Some Android phones can automatically record calls from unknown numbers or selected contacts through Google’s Phone app. iPhones support call recording in some regions, but Apple’s documented steps start recording manually during a call. Neither feature is guaranteed by the phone model alone: country or region, carrier, operating system, app version, and local availability can affect whether it works.
Which phones can record calls automatically?
For automatic recording, Google’s Phone app is the documented option in supported markets. It can record calls from unknown numbers or from contacts you select. Google requires the latest Phone app and says only certain devices and carriers support the feature.
Google lists these minimum requirements in its Phone app Help:
- Pixel: Pixel 6 or newer, running Android 14 or newer.
- Other Android phones: Android 9 or newer.
These are eligibility thresholds, not a guarantee that recording is enabled for your specific phone, carrier, or country. Check Google’s Phone app call-recording requirements and instructions before buying or relying on a device.

Can an iPhone record calls automatically?
Apple documents call recording on iPhone in some countries and regions, but its instructions describe starting a recording during a call—not setting up automatic recording for unknown numbers or selected contacts. In the Phone app, make a call, tap More, then tap Call Recording. Both participants hear an audio notice. When the recording is stopped or the call ends, it is saved in the Call Recordings folder in Notes.
Apple lists call recording as unavailable in Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Egypt, the European Union, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. Availability can change, so check Apple’s current iPhone call recording and transcription instructions for your region. Apple’s instructions do not establish a minimum iPhone model for recording audio; do not assume a particular model will enable a feature that is unavailable where you use it.

What to check before choosing or relying on a phone
Confirm the details that determine whether the feature will work in your situation:
- Country or region: Apple and Google both restrict availability by market. Google notes that support varies by country or region.
- Phone and software: For Google Phone, compare your device and Android version with Google’s minimum requirements.
- Carrier and app version: Google says only certain devices and carriers support recording and requires the latest Phone app.
- Recording mode: Google documents automatic rules for unknown numbers or selected contacts. Apple’s documented process starts recording during a call.
- Notice and consent: Both platforms announce that recording is starting. Legal requirements depend on the applicable jurisdiction.
- Storage and follow-up features: Apple saves recordings in Notes. Google provides playback, sharing to supported apps, and retention controls; automatic recording and deletion are not available in every market. Transcription is separately limited by language and region.
Recording notices, consent, and transcripts
Google Phone notifies participants before recording begins. Google Phone app Help cautions: “Some laws require all people on the call to consent to being recorded.” Check the rules that apply where the participants are located; a notification from the phone does not itself establish that recording complies with local law.

Apple also says both call participants hear an audio notice. In select regions and languages, Notes may provide a transcript. Apple advises checking transcript accuracy before relying on it. Transcription and Apple Intelligence summaries have separate language, region, and device constraints, so their availability should not be treated as a condition for recording audio.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to verify support on your own phone
- Identify your market and carrier. Check the relevant Apple or Google support page for country or region availability, and confirm with your carrier if support remains unclear.
- Check the phone and operating system. For Google Phone, confirm the device and Android version meet Google’s published minimums.
- Update the Phone app. Google requires the latest version of its Phone app for its recording feature.
- Look for the recording controls. On iPhone, Apple’s documented control appears during a call under More > Call Recording. For Google Phone, use Google’s current instructions to check whether automatic recording options are available for unknown numbers or selected contacts.
- Check what happens to recordings. Confirm where they are saved and, for Google Phone, review available retention and deletion settings before depending on them.
If a control is missing, that alone does not identify the cause: market, carrier, device, software version, and app availability can all matter. Verify each applicable requirement rather than assuming that a phone advertised as supporting call recording will provide automatic recording in your location.
