For classic-film depth and curation, Criterion Channel is the strongest-supported choice. Its rotating catalog pairs films from Criterion, Janus Films, and other licensors with exclusive programming and supplementary features. That does not make it an automatic winner for “studio-backed originals”: licensed studio classics and originals made for a streaming service are different things, and the available evidence does not establish a service-wide winner for both priorities.
Best for classic movies: Criterion Channel
Criterion Channel is a dedicated film service built around a rotating selection of classic and contemporary movies from Hollywood and around the world. Its official FAQ describes programming drawn from Criterion and Janus Films, as well as studio and independent licensors, plus original programming exclusive to the service. The mix of curated collections and supplementary features makes it a more directly focused option for film-first viewers than a general streaming catalog. Criterion’s FAQ says the service currently streams more than 3,000 films and exclusive content, and reports more than 500 shorts and 5,000 supplementary features. Those are Criterion-published figures, not independently audited counts.
The Channel’s U.S. subscription is listed at $10.99 USD per month or $99.99 USD per year, with a seven-day trial. Criterion says it is available only in the United States and Canada. Prices, trial terms, and availability can change, so confirm them on the official FAQ before subscribing.
Check the specific film before you subscribe
A Criterion Collection release is not necessarily available to stream on Criterion Channel. The service says its catalog rotates, and explicitly notes that not every Collection title is included. Search for the film itself on the Channel before choosing a plan. If it is unavailable, Criterion also publishes DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K Ultra HD editions, although format and availability depend on the individual release. Criterion’s shop is the place to verify a particular edition.

What “studio-backed originals” means—and what it does not
The phrase can describe two different things: a film licensed from a studio, or an original made for a streaming service that is owned by or associated with a studio. A classic studio film in a service’s catalog is not, by that fact alone, a streaming original. Compare the classic-film selection and the original slate separately rather than treating them as one measure of quality.
Max is worth checking if you want classic studio films within a broader streaming service. Warner Bros. Discovery announced an expansion of the TCM hub in the United States during 2025, adding classic films and curation. The announcement is a useful pointer, but it does not establish today’s Max catalog size, current plan prices, or a current slate of originals relevant to this specific request. Check Max’s current listings for the films and originals you care about; the available information does not support declaring it the best overall choice for both priorities. Warner Bros. Discovery’s announcement.

How Netflix compares
Netflix offers a broad service with a U.S. “Classic Movies” category that includes titles such as Psycho, The Guns of Navarone, and Lawrence of Arabia: Restored Version. This confirms that Netflix surfaces older films, but a category page does not demonstrate the depth or sustained curation of a specialist catalog. Its available films can change, so check the Netflix U.S. Classic Movies page for the current selection.

These are volatile prices, not a guarantee of current or region-wide pricing; verify the plan and terms on Netflix before signing up.

| Your priority | Best place to start | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Classic-film curation and film-focused extras | Criterion Channel | Whether your target film is currently streaming, plus current price and territory. |
| Classic studio films within a broader service | Max, including its TCM hub | Current hub selection, plan terms, and the specific films you want. |
| A general streaming service that also lists some classics | Netflix | Whether its current U.S. or regional category includes your target film. |
| Streaming originals made for a studio-associated service | Compare the current original slates separately | Whether “original” means exclusive to that service, and whether the title fits your interests. |
If classics are the deciding factor, start with Criterion Channel and check its catalog title by title. If you also require a particular studio’s streaming originals, compare those specific titles and current plans separately; the available information does not establish one service that leads on both measures.
