for the D225; that list should not be assumed to apply to every Tapo doorbell. Tapo D225 product page.
- Limit the detection area if your model supports zones. Keep the useful doorstep area in view and exclude irrelevant areas, such as a busy sidewalk. On the D225, Activity Zones apply only to motion detection, so do not assume they filter other AI event categories.
- Enable push notifications separately. Detection determines what the device detects; notification settings determine whether the app sends phone alerts. Check both if an event is detected but no alert reaches your phone.
- Adjust sensitivity only to solve a specific problem. If relevant movement is missed, check the doorbell’s position and its model-supported sensitivity controls before simply setting sensitivity to maximum.
For false or unwanted alerts, start with the smallest change: remove irrelevant event categories, then narrow eligible motion detection if zones are available. Recheck notifications only if alerts still are not arriving on your phone.
Activity zones and Privacy Zones are not the same
Activity or detection zones define where supported detection applies. Privacy Zones mask parts of the camera image so those areas cannot be viewed or monitored. A privacy mask is not an alert filter, and a detection zone does not provide the same image-masking function.

Set a Privacy Zone
- In the Tapo app, open the doorbell’s Device Settings > Video & Display > Privacy Zones.
- Enable the feature, draw the area to mask, and save the zone.
- Check the mask again if you reposition or rotate the doorbell. Privacy Zones follow the camera view, so a change in angle can leave the intended real-world area uncovered.

Battery doorbells: balance wake-up reach and battery use
Some battery models provide a separate wake-up sensitivity setting. Tapo says: “Higher sensitivity results in longer detection distance, easier wake-up, and more recordings, which will reduce battery life.” The statement is from Tapo’s FAQ, “What is the Wake-up Sensitivity of my battery camera/doorbell?”; the result lists an update of 2026-09-29. Increase wake-up sensitivity if the current setup misses relevant movement and you need greater detection reach. If battery life matters more or the device wakes too often, reduce it and refine placement. Activity and Privacy Zones do not reduce PIR sensor wake-ups, so masking or narrowing a zone should not be expected to solve excess battery wake-ups.
Alerts and recordings are separate choices
Storage is not a prerequisite for configuring detection or receiving push alerts. Tapo says recorded clips may be uploaded to the cloud with an active Tapo Care subscription or saved locally to a Tapo Hub or microSD card when local recording is enabled. Options and requirements depend on the model.

For the D225 specifically, Tapo lists a separately purchased microSD card up to 512 GB or Tapo Care cloud storage by subscription. Confirm compatibility and card requirements for your doorbell before buying a card. Storage affects where recordings are kept; it does not improve detection or enable push alerts.
