For comfortable office work, first reduce glare and harsh lighting, then adjust brightness and contrast until the display is easy to read in your normal room lighting. Enlarge text if you find yourself squinting or leaning forward, and set the monitor at a comfortable distance and height. There is no single brightness percentage, contrast value, or color-temperature setting that suits every monitor and workspace.
1. Reduce glare before changing display settings
Look at the screen from your usual working position. If you see a window, ceiling light, or lamp reflected in it, change the monitor’s position or the light source first. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidance on workstation lighting recommends placing the screen at right angles to windows and light sources where practical. Blinds or drapes, indirect or shielded lighting, and moving the workstation can also help. Keep the screen clean, since dust can add to glare.
If repositioning and lighting changes do not solve the problem, a monitor glare filter is another option. Choose one that does not significantly reduce screen visibility.

Once reflections and room lighting are under control, adjust brightness and contrast while viewing the screen in the lighting you normally use. Aim for comfortable, clear text and images—not a particular percentage or contrast ratio. OSHA’s workstation evaluation checklist asks whether “Monitor brightness and contrast is adjusted for comfort.” The cited guidance does not set universal numeric values for either control.

- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
If your monitor has a color-temperature or blue-light setting, treat it as a personal comfort preference rather than a required eye-protection setting. The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) says the small amount of blue light from computer screens has not been shown to harm eyes; it associates common screen discomfort more with device misuse or overuse.
3. Make text readable without leaning closer
If reading makes you squint, lean toward the screen, or bring a laptop unusually close, increase the text size or display scaling and reassess your posture. CDC/NIOSH specifically recommends enlarging font size to avoid those habits in its 2020 guidance on working from home. The aim is to read comfortably while keeping your head and neck in a neutral position.

4. Set monitor height, distance, and angle together
OSHA gives a general preferred eye-to-screen distance of 20 to 40 inches (50 to 100 cm). Position the monitor directly in front of you, with its top at or slightly below eye level. OSHA describes a normal center-screen viewing angle of 15 to 20 degrees below horizontal eye level; the screen should generally remain perpendicular to your line of sight, often with no more than 10 to 20 degrees of tilt. See its monitor positioning guidance.

These are ergonomic guides, not rigid rules for every person or display. Adjust for readability, posture, screen size, and vision needs; people who use bifocals may need a lower monitor. OSHA’s evaluation checklist also uses about 18 to 20 inches or arm’s length as a prompt, so use the distance at which you can read comfortably without leaning or straining. If the existing stand cannot provide a comfortable height or angle, a riser or adjustable stand may help.

5. Take breaks from close-up work
Settings cannot replace breaks. CDC/NIOSH suggests the 20/20/20 practice: every 20 minutes, look at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds. OSHA also recommends periodically looking at a distant object, blinking, and alternating computer work with other duties.
The same 2020 CDC/NIOSH bulletin reports that adding five-minute breaks each hour to conventional breaks taken twice daily reduced overall musculoskeletal discomfort and eyestrain in the cited research. That result describes the reported arrangement, not a guaranteed effect for every worker.

When settings are not enough
Changing monitor settings can improve viewing comfort, but it does not establish the cause of persistent or severe symptoms. If discomfort continues or you need individualized vision advice, consult an appropriate health professional rather than relying on a display adjustment alone.
